SCOPE
This specification deals with deep foundations design, such as driven piles, cored and cast-situ piles,
diaphragm walls, wells, etc. involved in the construction of onshore structures or structures comparable to
onshore structures.
Offshore structures are excluded.

APPLICATION
REFERENCE DOCUMENTS
The reference documents listed below form an integral part of this General Specification. Unless otherwise
stipulated, the applicable version of these documents, including relevant appendices and supplements, is
the latest revision published at the EFFECTIVE DATE of the CONTRACT.
When local national standards, regulations and codes exist, all design, engineering, materials and
construction shall conform to their latest requirements, which complete or modify the present
specifications.
In case of lack of obligatory local national standards, international norms and standards will be applied.
In case of lack of international norms and standards, national norms and standards listed hereafter will be
applied.
In all cases the system adopted shall be coherent, i.e. the various texts shall present no incompatibility.
Any dispute shall be resolved by basing works on the most stringent text for the CONTRACTOR and at his
expense.
The list of specifications and norms quoted is not exhaustive: the CONTRACTOR shall respect the
secondary standards and regulations, which cover the works described in the present specification.
Certain specifications and norms may be indicated with an issue date. This is for information only and on
the understanding that the most recent issue shall be used.

Test method for piles under static axial compressive load

GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS
4.1.
Origin and Quality of Materials
Particular specification shall specify the characteristics and the quality of materials to be used, in case
COMPANY general specifications need to be supplemented or modified.
Using several kinds of cement for a pile is strictly prohibited.
4.2.
Geo-technical Survey
A preliminary geo-technical survey, initiated by the COMPANY, shall serve as a basis for the choice of type
foundation. All the reports concluding this survey shall be delivered to the Engineering CONTRACTOR.
4.3.
Ultimate Foundation Capacity
The foundation capacity shall be estimated from the data presented in the geo-technical report. The
Engineering CONTRACTOR shall provide to the COMPANY a description of the methods used to evaluate
the axial and lateral ultimate foundation capacity.
5.
PARTICULAR CONDITIONS
5.1.
Layout Tolerances
Reference shall be made to the requirements of codes in force. In case of a slab founded on piles, the
minimum distance between the axis of a pile and the edge of the slab shall be at least 1.5 times the largest
cross-sectional dimension of the pile.
5.2.
Quality Control
5.2.1.
Materials Quality Control
Reference shall be made to the requirements of codes in force and to the COMPANY general
specifications (i.e. ESP-CIV-300 for reinforced concrete).
5.2.2.
Control During Construction
The Construction CONTRACTOR shall supply:
5.2.2.1.
For pile driving
Driving curves which shall indicate the hammer weight, the drop height, the rate of penetration, the driving
events, etc. This shall be made for each pile.
5.2.2.2.
For pile jetting
Penetration curves, indicating static force and penetration rate for each pile.
5.2.2.3.
For pile jetting by vibration
Penetration curves indicating the weight and frequency of vibrators and the penetration rate for each pile.
Pg. 4 de 5
5.2.4.1.
General
The COMPANY may request test piles and loading tests on piles. Loads to be applied to these piles shall
be of same nature than working loads (axial compression or traction, horizontal load, etc.).
Particular specifications shall specify this point.
5.2.4.2.
Test Piles
About two months before the works start, the COMPANY may request that one or several representative
test piles are performed in order to appreciate the capacity of the CONTRACTOR to carry out the works
and to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity of piles.
This bearing capacity measured in situ shall be compared to the evaluation made from basic geo-technical
survey.
Particular specifications shall define the test conditions. Tests shall be performed up to the soil failure;
taking into account that maximum elastic stress of pile materials shall not be reached.
The CONTRACTOR shall have to provide drawings, tests schedule and arrangement, for the COMPANY
agreement before starting tests.
Preliminary test results may involve the adaptation of the design of foundations, in agreement with the
COMPANY.
5.2.5.
Load Tests on Piles
The COMPANY may specify that some piles have to be tested after their completion.
Particular specifications will define the number of piles to be tested. These specifications will detail the test
conditions and measurements to be made.
Tests shall be made according to code requirements with test load limited to a value much lower than the
ultimate bearing capacity. This test load shall be deduced from the working load.
The CONTRACTOR shall have to provide test arrangement for the COMPANY agreement before carrying
out tests.
The whole set of tests shall be carried out under the control of COMPANY representative on site. A report
presenting the tests results shall be provided to the COMPANY. In case the COMPANY finds that results
are not satisfactory, the following may be requested:
o new tests,
o structural reinforcements such as replacing a failing pile
As a result of Construction CONTRACTOR failure, these operations shall be carried out at his expense.
5.2.6.
Anchorage Ties Testing
Particular specifications shall specify preliminary and acceptance tests to be carried out by the
Construction CONTRACTOR on anchorage ties, if any, necessary to retain diaphragm walls.
