León’s Cathedral was not raised only to be contemplated. Its ori-
gin and meaning is, above all, to have been conceived as a work
for divine worship. This Pulchra Leonina (beautiful of León) was
designed and built at Medieval times when Cathedrals were the
epicenter of religious, social and political life. Everything in this
Cathedral, its orientation, the floor’s shape, its height, the reliefs
of the stones, the stained glass windows, its history and legend…
all in this marvel of Gothic art allows to admire the human work
and to recognize all divine inside it.
Dear reader, the magazine in your hands offers a different view of
León’s Cathedral, a temple which we want to tell you with a look
lent from León’s people, casual visitors, architects, bishops, kings,
pilgrims on route to Compostela, canons, popes, saints and faith-
ful who rest here... people who, over time, have dreamed, loved
and lived León’s Cathedral.
Walking inside and outside invites us to discover, in each of its
corners, passages of the biblical history of Salvation, of Catholic
tradition and of the life of man in this part of the world. Unique
works which have survived the passage of generations, hidden
images carved in stone, hundreds of anecdotes, famous people
and saints of the Church. We will discover ancient rites and shed
light on what happened, now happens and it will happen in a
Cathedral which, far away from what the passing of history makes
one suspect, is more alive than ever.
Do not stop reading us. REVISTA CATEDRAL DE LEÓN which borns
today thanks to the Cathedral’s Chapter will certainly help you to
feel the Pulchra Leonina as your own.

The Gothic Cathedral in body and soul
We discover the origins, the main charachters and the archi-
tectural features of this Spanish Gothic Cathedral which, un-
doubtelly, more faithfully preserves the “body and soul” with
which it was created more than 700 years ago.
38 Cabildo Catedral,

faithful to the beauty of León
The history and evolution of León’s Cathedral is closely linked to that of its
Cathedral’s Chapter, the true custodians of the temple.

sea o no creyente”

The Gothic Cathedral
in body and soul
León’s Cathedral perfectly reflects the spirit of this
Spanish region characterized by the nobility of its
people and the respect for their ancestors. It is, un-
doubtedly, the Spanish Cathedral which preserves in
a more pureness way the Gothic body and soul with
which it was created. In 2003, it was celebrated
the 7th anniversary of its worship dedication and,
despite the vicissitudes of history, the fragility of its
stone and the day’s inclemency, the Pulchra look at

At the break of dawn, while the day starts and the
stained glass windows wash down of dim light the
majestic halls of the central nave, a group of wise cross
slow but steady the main temple, way to the choir.
In it, loyal to their daily commitment in communion

men, with hard experience in life and in the learning
of science and faith who, even today, are the guardi-

E
leonesa. No obstante, la tradición oral y escrita an-
T
he Chapter of León’s Cathedral has its origin in
the 9th Century as it is in this period of history
when the own León diocese exists. However, oral
and written tradition earlier to this century put
the germ of the Chapter in the religious communities of
the Middle Ages, settled during the 4th Century in the city
around the temple, with the aim to assist the bishop in his
episcopal mission and also to look after the worships that
had to be made in the Holy Cathedral Church of St. María.
During this period, León’s Chapter had three orders still be-
ing all priests: priests, deacons, and sub-deacons. Each one
defined into four ranks: dignitaries, canons, prebendaries and
beneficiaries or ministres, highlighting among the dignitaries
the Dean, Prior, Precentor, Administrator, Maestrescuela, Ab-
bot of St. Guillermo, Abbot of St. Marcelo in addition to six
archdeacons with jurisdiction in the diocese: the one of Val-
deras, Mayorga, Cea, Saldaña, Benamariel, Triacastela (Lugo)
and four functions between the canons: Theologist, Confes-
sors, Master and Legal adviser, canons by public examintation
and by grace, pontifical, by presentation and by appointment
of the Bishop. These clerics developed their life together ac-
cording to the so-called vita canonica under the authority of
the bishop and by which they should live fulfilling a series of
rules which regulated it, with the aim of offering their lives to
the worship and service to the Cathedral.

daron otras instituciones igualmente importantes
tinados principalmente a atender pobres y necesi-

No obstante, todavía

the worship: the chancel and the choir. At the head, it is the ambulatory from which open several radial

Transept
sagrada. Sobre la sillería se inauguró en el 2013
el nuevo órgano de la Catedral.

