En 1569, después de batirse en due-
lo con su rival Antonio Segura, al que
malhiere, Miguel de Cervantes huye
de Madrid condenado a arresto y am-
putación de la mano derecha, la mano
con la que escribiría años más tarde
El Quijote. Había nacido en la cercana
ciudad de Alcalá de Henares en 1547,
pero llevaba viviendo en la Corte des-
de 1566. No volvería a España hasta
20 años más tarde, después de luchar
en Lepanto, donde perdió la movili-
dad del brazo izquierdo, y de un lustro
de cautiverio en Argel. Cuando regre-
sa a Madrid coincide con los grandes
autores del Siglo de Oro, como Queve-
do y Lope de Vega, y trata de triunfar
en los corrales de comedias donde
no consigue demasiado éxito. Vuelve
a abandonar la ciudad entre 1587 y
1601, periodo en el que trabaja como
Comisario del Rey en Andalucía. Aun-
que El Quijote obtuvo un enorme re-
conocimiento en vida del autor, y fue
traducido muy pronto al inglés y al
francés, siempre se ha dicho que el
“Príncipe de los Ingenios” murió po-
bre en 1616.
In 1569 Miguel de Cervantes, born in
1547 in the nearby city of Alcalá de
Henares, grievously injured his rival
Antonio Segura in a duel. A warrant
was issued for his arrest and, fac-
ing amputation of his right hand (the
hand with which years later he would
write Don Quixote), he decided to flee
Madrid, where he had been living
since 1566. He returned to Spain 20
years later, after losing the use of his
left arm at the Battle of Lepanto and
being held prisoner in Algiers for five
years. Back in Madrid he coincided
with some of the other great writers
of the Spanish Golden Age such as
Quevedo and Lope de Vega. A keen
playwright, he tried his luck in cor-
rales de comedias courtyard theatres,
but had little success. He left the city
again between 1587 and 1601, during
which time he worked as the King’s
Commissioner in Andalusia. Although
Don Quixote was met with great ac-
claim across Europe and was quickly
translated into French and English,
the Prince of Wit – as he was known
- died in poverty in 1616.

Entre las huertas del Prado, de cuyas fuentes
dice Cervantes en Viaje al Parnaso que “manan
néctar” y “llueven ambrosía”, y los corrales
de comedias de la calle del Príncipe, surge
a finales del siglo XVI el Barrio de las Letras,
escenario de amistades y afrentas entre los
más grandes escritores de la lengua españo-
la. Aquí vivieron Lope de Vega, a quien por su
éxito tanto envidiaría el autor de El Quijote,
o Góngora y Quevedo, que se desacreditaban
mutuamente con poemas satíricos.
The Literary Quarter sprung up in the late 16th
century amidst the gardens of Prado Viejo -
whose fountains Cervantes said in Journey to
Parnassus “flowed with nectar” and “rained
ambrosia” - and amongst the corrales de
comedias on Calle del Príncipe. The neigh-
bourhood was a place where friendships
were forged and insults traded between the
greatest writers in the history of the Span-
ish language. Illustrious residents included
the hugely successful Lope de Vega, who was
greatly envied by the author of Don Quixote,
and Góngora and Quevedo, who publically dis-
paraged each other in satirical poems.

Esta taberna castiza, abierta en 1827, se en-
cuentra en el mismo edificio en el que Miguel
de Cervantes vivió y escribió Los trabajos de
Persiles y Sigismunda y la segunda parte de
El Quijote. Además de ofrecer una tradicional
cocina madrileña, sus salones guardan re-
cuerdos del ambiente literario del barrio. Años
más tarde Cervantes viviría en el número 2 de
la calle de los Francos, calle que ahora lleva
su nombre.
This traditional taberna, which opened in 1827,
is located in the same building where Miguel
de Cervantes lived and wrote The Trials of
Persiles and Sigismunda and the second part
of Don Quixote. In addition to offering tradi-
tional Madrid fare, its dining rooms are full
of reminders of the neighbourhood’s literary
history. The great writer also lived at number
2 Calle de los Francos, a nearby street which
has since been renamed after him.

En este edificio se imprimió en 1605 la prime-
ra edición de El Quijote, cuyo título comple-
to es El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quijote de La
Mancha. Hoy es la sede de la Sociedad Cer-
vantina y acoge una reproducción exacta de
la imprenta de tipos móviles que vio nacer la
obra cumbre de la literatura española.

