7.1 CLASSIFICATION OF METHODS K Exploitation
in which mining of ore, coal, or stone is carried out
at the surface with essentially no exposure of
miners underground is referred to as surface
mining. Although occasional openings may be
placed below the surface and limited underground
development is occasionally required, this type of
mining is essentially surface-based. In Table 4.1,
the surface mining methods were divided into two
classes. In this chapter, we turn our attention to
the mechanical extraction methods. The four
methods in this class are as follows:
I. Open pit mining
2. Quarrying
3. Open cast (strip) mining
4. Auger or highwall mining
These methods are responsible for more than 90
% of the surface mine production in the United
States and the bulk of the nation's total tonnage
of coal, ore, and stone. Two of these methods-
open pit and open cast mining rank as the most
important surface methods and are among the
eight most important of all the methods The
terminology of surface mining applied to the
mining of stone should be clarified at this point.
The term quarry is used in the mineral industry
and the general literature to mean a mine that
produces stone or aggregate. The stone industry
even uses the term to describe an underground
operation that mines stone. However, this term
does not describe a mining method, only the
product mined.