Head
Following the traditional layout of Gothic cathedrals, there is around the chan-
cel one crossing nave called ambulatory. Walking through it we discover 5 cha-
pels of hexagonal floor which form the church’s apse. Among them, it highli-
ghts the chapel of the Virgen Blanca, chaired by this sculpture of stone which
until a few decades ago it could be found in the mullion of the main entrance.
The image of the Virgin, crowned, is showed under a canopy bringing Jesus
Child on her left arm while treading a dragon, symbol of victory over sin. The
figure of Christ blesses the faithful standing before him. The stained glass win-
dows of this chapel form a whole, as we see the birth of Christ in the middle
while at the sides the shepherds and the Kings get ready to worship the Child.
Faced with this chapel, the tomb of king Ordoño II. Under a splayed arch,
there is placed the sepulcher with the image of the reclining king. The tym-
panum of the arch exhibits two scenes, the Calvary and the Descent, and
the Resurrection on top. In the archivolts, arranged on leonine figures, they
appear vegetable elements in addition to more castles and lions, symbol of
the monarchy. The rest of the decoration of the tomb dates back, having the
whole work a rich polychromy.
The sepulcher is flanked by 2 remarkable paintings of Nicolás Francés: El
Llanto sobre Cristo Muerto and the Ecce Homo.

CLAUSTRO / Cloister
It was built in the 13th Century after being raised the Cathedral’s nave, but
it was remodeled by Juan de Badajoz el Mozo in the Renaissance. From
this intervention comes the decoration of the vaults and the upper balus-
trade, clearly seen from the outdoor part. The capitals of the columns are
decorated with scenes from the Old and New Testaments, and with other
ones related to saints, everyday issues and vegetal decoration. Thanks to
the cover with vaults, the mural paintings of Nicolás Francés which ex-
tend around the perimeter are largely preserved. They show the narration
of the most important episodes of the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary. As
usual, the cloister was a privileged environment for burials of nobles and
church worthies linked to the Cathedral’s Chapter. It highlights the one of
dean Martín Fernández, with reliefs of the Epiphany and the Calvary.
The figures occasionally distributed around the cloister are the originals
of the main façade which were removed from the doorjambs of the arca-
des in order to do a restoration.
MUSEO / Museum
It is one of the most important museums of its kind, being the union of
the Cathedral’s and the Diocesan’s museum. In the various rooms they
are exposed, fundamentally, works of religious art of broad chronology.
Without any doubt, it highlights the collection of Medieval images of the
Virgin Mary and the Crucifix as well as other notable pictorial and sculp-
tural pieces from the international Gothic, such as the canvas of Nicolás
Francés, the painting of Pedro de Campaña or the Crucifix of Juan de
Juni. We can also find a large number of textile works or even figures
belonging to the Baroque organ, which for a time was located on the
Cathedral’s choir. The staircase, work of Juan de Badajoz el Mozo, is
an outstanding example in this type of construction, with an abundance
of Renaissance ornamentation.

pregunta. ¿Cuántas naves tiene la Catedral? Claro, no me
Exacto, ¡buen trabajo!
See if you can guess the next question. How many naves does León’s Cathedral
have? Nave is the name given to that large corridors which run from one
Cathedral’s end to the other. Now you are able to count them, aren’t you?

pregunto y tú me respondes. ¿Cuántas torres hay? … ¿Cuántas puertas hay? … y ¿Cuántas
figuras decoran las puertas? …
Before leaving, can I ask you for a favor? Before going away from León’s Cathedral you have
to watch the main façade. And you have to make me a list. I ask you and you will answer me.
How many towers are there?... And how many doors?... How many figures decorate
the doors?... That’s a trap, because they are too many figures made of stone
which are distributed throughout the doors.
