ABSTRACT
Sexual fantasies have been generally described as sexual thoughts with erotic content which are experienced as
pleasant. However, the term sexual cognitions is a broader term than sexual fantasies, which distinguishes between
positive and negative sexual cognitions. In this work, we review the different lines derived from research about both
sexual fantasies and sexual cognitions although research about the latter is scarce-. We address the following aspects:
1) the assessment of their frequency and content, 2) the factors that are associated with their production, 3) the
similarities and differences between men and women, 4) the role they play on sexual functioning, through their
relationship with desire, excitation and sexual satisfaction, 5) their presence in individuals who have perpetrated sexual
aggression and 6) in individuals who have been victims of sexual abuse. Finally, we will describe the limitations of
previous research and we will propose some aspects that should be of interest for further research.

instrumento
ofrece
un
enfoque
multidimensional de las fantasas sexuales al
distinguir entre cuatro tipos segn su
contenido:
ntimas,
exploratorias,
sadomasoquistas e impersonales. Las
promiscuidad;
las
fantasas
sadomasoquistas estn asociadas con el
sometimiento o provocacin de dolor durante
la excitacin sexual e incluyen tanto
conductas dominantes como sumisas.
Finalmente, las fantasas impersonales son
las relacionadas con el inters por fetiches,
ropa, pelculas u otras manifestaciones
sexuales indirectas, dando escaso valor a los
sentimientos. La mayora de estudios que
evalan las fantasas sexuales con
posterioridad hacen uso de este instrumento,
tanto en poblacin general (Santos-Iglesias,
Calvillo, & Sierra, 2013; Sierra, et. al., 2006)
como en individuos con algn tipo de
parafilia (Baumgartner, Scalora, & Huss,
2002). Sin embargo, ciertos estudios han
demostrado la debilidad en algunos de sus
tems y de su estructura factorial tanto en
muestras anglosajonas (Baumgartner, et. al.,
2002; O'Donohue, Letourneau, & Dowling,
1997) como espaolas (Sierra, Ortega,
Martn-Ortiz, & Vera-Villaroel, 2004).
