Galaxias maculatus, Galaxias platei y Trichomycterus areolatus.

Zooplankton interactions with the oxygen minimum zone in the eastern south pacific
Provedor de dados: 72
Autores: Escribano,Rubén.
Zooplankton in the coastal upwelling zone off the eastern South Pacific must cope with a shallow oxygen minimum zone. In this
work, I summarize available information on the zooplankton species that interact with the OMZ in the upwelling region off
northern Chile. Data are available from the MinOx cruise carried out in March 2000 and the ZOMEI cruise perfomed in October
2005, both onboard the R/V Vidal Gormaz of the Chilean navy. Nineteen species of copepods and 10 of euphausiids were
analyzed in their vertical distribution and migrating behavior. Several abundante species appeared constrained by the OMZ and
restricted to the upper 50m layer. However, other abundant species inhabit temporarily or permanently the OMZ contributing
substantially to the...

Caracterización trófica de Orestias (Teleostei: Cyprinodontidae) en el Parque Nacional Lauca
Provedor de dados: 72
Autores: GUERRERO,CLAUDIA J; POULIN,ELIE; MÉNDEZ,MARCO A; VILA,IRMA.

Leaf litter decomposition from native and non-native species in a freshwater forested wetland of Chile
Provedor de dados: 72
Autores: Gómez-Capponi,Francisco; Correa-Araneda,Francisco; Díaz,Ma Elisa; Olguín,Manuel; Encina-Montoya,Francisco;
Figueroa,Ricardo.
ABSTRACT Decomposition of leaf litter is a fundamental process for the functioning of forested wetlands. The rapid increment
of forest plantations has involved a greater contribution of leaf litter of exotic origin to these ecosystems. The decomposition rate
between leaf litter of native and exotic origin in a forested wetland of the Mediterranean zone of Chile was compared, as well as
the contribution of bacteria and macroinvertebrate to this process. It was determined that the decomposition rate of the leaf litter
presented significant differences (p < 0.05) between species, being faster in those of non-native origin. This could be due to
differences in ecophysiological aspects of the leaves like the presence of chemical compounds such as waxes or...

Effect of PHA and LPS on the Activity of Nonspecific Cytotoxic Cells and Macrophages of Rainbow
Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
Provedor de dados: 72
Autores: Gómez,Leonardo A; Cortés,Raúl; Smith,Carlos T.
This work studied the effect of the lectin phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) and bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on the activity of
nonspecific cytotoxic cells (NCCs) and macrophages of peripheral blood in the rainbow trout. NCCs are cells of the innate
immunity, homologues to Natural Killer (NK) cells of mammals, capable of eliminating cells infected with intracellular pathogens
and also tumoral cells. Their lytic activity is mediated by the perforin/granzyme system and the Fas receptor-Fas ligand (FasR-
FasL) system. Activity of NCCs was evaluated by their capacity to lyse HL-60 tumor cells. On the other hand, macrophages
eliminate microorganisms by several mechanisms, including the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide
(NO). Results...

A new species Chaetauchenium loki, is described from Parque Oncol in Chile. This species, C. convexipennis (Fairmaire) and
Parhypates (Antarctobium) magellanicum (Fairmaire) share a combination of features distinct from all other species attributed to
Parhypates and from all other species of South American Pterostichini. To reflect this, Chaetauchenium is elevated as a distinct
genus and Antarctobium is considered congeneric. Individuals of these species have highly variable and unusual patterns of
supernumerary or reduced numbers of setae and variation in secondary sexual characters. Males have denticulate and falciform
aedeagal parameres and females have a digitiform diverticula at the base of the spermatheca. These genital and reproductive

The ecologic influence of in-stream large wood (LW) was evaluated at reach scale in a third-order channel located in the Coastal
Mountain Range, southern Chile. The tested hypotheses were that Coarse Particle Organic Matter (CPOM) retention is higher and
benthic macro-invertebrates are more diverse in channel reaches storing higher volumes of LW. Three LW-low-volume reaches
(mean LW volume of 8 m³ 100m-1 of reach channel length; plane bed morphology) and three LW-high-volume reaches (mean
volume 262 m³ 100m-1; forced pool riffle bed morphology) were selected within a 1557 m-long segment of the study channel.
CPOM retention was inferred from the difference between the number of leaves collected in the downstream end of each reach
and the leaves introduced...

