Desde hace casi una década, el escritor de
ciencia ficción William Gibson viene asegu-
rando que el futuro ya está instalado entre
nosotros, pero no de un modo equitativo.
Para el señalamiento de estas futuridades
dispersas, se vuelve más y más imperioso
intentar relevar los síntomas de ese novísi-
mo mapa, desplazando la idea de que el fu-
turo es aquello que está llegando y pensarlo
como aquello que quizá ya está en nuestros
espacios cotidianos; buscando esos futuros
puntuales en el más inmediato presente.
En la charla central del dossier del
número anterior (¿Volver al futuro?), Mau-
ricio Corbalán nos advertía sobre una cre-
ciente tensión entre el habitar y el producir.
Decía: “El arte, como muchas otras disci-
plinas, ha utilizado la infraestructura que la
tecnología y el capitalismo han producido
últimamente, donde la circulación se acele-
ra, donde el intercambio es cada vez más
masivo. Esto tensiona toda la esfera de la
producción. Cada vez más rápido, cada vez
más distribuido, cada vez con mayor volu-
men. Y, por el otro lado, la experiencia del
habitar, que tiene que ver con la localidad,
con dónde estoy y cómo vivo: ‘los soportes
de vida’... ”. Retomando esta idea, en esta
oportunidad decidimos desatender proviso-
riamente las múltiples alarmas de “un hori-
zonte de catástrofe total” y concentrarnos
en estos otros soportes de vida: de la euforia
biotecnológica a la cada vez más estimulan-
te revisión de un horizonte más allá de las
restricciones del paradigma distópico, del
deslizamiento de las tecnologías de la infor-
mación a las proliferantes tecnologías de la
vida, con las consecuentes mutaciones que
estos repartimientos producen en prácticas,
especulaciones, políticas, géneros e imagi-
narios.
Si en la edición pasada aunamos un
diagnóstico de futuro en una conversación,
en ésta proponemos dos diálogos para pen-
sar esos futuros que ya están aquí, entre
nosotros: una charla del sociólogo Ezequiel
Gatto con Santiago García Navarro, en la
que se mapean espacios en los que la biotec-
nología ya estaría diseñando futuros, cam-
pos en relación con los cuales estaríamos,
quizá, a tiempo de pensar estratégicamente,
y un diálogo triangulado entre la investiga-
dora y militante Julieta Massacese, el artista
performer Osías Yanov y el dramaturgo y
director Silvio Lang en el que nos actualizan
sobre uno de los temas en el que la cuestión
del futuro parece encarnarse de un modo
más icónico y dramático: las políticas de
género, sexualidad y representación.
For almost a decade, science fiction writer
William Gibson has been insisting that the
future is already with us, if not in an equi-
table fashion. To identify these scattered fu-
turities, it is increasingly urgent to try to pin-
point the symptoms of this brand-new map,
displacing the idea that the future is what
is coming in order to envision it instead as
something that may be present in our daily
spaces and to look for those specific futures
in the most immediate present.
In the conversation in the dossier of
the previous issue (Back to the Future?),
Mauricio Corbalán alerts us of a growing
tension between inhabiting and produc-
ing. He says, “Art—like many other disci-
plines—has made use of the infrastructure
that technology and capitalism have pro-
duced recently, infrastructure that speeds
up circulation and renders exchange more
and more mass in scale. That strains the en-
tire sphere of production. Faster and faster,
more and more widely distributed, larger
and larger in volume. And, on the other
hand, the experience of inhabiting, which
is connected to locality, to where I am and
how I live, the ‘life supports.’” Returning
to that idea, we have decided this time to
disregard, temporarily, the multiple alarms
of “a horizon of total catastrophe” to delve
into those other “life supports”: from the
biotechnological euphoria to the more and
more exciting revision of a horizon beyond
the restrictions of the dystopian paradigm,
from the slippage of information technolo-
gies to proliferating life technologies, with
the mutations that those new distributions
produce in practices, speculations, politics,
genders, and imaginaries.
If in the last issue we added a diagnosis of
the future in a conversation, in this one we
propose two dialogues to grapple with those
futures that are already here, in our midst:
a conversation between sociologist Eze-
quiel Gatto and Santiago García Navarro
in which they map spaces where biotech-
nology is already designing futures, inter-
related fields that we may—perhaps—still
have time to envisage strategically; and a tri-
angulated dialogue between researcher and
activist Julieta Masaccese, artist-performer
Osías Yanov, and playwright and director
Silvio Lang that puts us abreast of one of
the issues in which the question of the future
seems to be embodied in a strikingly iconic
and dramatic fashion: gender politics, sexu-
ality, and representation.

