Abstract
The Prologue of the Gospel of John (Jn 1, 1-18) is the biblical text which
works as the building axis in the Apostolic Exhortation Verbum Domini. In
fact, each section of the three which constitute the Exhortation carries a verse
from the Prologue as an epigraph. Having in mind the famous expression
taken from the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the Prologue text is
“principle and foundation” of this pontifical document, that is to say, it is the
key needed to read and capture the richness and message of the Exhortation.
The magisterial document follows the ecclesiastical dynamics applied to think
on divine revelation, a genuine reflection which got its peak in the Dogmatic
Constitution Dei Verbum. The Exhortation taps into this Constitution and the
Constitution gives the Exhortation depth and richness.

of this verse is that we are given only a freedom of choice, a privilege we may see fit to
make use of. To read free will (liberum arbitrium) from this word, as they do, is like
extracting fire out of water. At first sight there is some excuse for it, for the evangelist does
not say the Christ makes them children of God but gives them the right to become so.
[…] the evangelist declares that this right is given to those who already believe, and it is
certain that they are indeed already children of God. Those who say that by believing, a
person becomes nothing more than a son of God if he chooses to, greatly underestimate
the value of faith. They replace a present result by an uncertain possibility”.
