UNESCO is the lead United Nations agency for Physical Education and Sport.
Sport has historically played an important role in all societies, whether in the
form of sports competitions, physical activities or games. But one may wonder:
what does sport have to do with the United Nations? Indeed, sport is a natural
partner for the United Nations (UN) system, including UNESCO:
Sports and games are human rights that must be respected and applied
throughout the world;
Sport, due to its low economic cost and high efficiency, is being used as a
working tool in development and peace building projects, not only by agencies
of the United Nations system, but also by non-governmental organizations.
(NGOs), governments, development agencies, sports federations, armed forces
and the media.
