RESUMEN
ABSTRACT
Chronic kidney failure (CKD) is the most common kidney disease in geriatric dogs,
however, it can affect canines of any age. That is why it is important to determine
the concentration of urea and creatinine to establish kidney function. In the present
study, serum urea and creatinine concentrations were determined in 64 clinically
healthy geriatric canines from 7 years of age onwards. Their health status was
established, the signs and data of the patient were recorded, whole blood was
collected from the cephalic vein, in tubes without anticoagulant, the sera were
separated by centrifugation, which were analyzed using a UV spectrophotometer,
using commercial kits of kinetic method, following the protocols described by the
laboratory for urea and creatinine. The following results were obtained: the mean
urea in geriatric canines was 36.18 mg / dl, the minimum value of urea was 1.38
mg / dl, the maximum value was 120.20 mg / dl, the coefficient of variation was
53.67%. The mean creatinine was 1.37 mg / dl, the minimum value was 0.14 mg /
dl, the maximum value was 6.80 mg / dl, the coefficient of variation was 73.51%.
According to the degrees of chronic renal failure of the IRIS applied in the canines
studied, 65.6% have CRF grade I, 23.4% have CRF grade II, 9.38% have CRF
grade III and 1.56% has grade IV CRI. The relationship between the urea and
creatinine values with the sex of the geriatric canines was not significant (p≥0.05).
The relationship between age and urea was not significant either (p≥0.05);
However, the relationship between age and creatinine was highly significant
(p≤0.05), the older the creatinine increases, that is, age is a risk factor for the
appearance of CRF.
