Summary
It is the authors contention that the cure consists in the favourable rnodifi-
cation of the pathological symptoms, a psychic structuration and the deve-
lopment of the personality.
They discuss Freud's main ideas concerning thc cure and the healing proce-
dures in psychoanalysis.
They quote A. Garma, A. Rascovsky, E. Pichon-Riviere, H. Rackcr, D. Líber-
man, J. Bleger, W. and M. Baranger, J. M. Mom, E. H. Rolla, L. Grinberg,
J. E. García Badaracco in order to facilitate the understanding of the subject.
It is their belief that research and cure not only are not antagonistic but
that each cannot exist without the other, in so far as the intervention of thc
psychoanalyst-researcher modifies the bipersonal field and the patient, in turn,
interacts with the former. They feel that no partial therapeutic or scientific
ideal may replace the object relationship in thc anal ytic situation, a situation
from which the clinical work contributes to the psychoanalytic science and,
in turn, constitutes it.
They present an outline of the healthy 01" mature personality and mention
two directions in which the psychotherapeutic field may be broadened: al the
different life stages and ages, and bl the new nosographic categories and
the severe pictures. They stress the faet that the treatment is a proecss

and that the same may be said of the criteria used to assess its termination.
They describe the training required to become a psychoanalyst, the function
and capacity of the psychoanalyst and the kind of knowledge and "truth" that
is looked for in the healing process. They emphasize the identifications
that contribute to the identity of the psychoanalyst in his specific role.
