Exports that Mexico made to the region of the Free Trade Agreement between
Mexico and the European Union (TLCUEM), which is waiting for a date close to the
signing and entry into force of a new version of this trade pact, fell
six-point seven percent in the first two months of the year.
According to data from the Ministry of the Economy, 3,781 million dollars were
exported for the first two months of this year, according to the latest available
figures.
Germany is the country that demands the highest value of Mexican products from
that region, but this fell by 15.3 percent in the first two months of the year with only
952 million dollars.
Due to the importance of the German nation, the reduction of exports to it
contributed to the total fall of the region, said Rafael García, specialist in
international trade issues at UNAM.
This European country had a low demand for Mexican products because since last
year it had been showing signs of economic weakness, García explained.
And with the actions to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, the time to reach the
recession currently experienced in Germany was accelerated, he added.
Spain is the second most important destination of the TLCUEM to which Mexico
exports its products, and it also sent a decrease of 15.6 percent, for which it only
sent 617 million dollars.
