Machu Picchu
The legendary Peruvian citadel of Machu Picchu is the most
familiar icon of the Inca civilization. Located in the Sacred
Valley, which is 50 miles (80 kilometers) northwest of Cuzco, it
was constructed around 1450 at the height of the Inca empire.
Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu served as an
estate for the Inca Emperor Pachacutec (1438-1472) and was
abandoned just over 100 years later in 1572 because of the
Spanish Conquest. Machu Picchu was rediscovered in 1911
by American historian and explorer Hiram Bingham. In 1983,
UNESCO designated Machu Picchu as a World Heritage Site.
La legendaria ciudadela peruana de Machu Picchu es el
ejemplo más conocido de la Civilización Inca. Está ubicado en
el Valle Sagrado el cual se encuentra a 80 km. (50 millas) al
noroeste del Cusco y fue construida alrededor del año 1450
en lo mas alto del Imperio Inca. La mayoría de los arqueólogos
creen que Machu Picchu servía como una residencia para el
emperador Inca Pachacutec (1438-1472) y que fue abandonada
100 años después en 1572 debido a la Conquista Española.
Machu Picchu fue redescubierta en 1911 por el historiador y
explorador americano Hiram Bingham. En 1983, la UNESCO
designó Machu Picchu como Patrimonio de la Humanidad.

Temple of the Condor
The Temple of the Condor is a
breathtaking example of Inca
stonemasonry. A natural rock
formation began to take shape

into the outspread wings of a
condor in flight.
