1.1.1. Heterogeneous.
Heterogeneous mixtures are substances that are made up two or more components.
we can easily distinguish these components just by looking at them. their particles are
larger than 10 elevado a -6.
The components of heterogeneous system can be separated by mechanical methods
(filtration, decantation, etc.)
Between true heterogeneous systems and homogeneous systems there are colloidal
systems.
There are mixtures that have at least two phases: one is finely divided into small
particles and is surrounded by the other substance.
Colloids are easily distinguished from homogeneous systems by the Tyndall effect.
This is the dispersion of light when it passes through colloids. An example is the
dispersion o light through dust particles in the beam of a torch.
1.1.3. Homogeneous.
Homogeneous mixtures are substances that are made up of two or more components.
The size of the particles is less than 10-9. The cannot be distinguished visually.
2. SOLUTIONS.
When a substance dissolves in another, the particles of one component separate then
disperse in the other.
3. TYPES OF SOLUTIONS.
3.1. Depending on the physical state of the components.
We can see all the possible combination of solutions systems organised in the
following table:
As the particles of gases move freely, they spread out easily, obtaining a homogeneous
mixture very quickly.
The most important example is air. It contains a mixture of gases in slightly variable
proportions: nitrogen , oxygen, carbon dioxide and argon.
The most important liquid solutions are those that involve water.
When the forces with which the solvent molecules attract the particles of the solid are
greater than the forces acting between them, the particles separate and scatter
forming a solution.
Gases always dissolve in water.
The most important ones are alloys. An alloy is a mixture of metales that is obtained by
mixing together the melted components and cooling the mixture.
3.2. Depending on the proportion of the components.
The amount of a solute that can be added to solution is variable. There are
different types of solutions depending on the relative proportions of the
components.
This is a fixed proportion for each pair of solute and solvent at a certain
temperature.
Solubility can be expressed in grams of solute per litre of solvent (g/l).
4. Concentration of solutions.