Fatty acid methyl esters extracted from the cuticular surface of Artemia franciscana (Kellogs, 1906)
(Crustacea: Anostraca) increase the swim speed of conspecific males
Provedor de dados: 72
Autores: Tapia,Carola; Parra,Leonardo; Mutis,Ana; Gajardo,Gonzalo; Quiroz,Andrés.
ABSTRACT Previous researches have established that the swim speed of some microcrustaceans is influenced by chemical
compounds emitted by conspecifics. We examined the hypothesis that cuticular compounds present on the body surface of A.
franciscana, the most widespread member of Artemia genus, play a role in the swim speed of conspecific males. The movements
(swim) of one male confronted to a sponge soaked with female or male cuticular extract, were recorded during 30 minutes and the
swim speed was determined using a behavioral tracking software (Ethovision 3.1, Noldus Technologies). As a control, the
movements of one male confronted to a sponge soaked with salty water or with a mixture of the solvents used in the extraction
(chloroform-methanol), was...

Downward fluxes of particulate organic matter in coastal and oceanic areas off Chile: The role of the
OMZ and functional groups of the plankton
Provedor de dados: 72
Autores: González,H E; Daneri,G; Menschel,E; Marchant,M; Pantoja,S; Hebbeln,D; Barria,C; Vera,R; Iriarte,J.
Vertical fluxes of particles have been estimated during the last decade in coastal and oceanic systems off central-southern Chile.
Free-drifting, cylindrical sediment traps have been deployed below the mixing layer from coastal areas, while automatic, cone-
shaped sediment traps have been anchored in deep oceanic areas. Vertical fluxes toward 2300 m depth off Coquimbo were
dominated by calcium carbonate (~70 mg m-2 d-1) instead of particulate organic carbon (POC ~7 mg m-2 d-1), where
foraminifers (Neogloboquadrina pachyderma) and faecal pellets of Euphausia mucronata and Oikopleura spp, played important
roles as vehicles for carbonate and carbon, respectively. In coastal upwelling systems, (i. e. Concepción), the dominant vertical
flux was POC, mainly...

This study examines the limnology and ecology of two high altitude wetlands, Lirima (19°51’24 S;
68°55’02 W; 4000 m asl) and Caya (20°37’21 S; 68°58’28 W; 3700 m asl), located in the
Chilean Altiplano. Both wetlands are formed by the evaporitic remnant basins of paleolakes which occupied an extensive area of
what today is known as the Altiplano. These systems have a negative hydrological balance, receiving their water from
groundwater, snow melt and limited seasonal rains. An ongoing negative water balance and the sediment characteristics in the
region have accelerated the salinization process in these systems, as shown by their present physicochemical characteristics.
Nutrient values were typical of mesotrophic to...

Here we provide the first analysis of activity patterns exhibited by spotted and melanistic colour morphs of the vulnerable guiña
Leopardus guigna, in a forest landscape of southern Chile. Camera traps showed guiñas were mainly active at night (64% of
photos). Melanistic guiñas were more nocturnal (82% of photos) than the more common spotted cats (57%). Spotted guiñas were
more active on cloudy and moonless nights. Our study provides novel findings about the behavioural plasticity of guiña in
different ambient conditions, and the relative advantage to each colour morph to persist in an increasingly human-dominated
landscape.

The Perú-Chile undercurrent and the oxigen minimum zone variability off central Chile
Provedor de dados: 72
Autores: Hormazábal,Samuel; Shaffer,Gary; Silva,Nelson; Navarro,Eduardo.
Ten years of continuous current meter recordings near the core of the Peru-Chile Undercurrent (PCU) over the continental slope at
30°S off Chile, local and equatorial wind stress data, and monthly oceanographic sections off Valparaíso (33°S) are used to study
the variability of the PCU and the Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ) off Chile. The physics that governs the PCU variability differs
for intraseasonal periods and for longer periods: Coastal trapped waves dominate the intraseasonal band whereas Rossby waves
dominate for periods greater than about 120 days. Semiannual and annual period fluctuations can largely be explained by Rossby
waves forced by equatorial Kelvin waves and local winds. Seasonal variations in the PCU are strongly modulated over El

