I am learning how to drive a car. A week ago I had my first lesson. Yesterday my instructor
took me out on some busy streets. They were full of cars and people. I drove very slowly
and carefully, but I was afraid the whole time. Finally the lesson was over and I went home.
I felt very tired. I have learned quite a bit, but I still have a lot to learn.

On holidays nobody likes staying at home. People go on picnics, take trips or
visit friends and relatives. We have quite a few parks with good campgrounds
in this part of the country and my friends and I often go camping. Sometimes
the parks are crowded, but we do not mind. We go on hikes and explore the
country around us. After dark, we sit around an open fire and talk for hours.
We can forget all our problems and enjoy the outdoors.

Durante las vacaciones, a nadie le gusta quedarse en casa. La gente va de
picnic, hace viajes o visita amigos y familiares.

The young man heard a cry and turned around, but he could not see anybody. At the same
moment, a boy ran up to him and pointed towards the river. They both ran along the river
back and after a short time they saw a girl in the water. The girl was holding on to a log, but
the current was fast and it was carrying her away. The man acted quickly. He pulled off his
shoes and his coat, jumped into the water and saved the girl’s life.

Last weekend I flew for the first time in my life. I generally travel by bus or by car. It
seems safer to me. But this was an unexpected business trip. At the beginning, I did not feel
very happy about flying. This feeling did not last long. The trip was very exciting. We were
soon flying high in the sky. It was a clear day and the view of mountains, fields and rivers
was beautiful. I enjoyed my short and comfortable flight very much.
Summary.
Mr. and Mrs. Allen go grocery shopping on Saturday mornings. Mr. Allen never enjoys
these trips. Mrs. Allen does the shopping and he sits in the car and waits for her. This
morning there were a lot of people and it took Mrs. Allen longer than usual. An hour went
by and finally a man came up to Mr. Allen “Excuse me,” he said, “is your name Allen?
Your wife is waiting for you at the check-out counter. She doesn’t have enough money for
the groceries!”

Last week I went out to lunch with my friend George. George is very fat. He likes good
food- and a lot of it. We sat at a big round table in the restaurant. After a big meal we had
some dessert and drank several cups of coffee. “we really must go now, George” I said.
“we have been here for over three hours. It’s four-thirty.”
“what do you mean” asked George in surprise. “we can’t leave now. It’s nearly time for
dinner!”

I worked as a mailman for a short time. However, I am afraid of dogs and I had a lot of
trouble. One day I tried to deliver some letters to a big house. I started to open the gate and
all of a sudden a huge dog ran toward me. It growled and barked at me, so I threw the
letters over the fence. The dog picked them up and carried them into the house. The dog
was a better mailman than I was!

It rained a lot last winter and the little stream near our house turned into a big river. It
overflowed and flooded all the fields around our house. Luckily, the water did not reach
any of these houses in our area, but the flood washed away our beautiful wooden bridge.
The bridge was more than forty years old and we were sorry to lose it. We are building a
new one now, but it will never be the same.

The children next door often play baseball in the yard and sometimes break my bedroom
window. Last Saturday afternoon I stayed at home and watched TV. After a while, I close
my eyes and went to sleep. A sound at the door made me wake up suddenly. A little boy
appeared at the door.
“Not one of my windows again!” I said.
“Oh, no!” answered the boy. “your window was open this time and our ball is in your
bedroom. Can we get it please?”.

Mrs. Mills often spends too much money on clothes. She does not need new clothes, but
she loves buying them. Yesterday she saw a beautiful coat in a store window. She went in
and tried it on. It was just the right size, but it was very expensive. Mrs. Mills did not have
enough money with her, so she charged it to her account. Then she took the coat home and
showed it to her husband. After that, she showed him the sales slip for $200. He liked the
coat very much, but he didn’t like the price!
