History of Hermosillo
The city of Hermosillo or “City of the Sun” founded in the year 1700 is the capital of the
state of Sonora. Around the time of it´s foundation in consisted of 3 small towns , Nuestra
Señora del Pópulo, Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles y la Santísima Trinidad del Pitic
which were inhabited by the Seris , Tepocas and Pimas. Because of the many fights
between the tribes the Spaniards wanted to contain them to make the colonization easier,
so the town of Real presidio de San Pedro de la Conquista was founded by Juan Bautista
Escalante, this caused many struggles with the Seris which resulted in many members of
the tribe murdered and the creation of the Pitic Precint. Later on the name was changed
consecutively to Villa del Pitic and once again but with the category of city to how we
know it now as Hermosillo. Because of this the political powers which resided in Arizpe
moved to Hermosillo. Once the main train track which joined Guaymas, Hermosillo and
Nogales was finished it allowed commerce, trading , mines and agriculture to grow which
allowed the city to become an important place for social and economic development.
Later on Abelardo L. Rodriguez a military and politician man who was president of the
country and governor of the state , allowed with his help ,the city to exponentially grow.
As Sonora governor he was known for his futuristic and energetic vision which is why he
is considered as the starter of the modernization of the state , he played and inmportant
part in the construction of infrastructure for the state which allowed its economic
development. During his run many dams and drainage systems were built and also
buildings such as the State Government Palace and the Bank of Mexico.
