GALILEO GALILEI
He was born in the city of Pisa (Italy), within a family of merchants. At the age of ten,
his parents moved to Florence, leaving him in the care of a religious neighbor who
would eventually introduce him into ecclesiastical life. A few years later, as soon as he
found out; his father, a not very devout man, took his son from the convent in which
he was and enrolled him at the University of Pisa
to study medicine.
The other process called "Peruvian wart", had equal geographical distribution, but of benign
evolution; with the sudden appearance of cutaneous nodules and few general symptoms. Until
then it was considered that both pictures had different aetiology.
Carried by his investigative spirit, he did not hesitate to inoculate macerated blood from a
Verrucous tumor of the patient Carmen Paredes, admitted to the Mercedes Room of Dos de
Mayo Hospital in Lima, so on August 27, 1885, he asked Dr. Evaristo M. Chávez to inoculate
him.
At twenty-one days he felt the first symptoms of the Fever of the Oroya, that continued with
its characteristic evolution, before the anguish of its professors and friends.
Carrión personally wrote his medical record until September 26, when, burdened by fever and
anemia, he entered into delirium, leaving, at his request, his companions to follow the
transcendent clinical document that heroically had initiated that one.
His death occurred on October 5, 1885, a date that is remembered every year as THE "DAY OF
PERUVIAN MEDICINE".
It is undoubted that Carrión with his scientific experience clarified the enigma of the Fever of
the Oroya, leaving sitting the unit of that pathological phenomenon: the serious anemia and
the eruptive form are two expressions of the same entity.
On October 7, 1991, the Peruvian government promulgated Law No. 25342, which declared
Daniel Alcides Carrión García "National Hero".
