Good morning partners, today we are going to talk to you about monopolies, a very recognized
concept within the world of Economics. Our names are Geraldine Alarcón, Sharon Michel
Vásquez and Daniela Angola.
aprenderlos.

Monopoly is fundamental during the study of the economics, since it will give reason to the
actions of many industries already established. In the monopoly there will be strategies to
maximize the profits of the only offerer that will live in the market, it will have many
characteristics and curious data, which although the ones that we will present to you next, will
be very few in comparision of all that this concept contains, it will be enriching to learn them.
Duopolio: Por ejemplo, Pepsi y Coca-Cola
Inglés
A monopoly is an extreme form of market, what economists designate as an imperfect market,
where there is a single distributor, seller and producer. Here the entry of new bidders into the
market is limited.
Some types are (The examples will be told by a person other than the one who mentions the
type):
Pure monopoly. For example Microsoft
Artificial Monopoly: For example, product exclusivity agreements
Natural Monopoly: Public services
Oligopoly: The car market
Duopoly: For example Pepsi and Coca-Cola
4. El monopolista siempre quiere aumentar sus beneficios.
5. Es muy difícil acceder a este mercado
Inglés
1. There is only one producer and only one type of good.
2. There is market power, that is, the producer will be able to decide and intervene in
the price and quantity offered in the market, unlike perfect competition (Another
colleague intervenes and clarifies: That is, when there are many companies in the
market that They offer the same services), where there is an already established price
that cannot be changed.
3. There are no substitute goods to replace the product that the monopolistic company
offers, in other words, there are not many options to choose from.
4. The monopolist always wants to increase his profits.
It is very difficult to access this market
Inglés
Of course it is, as we said before, monopoly in economics is an imperfect market where,
moreover, social welfare is always affected. In other words, there is no remarkable economic
efficiency (there is no correct allocation of resources).
Inglés
On the other hand, the consumer (us), often we are forced to purchase the product under the
conditions of the monopolist, because there is little or no offer of the same. In other words,
there is a concentration of power.
Soluciones
For all this, anti-monopoly laws are usually implemented to ensure that there is no
concentration of power in the market that affects the proper circulation of the economy.
Preguntas
What examples of monopolies do you know here in Colombia?
