No podemos concebir un guía de turismo sin la competencia
lingüística comunicativa del llamado idioma universal.

Este material ha sido elaborado para aquellas personas que

WHAT IS A TOUR GUIDE?

1. DEFINITION OR DESCRIPTION OF A TOUR GUIDE

A tour guide is someone who shows visitors around an area, with the
guide using extensive local knowledge to share the area with visitors.
Tour guides are hired to help people navigate unfamiliar areas, and to
make trips special, as a good tour guide sets a positive tone for a trip and
shows people things they would not have discovered otherwise. Using a
tour guide while traveling can also be useful because tour guides are very
knowledgeable, and they can provide facts and information which help
visitors interpret and understand the places they see.

C. Have the personality to be outgoing, to like people and to enjoy their

work. At they same time, they can skillfully manage opposing interests in
a group setting, set limits and keep everyone on time and on task.

D. Have the judgment to gear the information they present to the interest
level of their clientele, the resourcefulness to adapt activities for varying
physical abilities, and the experience to provide alternatives when well-
laid plans go awry.

E. Have the maturity to not take things personally and to maintain

impact on others.

1.3 Skills and requirements of a Tour Guide

The job of a tourist guide is satisfying, exciting, and challenging. However,

there are a few special requirements that you should have in order to
be good at this. In addition to having knowledge about your locale’s
attractions, flora, fauna, society, and geography, you need to have
exemplary research skills. That is because tourists want to know more
relevant and interesting information of a site, structure, or attraction than
what is obvious or printed in a guide book

2. TYPES OF TOUR GUIDES

Some tour guides work primarily locally, focusing on providing services

to tourists by request. They may work in museums or similar locations,
or they may work with or for companies which take tourists out on day
trips of an area. Tour guides might lead visitors on tours of local religious
sites, castles, gardens, or other sites of interest, tailoring the tour for the
visitors. Locally-based tour guides are also often able to open doors which
would otherwise be closed, and their local knowledge can be helpful for
people who are unfamiliar with the culture and traditions of an area.

Other tour guides travel with their clients, guiding them to, around, and
from various locations. For example, a group of people who want to hike
in the rainforest might hire a tour guide who travels with them, guides
them through the forest while providing information and assistance, and
travels back. Tour guides of this type often work with travel agents, with

the agent handling the logistics of transportation, lodging, and so forth,

while the tour guide focuses on caring for the clients.

2.1. Locally-based tour guides

The destination-based tour guide jobs are

the most common type. As the name would
suggest, these guides simply stay at the same
location, often work a fairly regular shift,
and show things they are familiar with. The
benefit of this type of tour guide is that they
have a local’s knowledge of the area. They COLOM

may also have the contacts to achieve access

to locations that many would otherwise not
get to see. The downside is these guides are LOCALL

usually not available all the time for advice TOUR G D

and guidance, and they will be going to more
of the same places over and over, which might
get boring for some people.

2.2. Travel tour guide

Travel tour guide jobs involve going with a group of people. In some cases,
such as bus tours, the itinerary is all laid
out ahead of time. The guide simply goes
along to explain what is coming up next
on the trip, and what the travelers can
expect. In most cases, the guide will be
very familiar with the fixed route, having
gone on it multiple times with different
groups. This also helps provide a familiarity
with the places visited. These types of
UID E S tour guides may also work on cruise
TOUR G
TRAVEL ships, taking passengers on excursions in
different ports of call.

2.3.Travel planner.

Another type of travel tour guide job involves the tour guide actually
planning the complete itinerary. This often happens when social groups or

organization sponsored tours to different

places. In that case, the tour guide is
responsible for not only finding places that
will interest travelers, but also arranging
accommodations and all transportation. In
many cases, the guide may work through

a third-party vendor to make all these

arrangements seamlessly.

3. IMPORTANDE OR ROL OF A TOUR GUIDE

Tourist guiding has an important and multifaceted role in contemporary

tourism. A safe and quality experience offered by a guided tour involves
the guide, tourists and the environment, and is fulfilled when all the
three components interact at the same point in space and time. The role
of guides in the tourism system distinguishes itself by its potential to
manage and orchestrate tourist experiences, enhance destination image
and implement the goals of responsible tourism. What guides present and
interpret takes effect on the way in which their customers experience a
place or attraction, understand local culture, engage in local activities and
how they behave on the spot. As front-line professionals, information-
givers and interpreters, the guides act as destination’s representatives
and „ambassadors” in the eyes of tourists. Tourist guiding is one of the
important factors of successful presentation of destinations in contemporary
tourism, affecting the resulting economic and social benefits.

3.1. Guides are representatives

Guides are representative of the cities for which they are qualified and
they interpret the culture and heritage of the area. Guides help travelers

to understand the culture of the region and the way of life its inhabitants.

3.2. Promote the cultural and natural heritage

Tour guides promote the cultural and natural heritage and on other hand
make the visitors aware of its importance. Guide provides full information
about the features and history of the location. As the importance of places
is known by the guide, he will educate and narrates you all the local stories,
history and culture as and when the location comes. The importance is
placed on the guide’s knowledge; he will try his best to explain you in
language you know..