Over the last years there has been new and valuable information in both wild chinchillas, however this is still insufficient for
effective protection. In this paper we review some fundamental aspects of its natural history, synthesizing and delivering new
information about their ecology, taxonomy and conservation status, based on the review of available literature, and field data
collection. In relation to their ecology we have been identified new colonies of both species, for scientific research as well as
environmental technical reports. For most of these colonies we identified vegetation to which they are associated, predators and
other sympatric rodent species. The taxonomy of these species is controversial. A proposal was submitted to ICZN in 2003,...

SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL VARIABILITY OF THERMAL FRONTS OFF CENTRAL CHILE (33-

Provedor de dados: 72
Autores: Letelier,J.; Pizarro,O.; Núñez,S.; Arcos,D.
During the upwelling season along the coast off central Chile (33-40S), cold upwelled water can be easily distinguished from
warm oceanic water using satellite infrared images. The boundary between cold and warm surface waters is a relatively narrow
region with large horizontal gradients, denominated upwelling front, which is also clearly visible in satellite images. Here, using
daily NOAA satellite infrared images from the period 1998-2000, we described the spatial distribution of mesoscale features
related to upwelling fronts. Together with infrared data, we use SeaWiFS's color images to explore the relationship between
Chlorophyll concentration and thermal upwelling fronts. Our results show that thermal fronts have maximum intensities
(0.2C/km) in...

Two behavioral experiments were performed to test that A. franciscana shows specific courtship patterns, which in part, would be
governed by semiochemicals released by females. The courtship ethogram, based on 30 adult virgin pairs (1 female v/s 1 male)
individually video recorded for 1 hour, revealed that males display four independent activity patterns: 1) approach and touch, 2)
swim behind, 3) riding attempt, and 4) riding success. The analysis of the transitions among the observed patterns suggested two
ways to achieve riding success, both requiring female touch. In one, males approach and touch females followed by riding attempt
(27% probability of occurrence), but if the latter fails, males start over from approach and touch (23% probability of...

The biogeochemistry of the suboxic and anoxic zones in the cariaco basin
Provedor de dados: 72
Autores: Scranton,Mary I; Astor,Yrene; Percy,Dane; Xiaona,Li; Xueju,Lin; Taylor,Gordon T.
A decade-long study of the Cariaco Basin has demonstrated that the suboxic interface in this system is temporally and spatially
variable and that it is the home for a diverse and active microbial community. The thickness and structure of the suboxic zone
appears to be primarily controlled by the physics of the basin, with oxygen containing intrusions occurring from both eastern and
western sills. The microbial populations, which include both heterotrophic and chemoautotrophic micro-organisms, are actively
growing at rates which cannot be supported by vertical transport of oxidants or reductants. Our studies suggest that the microbial
loop depends on cycling of intermediate oxidation state sulfur species (sulfite, thiosulfate and elemental S) possibly...

Oxygen deficiency and benthic communities in the peruvian upper continental margin
Provedor de dados: 72
Autores: Gutiérrez,Dimitri; Quipúzcoa,Luis; Enríquez,Edgardo.
The oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) off the Peruvian coast, though shallower and more intense than other OMZs, exhibits a spatial
distribution that varies with latitude, depth and distance to the coast. The spatial variability in oxygen content imposes latitudinal
and bathymetric zonations of the benthic communities. Nevertheless the spatial patterns of the benthic communities are also
modulated by the bottom topography and the sedimentary environments, which in turn are controlled to a large extent by the
poleward undercurrent. While the bathymetric patterns of the macro- and meiobenthos have been previously described, latitudinal
changes have received less attention. We found that, in parallel with opposed latitudinal gradients of oxygen and fresh organic...

