General information
Cubriendo un área de 1,600 km², el Parque Nacional Los
Haitises es una de las joyas del sistema de parques
nacionales de República Dominicana.
Los Haitises, which translates to “mountainous land” in the
Taíno language, attracts multiple visitors who come here by
boat to see its magnificent series of rock formations rising out
of the water.

Flora:
La flora de Los Haitises se caracteriza por sus dos zonas
de vida: el bosque húmedo subtropical (Bh-S) y el bosque
muy húmedo subtropical (Bmh-S).
It conserves forest remnants representative of broadleaf
species such as cabirma santa (Guarea trichiliodes),
cedar (Cedrela odorata), ceiba (Ceiba pentandra),
mahogany (Swietenia mahagoni), copey (Clusia rosea)
and hojancha (Coccoloba pubescens). In addition,
numerous species of orchids abound.
La fauna de Los Haitises es de una gran variedad y la
de mayor representatividad nacional de todas las áreas
naturales protegidas en República Dominicana, debido
a la diversidad de sus ambientes.
Some of these species are the pelican or gannet
(Pelecanus occidentalis), the earwig (Fregata
magnificens), the parrot (Amazona ventralis), the owl
(Tyto alba) and the little eared owl (Asio stygius). Los
Haitises National Park is one of the last refuges for
the Hispaniola hawk (Buteo ridgwayi) an endemic
bird that, together with the Antillean manatee, are the
most endangered species in the Dominican Republic.
