El 

carnaval 
es una fiesta propia de varios países cristianos y también no
cristianos, que tiene lugar inmediatamente antes de
la cuaresma cristiana (que se inicia con el Miércoles de Ceniza), y que
tiene fecha variable (entre febrero y marzo según el año).
Tradicionalmente comienza un jueves y acaba el martes siguiente
(martes de carnaval). El carnaval combina elementos tales como
disfraces, grupos que cantan coplas, desfiles y fiestas en la calle.

Ash Wednesday), and which has a variable date (between February
and March depending on the year). It traditionally begins on a

origen del carnaval en Venezuela

El Carnaval en Venezuela se inició en los tiempos de la
Colonia, consistía en juegos rudos cuya arma era agua,
polvos y otras sustancias. Además, se realizaban bailes
callejeros en los que hombres y mujeres compartían gestos
considerados amorales. En pleno siglo XVIII el Obispo de
Caracas Diez Madroñero, convirtió el carnaval en tres días de
rezos, rosarios y procesiones. Años más tarde el Intendente
José Abalos devolvió su significado original y retomó el
carnaval, pero con elementos refinados. Se incluyeron
comparsas, carrozas y confites para las familias que salían a
las calles para presenciar el desfile. Y se procuró eliminar los
violentos juegos de antaño.

consisted of rough games whose weapon was water, powders