The presence of Alsodespehuenche in Chile was reported in the year 2010, based on the observation of larvae near the Chilean-
Argentinean border, about 3 km east of the northeast corner of the Laguna del Maule (Región del Maule, Chile). The taxonomic
history of this species dates from 1965, with the re-discovery of Telmatobius montanus (which was later transferred to the genus
Alsodes) in two localities, near the Laguna del Maule and Valle Pehuenche, located in Chile and Argentina, respectively. The
literature review shows that the locality of Argentina described in 1965 became the type locality of A. pehuenche, while the
Chilean locality was ignored; thus this latter locality continues to be a valid record for A. montanus. In this study we provide...

We described and compared the diets of two sympatric Andean camelids, during the humid season (austral summer) in a site of
Northern Chile, in presence of domestic livestock. Results indicate that: 1) grasses and shrubs are the main component in the diet
of both camelids, 2) shrubs were more consumed by V. vicugna; 3) V. vicugna and L. guanicoe used the same trophic resources
but in different proportions; 4) in mountain environments, wetlands exploitation by wild camelids seems restricted by domestic
cattle, which would cause the displacement of Vicuñas and Guanacos to suboptimal habitat for feeding.

Autores: Kostianoy,A.G.; Lebedev,S.A.; Litovchenko,K.Ts.; Stanichny,S.V.; Pichuzhkina,O.E.
Shipping activities in the Baltic Sea, including oil transport and oil handled in harbors, have a number of negative impacts on the
marine environment and coastal zone. Oil discharges from ships represent a significant threat to marine ecosystems. Oil spills
cause the contamination of seawater, shores, and beaches, which may persist for several months and represent a threat to marine
resources. One of the main tasks in the ecological monitoring of the Baltic Sea is an operational satellite and aerial detection of oil
spillages, determination of their characteristics, establishment of the pollution sources and forecast of probable trajectories of the
oil spill transport. Since 1993 there is no regular aerial surveillance of the oil spills in the Russian...

The principles of remotely sensing sea surface salinity are briefly reviewed. The airborne instrument used for this study is a
Scanning Low Frequency Microwave Radiometer (SLFMR). It has spatial resolution of typically 500m (depending on the altitude
of the aircraft) and a salinity resolution of about 1 psu. This configuration is suitable for studying the dynamics of river plumes as
they form on the continental shelf. The Burdekin River is one of Australia's major rivers with about 2.4% of the annual runoff
from the continent. This river is in the dry tropics and has severe transient peaks which last for days to weeks during the summer
monsoon season. The case study shows the river plume during growth and decay phases and is supported with in situ vertical...

For more than ten years, the CARIACO Time-Series Program has studied seasonal patterns and interannual variability at the
Cariaco Basin. Monthly core physical and biogeochemical observations have been collected since November 1995 at the
CARIACO Time-Series station (10º 30' N, 64º 40' W). A region with suboxic conditions (oxygen and sulfide concentrations <1
µM) is found at intermediate waters at the station. The characteristics of this region show time and space variability, depending on
the dynamics of the water. In general, ammonium, nitrate and nitrite disappeared within the suboxic region, although there is a
steep ammonium concentration increase with depth after the oxic-anoxic interface suggesting its consumption at this boundary.

Infrared and microwave SST retrievals are highly complementary but are found to have significant differences that must be
addressed if the products are to be combined. Individual products are evaluated using buoy observations to identify any
dependence of the retrieval uncertainty on atmospheric forcing. The infrared products are seen to be affected by aerosols, water
vapor, and SST while the microwave product is affected by atmospheric stability, wind speed, SST, and water vapor. Applying
bias adjustments based on these results reduces the differences between the products

Autores: Galleguillos,Ricardo; Canales-Aguirre,Cristian B; Ferrada,Sandra.
Nine novel microsatellite loci were developed for Trachurus murphyi. These loci were characterized in samples from three sites
along the eastern South Pacific Ocean. One of the loci was monomorphic, whereas the rest of the loci had between six and 19
alleles per locus and showed the expected heterozygosity ranging from 0.653 to 0.933. These loci do not show genetic
differentiation among the analyzed sites.

