Base isolation system installed after moving the
whole building eight meters while maintaining a
workable environment inside the building.
Reinforced concrete four-story structure with a total
weight of approximately 2,000 tons, dimensions of
16.4 x 29.1 meters, and height of 13.6 meters.
The moving of the building is to be carried out in 15
hours over two days.

Building-Moving Base Isolation Improvement Method (2)
The platform is 1500 m wide and 2000 m long to cover a railway area in Beijing City
(China). There are 50 house buildings (7-9 stories RC frame) built on the top floor of the
platforms.
The seismic safety of structures increases to 4 times. The construction cost could save 25%.
The environmental problems of railway vibration and noise in the city center area could be
solved.

Outrigger space frames and capital isolation
This outrigger frame was
required to prevent uplift in the
isolators by distributing the
overturning loads to the
perimeter
The isolators are placed at the top
of the first story walls, a
configuration referred to as
“capital isolation”
The rubber bearings were not protected against fire because they had no bearing
function.
The oil dampers had three purposes: (1) to block the horizontal motion for high
winds (velocity over 25 m/s), (2) to provide damping and (3) to re-center the
building after strong earthquakes.
The more damping capacity is incorporated to the isolation system, the bigger the
horizontal force and, hence, the bigger the overturning moment and the risk of uplift.
The ball bearings were able to resist tension forces up to near 1000 t.
