Environmental impacts and cost overrun derived from adjustments of a

road construction project setting

Road infrastructure works are extremely important in the economic and social development of a
country, these studies are the fundamental pillar for the optimal execution of the road project, to
guarantee the economic, environmental and technical viability of the work, most of the works are
presented jointly with others since when carrying out the construction of a road this directly or
indirectly will affect surrounding roads . we must consider the project as an integral one and this
indicates that any modification of the project will affect everything else .almost all executive
construction projects must be readjusted due to the inconveniences that begin to occur in the
course of the work, such as inaccuracies in the study of soils, environmental factors that produce
delays in labor or simply delay in the arrival of some material, the adjustments of the executive
project account for the average increase of 16% of environmental impacts.

this article talks about the cost overruns of work in turn of the environmental impacts will be
taken as a reference two scenarios to be able to make an objective comparison of data, in this
study the critical stage were the activities in which clay extraction was carried out, the
construction of embankments, the construction of bases and the Executive projects based on
incomplete studies require readjustments in the executive project during road construction.
Although the volume of clay that was removed is five times greater than that of the aggregate
material, this did not prevent the impacts of the exploration and processing of the aggregates
from being 27% greater, than when compared with scenarios studied previously.but not only this
but the costs were higher by 30% in general with the other scenarios studied being the activity
that had the most cost overrun was that of the paving, the reason for cost overruns. They are due
to the delays produced in the execution of the work this due to the poor planning of the
movement of the soils and the misuse that occurred in the rock aggregates.

all this can be avoided by having a good executive design of the road, a good decision making in
the course of the work and a good planning can help to provide contractual events and mitigate
environmental impacts in turn reduce the time of the work in this decision making and good
execution can help us the LCA application (evaluation significantly reducing the error in decision
making or planning in the execution of the work. With this planning in this country we could
develop road works more precisely both technically and environmentally but in turn we would
reduce costs significantly and the delay in works would be significantly reduced, due to the poor
execution of the design of the roads in Colombia we see so bad roads and very little structural
progress of them, the inflation of the costs generated in the roads of the country produces that
the roads to be carried out are for certain sectors causing inequality and little development 4n
municipalities of low road accessibility an application like this would help to produce many more
roads and better develop the economy.