As an overview provided to the South American Workshop on Marine Biodiversity, this article presents the unique collaborative
approach of the Census of Marine Life (CoML) to increasing our knowledge of the abundance, distribution and diversity of
marine life throughout the world's oceans. Five elements comprise the foundation of the research program, providing information
and methods useful for enhancing our understanding of marine biodiversity, both historically and today, and making sound
predictions of biological diversity in the future. (1) A series of initial field projects will demonstrate techniques or technologies to
be applied to future studies. Some of these will test new technologies in well-known areas of the ocean, but most will take place

A review of the chemistries of redox sensitive elements within suboxic zones of oxygen minimun
regions
Provedor de dados: 72
Autores: Kenneth W,Bruland.
This presentation is a review of the chemistries of redox sensitive elements within suboxic regions of extreme oxygen minimum
zones. Suboxic regions are defined as extreme oxygen minimum zones with dissolved oxygen < 10 µmol kg-1 (and likely <5
µmol kg-1), and with clear evidence of nitrate reduction, but not sulfate reduction. These are regions with nitrate deficits > 10
µmol kg-1 or N* values of _10 µmol kg-1. Suboxic regions predictably occur in the tropical and subtropical eastern Pacific and
the Arabian Sea. These suboxic zones are important in the global biogeochemistry of nitrogen and act as an important sink for
fixed nitrogen. Minor and trace element redox couples such as iodate/iodide and leachable particulate Mn/dissolved Mn undergo...

Global warming projection of the change in dissolved oxygen concentrations in low oxygen regions of
the oceans
Provedor de dados: 72
Autores: Matear,Richard.
Global warming projections using a range of climate models included in the IPCC 4th assessment report (AR4) suggest the oceans
will warm, the stratification of the upper ocean will increase and the ventilation of the ocean interior will change. These physical
changes will impact dissolved oxygen levels in the ocean. Using a global warming projection from the CSIRO (Australian
Commonwealth Scientific and Research Administration) climate model linked to a simple ocean biogeochemical model I
investigated how dissolved oxygen levels in the ocean interior change under global warming. The climate simulations project the
low oxygen regions like the eastern equatorial Pacific will expand. By the end of the century it is projected that the volume of
hypoxic water...

Autores: Schneider,Wolfgang; Fuenzalida,Rosalino; Garcés-Vargas,José; Bravo,Luis; Lange,Carina.
Recent high-resolution hydrographic measurements (1976-2001) from the eastern South Pacific (ESP) were employed combined
with high-resolution data from the World Ocean Circulation Experiment to evaluate the vertical and horizontal extension of the
OMZ (oxygen minimum zone, < 20 µmol kg-1) there. Of the six permanent hypoxic regions in the world oceans, the ESP OMZ
is volumetrically the fourth largest, occupying 2.74 x 10(6) km³ and accounting for ~11% globally. Examples of variability in the
vertical position of the OMZ in the water-column and also in its intensity offshore central Chile will be addressed. We conclude
that the OMZ in the ESP is partly based on old, low-oxygen waters from intermediate depths of the North Pacific Ocean, which

The Natural Geography in Shore Areas (NaGISA, the Japanese word for beach) project is the nearshore component of the Census
of Marine Life program. NaGISA targets nearshore marine biodiversity in large macrophyte communities (hard bottom
macroalgal communities and soft sediment sea grass beds) in a depth zonation from high intertidal to 15 m water depth. The
overall goal of NaGISA is to quantify nearshore biodiversity on a global scale by conducting a longitudinal and latitudinal
gradient. Outreach to the public, involvement of local communities in the sampling, and education are important components of
the NaGISA program.

The mat forming bacteria covering organic matter-enriched and anoxic marine sediments underlying a salmon farm in Southern
Chile, were examined using 16S rRNA gene phylogenies. This mat was absent in the sea bed outside the direct influence of the
farm (360 m outside fish cages). Based on nearly complete 16S rRNA gene sequences (-1500 bp), mat-forming filamentous cells
were settled as the sulphur-oxidizing and putatively dissimilative nitrate-reducing Beggiatoa spp., being closely related (up to 97%
sequence identity) to Beggiatoa spp. identified in eutrophic shallow sediments in northern Europe (Danish Limfjorden and
German Dangast inlets). Their phylogenetic affiliation was consistent with their morphology as vacuolated and sulphur-containing
cells...