1605. Today it is the headquarters of Sociedad
Cervantina, a society dedicated to the author,
and it harbours an exact reproduction of the
movable type printing press used to print the
first edition of Spanish literature’s most im-
portant oeuvre.

El Teatro Español se encuentra en el mismo
lugar donde estuvo el Corral del Príncipe, uno
de los seis corrales de comedias que llegó a
haber en el Madrid del Siglo de Oro. De martes
a viernes por la mañana se organizan visitas
guiadas para conocer su interior. Aunque las
obras de Cervantes nunca cosecharon el éxito
de las de Lope de Vega, el teatro fue su gran
vocación.
Teatro Español is located on the site where El
Corral del Príncipe, one of the six courtyard
theatres that existed in Madrid during the
Spanish Golden Age, once stood. Guided tours
of the inside of the building are conducted in
the morning from Tuesday to Friday. Although
Cervantes’ plays never achieved the same lev-
el of success as those of Lope de Vega, theatre
was always his great passion.

En 1580 los monjes trinitarios reunieron el res-
cate necesario para liberar a Cervantes, cauti-
vo en Argel desde hacía un lustro. El “Príncipe
de los Ingenios” estaría siempre agradecido
a la orden y expresó su deseo de ser ente-
rrado en la iglesia del convento de las Trini-
tarias Descalzas de San Ildefonso de Madrid.
In 1580, Trinitarian monks raised enough mon-
ey to free Cervantes who had been held prison-
er in Algiers for five years. The “Prince of Wit”
would forever remain grateful to the order, and
he even expressed his will to be buried in Ma-
drid’s Convent of the Barefoot Trinitarians.

Durante los siglos XIX y XX la figura de Miguel
de Cervantes se reivindicó a través de nume-
rosos monumentos en su honor. Además, el
instituto encargado de difundir el estudio de
la lengua y la cultura españolas, lleva su nom-
bre y tiene su sede en Madrid.

monuments were erected in his honour. The
institute tasked with disseminating Spanish
language and culture bears his name and is
headquartered in Madrid.

las Cariátides, el antiguo Banco Español del

Debido a unas obras de restauración realiza-
das en 2009, bajo el pedestal de esta estatua
de 1834, obra de Juan Vancell, se encontró
una cápsula del tiempo de la que no se tenía
noticia. El tesoro eran 41 documentos, entre
ellos diversas ediciones de El Quijote y una
biografía de Cervantes escrita en el siglo XIX.
When restoration work was carried out in
2009, a remarkable time capsule was dis-
covered under the pedestal of this statue
which was made in 1834 by Juan Vancell. It
contained a treasure trove of 41 documents,
including several editions of Don Quixote and
a biography of Cervantes written in the 19th
century.

La fuente de Cervantes fue promovida por Al-
fonso XIII en 1916 con motivo del tercer cente-
nario de la publicación de la segunda parte de
El Quijote y terminada en la década de 1960.
The Cervantes Fountain was commissioned by
Alfonso XIII in 1916 for the 300th anniversary
of the publication of the second part of Don
Quixote. It was completed in the 1960s.
03. ALCALÁ DE HENARES
A solo 30 kilómetros de Madrid se encuentra
la ciudad natal del escritor, donde puede vi-
sitarse su casa museo y se encuentra la sede
histórica de la Universidad Complutense, el
Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso. Su paraninfo
acoge cada 23 de abril, Día Internacional del
Libro, la entrega del Premio Cervantes, máxi-
mo galardón de las letras hispanas. Renfe
ofrece un servicio especial, el Tren de Cer-
vantes, que hace el viaje desde la estación de
Atocha animado por un grupo de actores que
interpretan los entremeses cervantinos. Más

In the city where Cervantes was born, which
lies just 30 kilometres from Madrid, you’ll find
the writer’s house-museum, open to the pub-
lic, and the Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso,
the historical seat of Complutense University.
Every year on 23 April, International Book Day,
the building’s assembly hall hosts the cere-
mony for the Cervantes Prize, the most pres-
tigious award in Spanish-language literature.
Renfe also runs the special Cervantes train,
which departs from Atocha station in Madrid
and features a group of actors performing
some of the great writer’s entremeses (short
