To see a World in a
Nada ms.
Nada ms y nada menos.
And now we find again the drawings of CAMPO BAEZA at the COAM
Foundation (the Foundation of the Official College of Architects of Madrid), on
this quiet street Piamonte in Madrid, as if in ocultis. Only drawings, all
drawings, nothing but drawings. And to top it all, they tell me the architect has
asked that, instead of a catalogue, they sell a DVD with all his drawings on it, or
better yet, give it away, because its so inexpensive. Because he argues, in this
new millennium, this is the best way to reach new generations.
CAMPO BAEZA entitles the text accompanying his exhibition with a meaningful
THINKING WITH YOUR HANDS, which is also the title of the show. It is the
same title that he used for the text published alongside the drawings for THE
ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW piece. In Spanish its PENSAR CON LAS
MANOS, but the English, THINKING WITH YOUR HANDS sounds all the more
definitive, convincing. The text is very clear. And as he says, how can an
architect not draw? Well, the way things are lately You may notice that
many of the architects who make up todays so-called star system, Pritzker
laureates included, do not have time to draw. They dont know how to convey
their ideas, give information about what they make through drawings. Is it that
they dont have time to think?
CAMPO BAEZA is on the other shore to use the same image that he
employed to talk about Alejandro de la Sota, one of his teachers. Outside of the
star system, despite being one of the best-known Spanish architects
internationally. He makes a profound architecture, the product of thought.
BUILT IDEAS, as he likes to call them, ideas that are captured in the drawings
we see on display here now. THINKING WITH YOUR HANDS? Better,
BUILDING WITH YOUR HEAD.
N.B.
This exhibition, by Campo Baezas express wish is made with the greatest
economy of means. No special architecturally designed display has been
proposed.
Instead, a simple white sheet and a DVD.
The projector inside of the hall will cast images that, projected on the white cloth
over the window, will allow the drawings to be seen from the street on that white
surface continuously. In the background, the sound of the viola da gamba by
Marin Marais. And visitors may take a copy of the DVD. And when Campo
Baeza is there, he will make them an original drawing on the paper envelope.
Thats all.
No more, and no less.