Silver Foxes
Provedor de dados: 72
Autores: Bidau,Claudio J.
The problem of the origin of domestic animals and plants, and the means by which they were produced along human history, were
of deep interest to Charles Darwin who considered domestic breeding one grand experiment in evolution. In frst place, he
elaborated an analogy between artifcial selection, by which breeders obtained desired characters in domestic species, and natural
selection, the powerful force driving evolution in nature. At the same time, Darwin distinguished two processes within artifcial
selection: methodical and unconscious selection. He attached great importance to the latter since it could produce gradual
unexpected changes in association with those characters that were consciously selected for. Although the analogy

The robalo Eleginops maclovinus (Valenciennes 1830) is a common fsh in the littoral, estuaries and rivers (under tidal effects
zone) of southern South América, including the Falkland islands. The feeding habits of this species is known mainly in the two
frst mentioned habitats, where it consumes mostly animals from marine and estuarine origin. However, little is known about its
seasonal feeding habits in limnetic environments. It is only assumed that it has to eat preys from freshwater origin. In the present
study, 127 specimens of E. maclovinus were analysed, 119 of which had stomach contents. The zoophagic tendency of the species
is corroborated, but also animáis from low salinities and limnetic salinities were found to be consumed inthe freshwater...

Weekly NODS/MCSST (the NASA Ocean Data System/Multi-Channel Sea Surface Temperature) dataset was used to investigate
detailed structure and space-time variability of large-scale fronts in the Southern Indian Ocean (30°60°S and 20°150°E) during the
period of 1997-1999. The constructed SST gradient maps for 36 mid-month weeks gave simultaneous viewing of five basic fronts
in the whole basin: the North and South Subtropical fronts, the Agulhas Front, the Subantarctic Front, and the Polar Front. Mean
location, SST and SST gradients with corresponding standard deviations were calculated for every front at each 10°-spaced
longitude. SST gradient maps and charts of sea level anomalies (SLA) based on the combined altimetry data from the

The sediment microorganisms under the oxygen minimum zone: present day analogs of precambrian

A review of the latest findings relating big filamentous sublittoral bacteria of sediments under the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ)
of the eastern Pacific, and, on the basis of associated morphological and environmental factors, an analysis and comparison of
extant and Precambrian similar benthic microorganisms is performed. Based on the similarity between the two communities and
the fact that certain features presented by extant bacterial mats may explain a special type of Precambrian stromatolites, i.e., the
microbialites, we suggest that both extant big filamentous bacteria and their mats may represent analogs of those existing in
Precambrian oceans providing opportunities for research and clues on the evolution of early life in the ocean's shelf sediments...

Charles Darwin, Alfred Russel Wallace, and the Evolution / Creation of the Human Brain And Mind
Provedor de dados: 72
Autores: Glickman,Stephen E.
Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace independently discovered natural selection, and a set of common experiences surely
contributed to that event. But, there were also major differences in their life-experience as collectors and travelers, their socio-
political commitments, and their personal styles. The present paper is focused on, what is, perhaps, the most fundamental area of
disagreement between Darwin and Wallace: the evolution of humanity. Darwin argued that human evolution could be explained
by natural selection, with sexual selection as a signifcant supplementary principle. Wallace always had doubts about sexual
selection, and ultimately concluded that natural selection alone was insuffcient to account for a set of uniquely human...

Historical data from hydrological cruises performed off Peru by Instituto del Mar del Peru (IMARPE) during the years 2000-2004
are described and analysed. Hydrographic conditions commonly encountered are briefly described and contrasted with episodes
displaying intense surface or subsurface salinity anomalies, in relation to calm wind conditions in summer, intense upwelling and
strong mesoscale activity in winter and spring, as evidenced on sea level and wind data. These data suggest a strong variability at
different spatial scales, related to a variety of coastal dynamical processes

ABSTRACT People’s perception on birds of prey is heavily influenced by its intrinsic value, utility, myths and
superstitions. In particular, negative perceptions may encourage poaching and persecution of these birds, affecting their
conservation status. One nocturnal raptor species widely distributed across the world is the Barn Owl (Tyto alba, Tytonidae). In
Chile, this species has been recorded and studied exclusively in rural and sub-urban areas. However, in the city of Valdivia Barn
owls exist within the city boundaries. In this study we documented the feeding habits of Barn owls nesting in urban settings of
Valdivia, and we analyze the opinions of local neighbors toward the owls. To characterize the diet of owls, we collected all

