estamos hablando.
A veces usamos adjetivos o frases preposicionales para
identificar algo o a alguien: the new girl the girl with blond hair
Pero cuando necesitamos una explicacin ms extensa,
podemos usar una oracin de relativo: the girl who lived in the upstairs flat

Tambin se omite cuando es el OBJETO de una preposicin:

Whose
Whose es el pronombre relativo POSESIVO (se traduce como
cuyo, -a, -os, -as): The girl whose photo was in the paper lives in our street. q (Her photo / The girls photo was in the paper)
Normalmente se usa whose con personas, aunque a veces va
con otro tipo de sustantivos: The European country whose economy is growing... The building whose windows were all broken...

Non-defining relative clauses: Mrs Deborah Clark, who faced the gunman, was shot in the leg. This famous picture (which was painted in 1960) is worth thousands of euros.
Las oraciones explicativas
identifican a quin o a qu nos referimos. La informacin que dan es necesaria; sin sta, la oracin principal estara incompleta. La mayora de las oraciones de relativo son especificativas.
aaden informacin adicional a algo o alguien ya identificado. Esta informacin adicional no es necesaria. Su uso se limita al lenguaje formal y escrito.

se usa who para personas, which para cosas, o that para ambos: I know the person who/that served us. Towns that/which attract tourists are very expensive.
usa who para personas y which para cosas, pero nunca that: Andrew, who served us, is the owner of the restaurant. Stratford (which attracts many tourists) is the town where Shakespeare was born.

cuando funciona de objeto: The man (who) we saw yesterday is my neighbour. Have you seen the book (that) I was reading?
Si el pronombre relativo es el
puede omitir en ningn caso. En lenguaje formal el pronombre objeto para personas es whom: Mike Portnoy, whom we saw yesterday, is my neighbour.
Si hay preposicin, sta puede
objeto de una preposicin, sta va al final: Whats the name of the man (who) you work for?
ir delante del pronombre o al final: Mr Fix, for whom I work, is a strange man. Mr Fix, who I work for, is a strange man.
