Giorgio Agamben

Its good that the mind assigns a limit (I suppose). And its good
(when we cross beyond that limit) to know where Im going (I
suppose). A site without place exhibits only an abyss. Let yourself.
But to touch with fear. To let oneself fall. To let oneself enter.
To let oneself not knowing, in the bed: Let yourself say.

104
In the morning I
read words from the street to locate what crosses us, a fly, an ink,
a country your permanent marker could be hate. I could be hate,
is a form of advancing through planks, of remembering without
belonging to your personal sky. It is necessary to locate hate in
beds, in hot hospitals, in museums of the book, in exploded
houses. you held me under siege

No soy una paloma. No soy

This morning no one can be a flower. This morning each one is a desk.

Translation is a form of dictation. You speak (in your writing). I listen (by
reading). I listen further (by re-reading). And further (by writing which is rewriting). I speak (in writing which is a re-writing of what I read when I listen
to your writing). You (writer of the original) tell me (writer of the translation)
what to write.
176
177
The translator talks back to the dictation. The title of Dolores and Rodrigos
book is Intervenir, a verb in infinitive: to intervene. The title of my translation
is Intervene, a verb conjugated. A first person? A second person? Plural?
Singular? An imperative?
Economy of language is central in this work, though the work has many
centers and no centerit migrates, it falters, it refuses to be held, it resists.
Part of the work of this translation was a practice of hewing, as in cutting
to a congruently concise economy; part of the work of this translation was
a practice of hewing, as in cleaving to the language channels this writing
cuts into the terrain it traverses. A practice of conforming to the dictates of
someone elses economy. A practice of necessity. A practice of pain.

The world is an open channel; we are an open channel. The world is a floodgate gaping. An aperture pried open. The world rushes past, in, through, and
we have no valve. The world demands collaboration. We collaborate simply by
being? All collaboration is collusion?

Our context: A homeland on its knees. Our context: A country with its back

No podemos todava recordar.

Intervenir ends with an intervention: Jos Marts poem La nia de Guatemala intervenes in Dolores and Rodrigos book, invoking both a history of
explosive revolutionary struggles for independence and the hauntological
presence of a young woman dead before her time, a prismatic reference to all
the Guatemalan women (and men) murdered at the hands of the state. Both
are apt invocations for present-day Mexico. Dolores and Rodrigo intervene
in Marts poem, rewriting it from the inside, becoming the gravedigger who
both buries and unburies the dead. La nia de Guatemala was written about
a particular person, Mara Garca Granados, daughter of a former president
of Guatemala who died very young of a broken heart, or so the poem recounts.
She became emblematic of her country, her life and death mythologized by
Marts poem. The contrast is stark: how many die now, every day, emblematic
of nothing but the irremediably fatal condition of living, disappeared rather
than mythologized, their names and narratives unknown?
We may never know if these bodies are living or dead. Perhaps they are both?
These bodies are our bodies. This territory is our history. The body, with my
participation. We participate in the body the way we participate in homeland/territory/independence/love. We are exposed to an officially manufactured death that marks the bodies in which we participate, makes those bodies. We are the intervened, or we are the interveners. Or we are both?

What I want

There is no approach that can possibly dismantle the occupied racist police
state, to borrow a phrase from Daniel Borzutzky, in which our writing takes
place on both sides of the border. And yet there is no approach other than
the dismantling of that state. The unspeaking of that state. An articulation of
attention to the bodies that go unspoken in that state, that are left speechless,
lifeless.
