Macron and the Revival of Europe
It’s not just that Emmanuel Macron won and
will become, at the age of 39, France’s
youngest president. It’s not merely that he
defeated, in Marine Le Pen, the forces of
xenophobic nationalism exploited by
President Donald Trump. It’s that he won with
a bold stand for the much-maligned European
Union, and so reaffirmed the European idea
and Europe’s place in a world that needs its
strength and values.
This, after Britain’s dismal decision last year
to leave the European Union, and in the face
of Trump’s woeful anti-European ignorance,
was critical. Macron underlined his message
by coming out to address his supporters in
Paris accompanied by the European anthem,
Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy,” rather than the
Marseillaise — a powerful gesture of
openness.
A federalizing Europe is the foundation of
European postwar stability and prosperity. It
offers the best chance for young Europeans to
fulfill their promise. It is Europeans’ “common
destiny,” as Macron put it in his acceptance
speech, standing before the French and
European Union flags. To think otherwise is to
forget history. No wonder Chancellor Angela
Merkel of Germany, through her spokesman,
immediately proclaimed a victory “for a
strong and united Europe.”
That will require reform. Europe, complacent,
has lost traction. Macron recognized this. He
declared, “I want to re-weave the bond
between citizens and Europe.” More
transparency, more accountability and more
creativity are required. No miracle ever
marketed itself more miserably than the
European Union.

mensaje al salir a hablar en París ante sus
partidarios acompañado por el himno
europeo, la Oda a la Alegría de Beethoven, en
lugar de usar la Marsellesa; un poderoso
gesto de apertura.
La Europa federal es la base de la estabilidad y
prosperidad europea de la postguerra. Ofrece
la mejor oportunidad para que los jóvenes
europeos cumplan su promesa. Es el “destino
común” de los europeos, como dijo Macron
durante su discurso de aceptación, parado
frente a las banderas francesa y de la UE.
Pensar lo contrario es olvidarse de la historia.

chief executive of Instagram, showed off one
of his favorite charts: Days to Reach the Next
100 Million Users.

Not long ago, the Facebook-owned photo-
based social network grew at a steady clip.
Every nine months, without fail, Instagram
added another 100 million users somewhere
in the world. Then, last year, it began racking
up more new users every day. It grew to 600
million users from 500 million in only six
months.
On Wednesday, just four months after
reaching that milestone, the company
announced it had reached another: About 700
million people now use Instagram every
month, with about 400 million of them
checking in daily.
I had come to visit Mr. Systrom because I’m
one of the new 100 million. I technically
joined Instagram years ago but used it only
occasionally.
In the past few months, however, I began
diving in more often, and now I check it
several times a day. As I used Instagram more,
I realized something about the photo-sharing
app: It’s becoming Facebook’s next Facebook.
