Coober Pedy is a town in South Australia. Not many people live in Coober Pedy.

Fewer than 2,000 people live there. Coober Pedy is a small town, but it is

famous. It is famous because many of the world’s opalscome from this town.

An opal is a kind of blue stone that is very beautiful, and it costs a lot of

money. Opals, however, are not easy to find. People work hard to diginto the

ground to get them. Coober Pedy is famous for a second, more specialreason:

about 1,500 people there live in about 1,000 undergroundhomes called

“dugouts”!

The first question people ask when they find out about Coober Pedy is, “Why

do the people in Coober Pedy live underground?” The answer is Coober Pedy is

locatedin a very hot desert. It is more than 40 degrees Celsius in the summer!

People want to live underground because it is cool underground. Then, they

don’t need to use air conditioners. There are also five underground churches,

some underground hotels and a few underground stores. There is another

good reason to live underground. It is very easy to make your small home

become a big home. When you want more space to live, you can just dig a new

room!

However, Andy Sheils lives in Coober Pedy and he says there is a problem. He

says when visitors first come to his town, they don’t see any houses. They are

confused. They say, “Where is the place? I don’t understand!”

1. Coober Pedy is a small town in South Australia.

2. People there dig holes  into the ground to get opals.

Reading

Read the text“A Short History of the Olympics”. Then, choose the option that

best answers the question.

A Short History of the Olympics

A Short History of the Olympics Athletes competed in the first Olympic Games

in Greece almost three thousand years ago in 776 BC. Every four years, people

from Greek city-states (and later the Roman empire) traveled to a place called

Olympia to watch the games, which continued until 393 AD. They lasted from

between one and five days, and only men were allowed to compete in the

games. Many of the sports events were similar to those found in today’s

modern games where athletes run, jump and throw.

The modern Olympic Games began with the creation of the International

Olympic Committee (the IOC) in 1894 and Greece was the first country to hold

the games, in the city of Athens, in 1896. Fourteen countries with 241 athletes

competed in fortythree events. Although some people wanted to have the

games in Athens every four years, the IOC decided to have them in different

countries and cities. In 1900, they were held in Paris and women were allowed

to compete in the games for the first time. The first Winter Olympic Games

were held in 1924 and athletes competed in events such as skating and ice

hockey. Over 200 countries now compete in the Summer Olympic Games. The

number of events has increased to 300 events and instead of five days of

competition, the games now last for seventeen days.

There are some problems, however. There were no Olympic games held in 1916,

1940 and 1944 because of war. Also, some athletes use drugs to help them win.

In addition, the games are very expensive. The 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, for

example, cost $US50 billion. Nevertheless, the Olympic Games continue to be

extremely popular all over the world.

Dear Rob,

Thanks for your response. It is nice reading about the sports you do at your

school. I want to try tennis because it is not so popular around here, maybe

you can teach me how to play it.

In my school, we only have basketball, soccer and swimming classes, but the

most famous is soccer, maybe because we do have many teams to follow.

We don't have any after class sports clubs here, but we also get together to

play soccer after school finishes, most of the times we do it on Mondays and I

enjoy to go out and ride my bike every weekend with friends or with my

family, it is very popular at the moment.

Answering your question, we do practice surf in Costa Rica, there are many

places to go and beaches to surf. My favorite is Playa Hermosa, it's really

pretty and cool to surf. Maybe we can go there the next time you visit and

also try new tricks. What do you think about that?
