Picote tequila

It is the picote tequila, that only inhabits a small lagoon located on the west coast of
Mexico, cataloged on the “red list” of the International Union for Conservation of Nature
as "Critically endangered".

Where is the picote tequila located?

Splitfin Tequila is a species of freshwater fish endemic to the Mexican federal state of Jalisco.
Historically, it was only known from the type locality, the Rio Teuchitlán at the headwaters of the
Rio Ameca, and it was thought to be Extinct in the wild since 1998, when it was first described.

Why is Picote Tequila in danger of extinction?

Picote Tequila is a species of freshwater fish known only from the Río Teuchitlán, the upper
drainage of the Río Ameca. It was thought to be extinct in the wild even before it was described
(1998), possibly due to habitat fragmentation, pollution and alteration through livestock and
competition through non-native fish species

Type of environment

Zoogoneticus tequila is a freshwater fish from the Teuchitlán River, head of the Ameca River which
flows to the Pacific Ocean.

Habitat

Fish are generally caught less than a meter deep. The water in this town was cloudy due to the
presence of cattle, pigs and horses. The bed is mainly muddy, but some sand and rocks are
present. The silt is abundant and the current is little to moderate. The water and air temperatures
were 26ºC. The water in this area is heavily used for irrigation, washing and drinking, and heavy
contamination from livestock and household waste was also found.

Risk factor's

In its natural environment the main factors, which have led to the possible extinction of the
species, are related to urban and agricultural pollution (cane and agave cultivation), as well as
habitat modification as a result of the construction of hydraulic works and recreation, as well as
the introduction of exotic species.

Relevance of the species

Picote tequila is an endemic species of the Teuchitlán River (Ameca River Basin), Jalisco, Mexico,
currently it is presumed that it is extirpated from nature, However, it is a good example of success
conservation, since in aquarium conditions specimens are maintained and preserved.

Possible solutions

One of the possible solutions could be the reduction of fishing in the area inhabited by the
endangered species in order to be able to conserve the specimens that are still there and increase
their population to keep the species alive for more years.

Another possible solution is to increase the protection of natural resources and take better care of
the fauna that inhabits the lake, which can be contaminated by garbage or human waste, which
are factors that damage the ecosystem of these species.

Reintroduction focuses on the area of the spring and subsequent sections of the river,
including mainly the area that is used as a drinking trough. The program includes a
complete extraction of non-native fish species from these sections and long-term species
control. In addition, the Teuchitlán River is a recognized Ramsar site, which means that
Tequila Splifin is included in any conservation action for this area.

Conclusion

The Mexican fish fauna is worldwide noteworthy for its high diversity and large number of
endemics. However, a large proportion of species, mainly from freshwaters are considered at
some level of risk. In addition, the number of extinct and endangered species grows day by day at
an accelerated rate. The threats to their survival are mainly anthropogenic, to which is added
some intrinsic characteristics of fish populations, as small population size and restricted habitats.
The water uses that lead to the disturbance or reduction of the aquatic habitats, highlights as the
leading cause of risk, followed by the introduction of exotic species.