The Atacama region, Chile, presents one of the highest levels of mining exploitation of the country, which leads to high levels of
contamination from mine tailings and other related environmental liabilities. One of the most complex situations occurred in the
Chañaral city, north of Chile, where for over 50 years mine tailings were dumped on the coast, causing severe damage in the
ecosystem. To evaluate the effects on terrestrial biota, we analyzed the concentration of cadmium and lead in tissues of Turkey
Vulture (Cathartes aura). The results indicate that accumulation of cadmium in kidney was 10.31 μg/g (SD 8.00, range
0.27 to 20.73 μg/g) while in the liver was 5.24 μg/g (SD 8.00, range 0.49 to 19.70). There values are very...

Alfred Russel Wallace and the Darwinian Species Concept: His Paper on the Swallowtail Butterflies

Provedor de dados: 72
Autores: Mallet,James.
Soon after his return from the Malay Archipelago, Alfred Russel Wallace published one of his most signifcant papers. The paper
used butterfies of the family Papilionidae as a model system for testing evolutionary hypotheses, and included a revision of the
Papilionidae of the region, as well as the description of some 20 new species. Wallace argued that the Papilionidae were the most
advanced butterfies, against some of his colleagues such as Bates and Trimen who had claimed that the Nymphalidae were more
advanced because of their possession of vestigial forelegs. In a very important section, Wallace laid out what is perhaps the
clearest Darwinist defnition of the differences between species, geographic subspecies, and local varieties. He also discussed...

appears to be chromosomally and geographical intermediate between two previously described "Northern 2n=38-40" and
"Multiple Fission, 2n=40-44 (MF)" races. This race retains the same "Northern" chromosomal features, but differs by being both
polymorphic for an enlarged chromosome pair 6 and for a pericentric inversion in chromosome pair 7; these rearrangements are
present in the "MF" race. At the population cytogenetics level, the mean proportion of polymorphic chromosomes in the
"Northern, mod 1" race is relatively high and intermediate between the Northern" and "MF" races, while the chromosome

ESTIMATION OF THE FRACTION OF CANOPY COVER FROM MULTISPECTRAL DATA TO
BE USED IN A WATER SOIL EROSION PREDICTION MODEL
Provedor de dados: 72
Autores: González Lanteri,David; Huete,Alfredo; Kim,HoJin; Didan,Kamel.
Using the 16 day MODIS (aboard the EOS Terra satellite) 250m NDVI and ground biophysical and spectral measurements we
established simple relationships between these parameters and the canopy cover. The canopy cover is used in water erosion
models to estimate the amount of soil loss under precipitation events and specific geographic conditions. Two transects, in the
grassland part of the Walnut Gulch Experimental Watershed (WGEW) located near the town of Tombstone in Arizona, were
established for ground data collection. Ground measurements were performed every 16 days, to coincide with the Terra Satellite
overpass. Erosion, in desert environment is a contributing factor to soil degradation and subsequently desertification. Erosion is
strongly related with...

ABSTRACT Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with rRNA-targeted oligonucleotide probes was used to investigate the
abundance of prokariotic community from the sediments of different sites and along a temporary-space scale from Salar de
Lagunilla, a high-altitude athalassohaline wetland in the Chilean Altiplano. Six different taxonomic groups were studied: alpha,
beta, gamma proteobacterias, sulfate-reducing of the delta subclass of Proteobacteria, Cytophaga-flavobacteria and the domain
Archaea. The analyses showed the Archaea domain and Cytophaga-flavobacteria group (33.6 % - 20.2 %, respectively) as the
dominant group, whereas the groups with minor abundance corresponded to alpha and Beta-proteobacteria (10.7-15.5 %). The
prokariotic communities in...