¿Por qué la urgencia actual de pensar el futuro? ¿Por qué la
sensación de que se nos está viniendo encima? ¿Es posible
que se haya abandonado durante demasiado tiempo como
problema, o que se venga pensando a partir de figuras de-
masiado estáticas, como el par promesa/catástrofe?
En la charla que mantuvimos con Ezequiel Gatto apa-
rece una tercera posición. Él propone detectar las “futu-
ridades” que, explícita o implícitamente, organizan todos
los discursos y todas las prácticas, para, desde allí, afinar
nuestra capacidad de comprensión y de intervención en
los futuros que se están diseñando actualmente. Desde esta
perspectiva, lo que él propone es ejercer una inteligencia
estratégica capaz de resistir el control de los modos de vida
–que se opera en la organización económica, el diseño de la
alimentación, la modificación genética de los cuerpos– y de
anticiparse en la creación de otros futuros posibles.
Historiador por la Universidad Nacional de Rosario,
doctor en Ciencias Sociales por la Universidad de Buenos
Aires y profesor de Teoría Sociológica en la carrera de His-
toria de la Facultad de Humanidades y Artes de la UNR,
Gatto investiga procesos sociales y culturales –dedicó su
doctorado a pensar el movimiento negro en Estados Uni-
dos y su expresión en las freedom songs, el soul y el funk
entre mediados de los cincuenta y fines de los setenta–, y la
cuestión de las futuridades y los regímenes de historicidad,
siempre tomando en cuenta las subjetividades políticas
involucradas, a las que entiende como “multiplicidades
heterogéneas y productivas”.
En el libro de inminente aparición 19. Una cartogra-
fía narrativa de Santa Fe, Gatto describe, entre la crónica
y el ensayo, su visita a la localidad santafecina de Las Pa-
rejas, donde se prepara uno de los proyectos de agroin-
dustria más avanzados y complejos del país. Es a partir
de esa experiencia y de las preguntas con las que volvió a
Rosario, donde vive, que empezamos la entrevista.
¿Es la del campo biotecnológico una de las imágenes de
futuro más dominantes hoy?
Creo que es una de las imágenes más fuertes. Es también
fruto de una certeza y de un diagnóstico, que dice que
la biotecnología ha atravesado la última década con un
grado de desarrollo, complejización y creatividad que po-
cos sectores de la producción y la innovación científica
han tenido. Hay una euforia biotecnológica que ve en la
producción rural un vasto campo de experimentación y
producción científica.
Es un campo con una posibilidad tal de manipular
condiciones que se ha vuelto muy seductor. Le ofrece a
aquellos que ingresan (al menos en el discurso, porque des-
pués las prácticas son otras), una especie de imagen de ma-
nipulabilidad total de las condiciones de la vida. Ésa es su
Tierra Prometida. Es algo que hace ya años que la bioética
puso en discusión, los riesgos de esta sustitución del bíos
por el científico, pero que no evita que esa manipulación,
inédita, haga que en el campo estén dándose transforma-
ciones muy profundas, que condicionan nuestras formas
de vida, de alimentación, de relación, de distribución de
las riquezas sociales, etcétera.
¿Va a ser el sector dominante en la economía del futuro?
Creo que ya está empezando a serlo. En “Our Biotech Fu-
ture” (2007), Freeman Dyson hace un diagnóstico intere-
sante. Plantea un pasaje del siglo XX, como siglo de las
comunicaciones y la digitalización, de las grandes compu-
tadoras que ocupaban grandes superficies, quizá edificios,

versation with Ezequiel Gatto. He proposes detecting the
Feria Expoagro/
Expoagro Fair “futurities” that, explicitly or implicitly, organize all dis-
courses and all practices in order to, on that basis, hone
our ability to grasp and to act on futures that are being
designed today. From that perspective, what he proposes
is exercising a strategic intelligence capable of resisting the
control of modes of life operative in economic organiza-
tion, in the design of nutrition, and in the genetic modi-
fications of bodies, and engaging in the creation of other
possible futures.
Gatto holds a degree in history from the Universidad
Nacional de Rosario and a doctorate in social science from
the Universidad de Buenos Aires. He is a professor of so-
ciological theory in the History Department of the School
of Humanities and Arts at the Universidad Nacional de
Rosario. Gatto’s area of research is social and cultural
processes—his dissertation was on the black movement
in the United States and its expression in freedom songs,
and soul and funk music from the mid-fifties through the
late seventies—and the question of futurities and regimes
of historicity bearing in mind the political subjectivities
involved, which he understands as “heterogeneous and
productive multiplicities.”
