THE EARTH
EL UNIVERSO / THE UNIVERSE
The Universe consists of celestial bodies such as galaxies, planetary systems, stars, planets,
satellites and asteroids.
Most astronomers believe the Universe began with a huge explosion called the Big Bang
about 14 billion years ago.
estrellas.
Asteroids are large pieces of rock that orbit around stars.
Meteors are small rocks that burn when they enter the Earth's atmosphere.
Meteorites are meteors which hit the Earth's surface.
The Earth revolves around the Sun. This movement is called revolution. It takes 365 days
(one year) to orbit the Sun.
The Earth's inclination towards the Sun changes when the Earth orbits the Sun. Some
parts of the Earth receive more sun than others during the year because its tilted axis.
This produces the four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter.

The Moon is the Earth's satellite. It orbits around the Earth. It takes around 28 days to
revolve around the Earth.
The Moon also rotates on its axis. Its rotation takes around 28 days. That's why we always
see the same side from the Earth.
The phases of the Moon.
Satellites are non-luminous celestial bodies. The Moon only looks bright because the Sun
shines on it.
Changes in the Moon's position compared to the Earth and the Sun mean we can see all of
it, part of it or none of it. These are called the phases of the Moon.