The Colombian deep sea shrimp fishery is carried out by vessels with double bottom trawl fishing gear. There is a wide variety in
the catch composition species, in which many of them have a wide distribution depth range. Fifty four fish species of 35 families,
11 crustacean species of 11 families, and one mollusk species were identified. Some holothurians, gastropods, echinoderms and
other mollusks also appeared occasionally. The joint analysis of the current and former studies determined 85 species in the catch
composition of this fishery. The Colombian bottom trawl fishery is actually using the turtle excluder device as the only technical
adaptation of the fishing gear to reduce the bycatch turtles, but seems to exclude other big size commercial bycatch....

In recent years, our group has been studying the microbial communities of the water column associated with the oxygen minimum
zone (OMZ) off northern Chile and Peru, trying to understand who the main players are in the OMZ biogeochemical cycles and
which metabolic strategies they are using. For that, we are combining flow cytometry, molecular techniques and biogeochemical
approaches. Most of our work, so far, has focused on microbes capable of doing oxygenic photosynthesis, such as the
cyanobacteria, and those involved in the nitrogen cycle, such as the denitrifying, nitrifying and anammox bacteria. We have also
started to look at the more general microbial abundance and diversity. In each case, we are finding that the OMZ holds distinct

There is scarce basic biological data on native freshwater fish species from Chile and next to zero on growth, gonad development
and reproduction, which are critical for the purposes of the conservation of their natural populations. Seasonal analysis of sub-
individual (oocyte development) and population (length frequency, growth rates) endpoints in Trichomycterus areolatus and
Percilia gillissi were evaluated from February 2007 to January 2008. Oocyte development has a marked seasonality for P. gillissi,
with mature eggs in October and declining frequency of mature oocytes into January. For T. areolatus we found some mature eggs
in July, with highest number of mature eggs in October, coincident with previous data on maximum gonad size. Both species

Summer food habits of the Patagonian opossum, Lestodelphys halli (Thomas, 1921), in southern arid
Patagonian shrub-steppes
Provedor de dados: 72
Autores: Zapata,Sonia C; Procopio,Diego; Travaini,Alejandro; Rodríguez,Alejandro.
The summer diet of the Patagonian opossum Lestodelphys halli was studied in southern Argentinean Patagonia. Faeces of
opossums captured alive and stomach contents from dead animals were collected and analyzed. A wide variety of invertebrates
(87.2% frequency of occurrence) followed by birds and reptiles (10.64%) occurred both in faeces and stomachs, and fruits were
occasionally consumed. Although the Patagonian opossum was reported as a carnivorous species in captivity, feeding mainly on
rodents, reptiles, birds and invertebrates, we did not find remains of rodents in the diet of the opossums. We suggest that
Patagonian opossums are not an efficient rodent predator in the wild. The high consumption of invertebrates, reptiles, birds and
fruits during the...

The level of specialization of endemic island birds to their native habitats could contribute importantly to increase their extinction
risk. We used abundance obtained from mist-netting and radio telemetry data from one individual to determine the micro-habitat
use pattern of Juan Fernandez Tit-tyrants (Anairetes fernandezianus) within native forest. The tracked male tit-tyrant established
its home range exclusively in core native forest areas. Regression models of abundance and Resource Utilization Functions
showed strong micro-habitat preferences of tit-tyrants. The abundance and utilization probabilities of tit-tyrants declined with
distance to exotic shrub and increased with distance to human created gaps. Natural heterogeneity in micro-habitat...

Marine biodiversity in French Guiana: Estuarine, coastal, and shelf ecosystems under de influence of
Amazonian waters
Provedor de dados: 72
Autores: Artigas,Luis Felipe; Vendeville,Philippe; Leopold,Marc; Guiral,Daniel; Ternon,Jean-François.
Marine biodiversity in French Guiana is strongly influenced by the amagon River waters of the river Amazon, which constitute a
major structuring factor for the estuarine, coastal, and shelf marine ecosystems. Moreover, the marked seasonal and interannual
variabilities play important roles in the stability or fluctuations in the environmental parameters that influence biodiversity at the
ecological, population, and genetic levels. Previous and ongoing studies of the marine and littoral biota relate mostly to
commercial marine species, protected species in danger of extinction and, specially, to the biodiversity and functioning of local
coastal and littoral ecosystems such as estuaries, mudflats, sandy beaches and, particularly, littoral mangroves. A more...