His forthcoming book 19. Una cartografía de Santa
Fe [19. A Cartography of Santa Fe] partakes of the chron-
icle and the essay to describe his visit to the town of Las
Parejas in the province of Santa Fe—site of one of the
most advanced and complex agro-industrial projects in
the country. That experience and the questions with which
he returned to Rosario, where he lives, were the point of
departure for this interview.
Is the biotechnological field one of the most dominant im-
ages of the future today?
I think it’s one of the most powerful images—product of
a certainty and of a diagnosis that hold that, in the last
decade, biotechnology has undergone a degree of devel-
opment and creativity, and grown more complex, in a
manner rivaled by few sectors of scientific production and
innovation. There is a sort of biotechnological euphoria
that sees rural production as a vast field of scientific ex-
perimentation and production.
The possibility of manipulating conditions in that field
is so great that it has become very alluring. Those who work
in that sector are offered—at least on the discursive level,
because the practices are something else again—an image
of total manipulability of the conditions of life. That is their
Promised Land. For years, bioethics has pointed out and
contested the risks that that substitution of “bios” for the
scientific brings. But that does not mean that this unprec-
edented manipulation is not enabling very profound trans-
formations to take place in the countryside, transformations
that condition how we live and nourish ourselves, how we
relate to one another, how social wealth is distributed, etc.
Will it be the dominant sector in the economy of the future?
I think that’s already on its way to happening. In “Our Bio-
tech Future” (2007), Freeman Dyson offers an interesting
diagnosis. He speaks of the passage from the twentieth

cula que, en un futuro no lejano, ese pasaje puede tener
un equivalente en las tecnologías de la vida. Él lo dice en
términos festivos, casi redentores. Yo lo veo como algo
riesgoso de lo que hay que tomar nota: el solapamiento
de las tecnologías de la información y de la comunicación
con las tecnologías de la vida, un matrimonio todavía más
estrecho que el actual entre todos esos elementos. Al menos
lo que yo detecto, entre las cosas que vengo rastreando,
es ese encuentro entre tecnología y vida como espacio de
intervención científica y económica por excelencia.
Gustavo Grobocopatel[1] –la frase es muy tremenda–
habla de una “economía de la fotosíntesis”. O sea, de una
optimización total de la energía solar y de la energía verde
mediante la homologación de las lógicas de la producción
a las lógicas de la vida en un sentido genético, molecular.
Con esto ya no estamos hablando de vidas en el senti-
do humanista, ni siquiera en el sentido foucaultiano de bio-
política. Estamos viviendo una nueva fase de una tenden-
cia que tiene que ver con el control molecular de la vida.
Por lo tanto, se estrechan esos procedimientos para que no
sólo la vida sea puesta a trabajar –como decía Virno– sino
que además se estructure un trabajo sobre la vida. Es el
pasaje del a posteriori al a priori. Buena parte de la biotec-
nología está yendo hacia ahí. Y me parece que ahí hay algo
por cuestionar y por disputar, aunque no necesariamente
en términos de ludismo genético, pero sí con más fuerza de
lo que se viene haciendo, porque los imaginarios de futuro
del capitalismo pasan en buena medida por esas zonas.
Las concepciones altamente optimistas de los nuevos bio-
tecnólogos parecen ir en paralelo a los discursos catastro-
fistas, que también están vinculados, aunque inversamen-
te, con la ultraexplotación de lo verde. ¿Qué relación hay
entre ambos?
Yo creo que en un punto hay un combate, no ya entre apo-
calípticos e integrados, sino entre apocalípticos y biotec-
nólogos. Lo risible es que, muchas veces, la ciencia innova
como consecuencia de los desastres que ella misma va oca-
sionando. Por ejemplo, la investigación de las estructuras
de ciertas plantas que, en condiciones de alta sequía, “re-
sucitan” con muy poca agua es un modo de contrarrestar
efectos climáticos que el propio desarrollo ha producido.
Hay una tendencia del discurso empresarial a hacer
hincapié en cierta sustentabilidad y en estrategias que ga-
ranticen la renovación futura de los recursos. En buena
medida eso es una declaración, más que de intenciones, de
protección de ciertos intereses. Si uno hace un mapa de los
agronegocios o del extractivismo minero en la Argentina,
va a encontrar muchas menciones a la preocupación por
el medio ambiente, la explotación sustentable, etc. Pero
claramente el compromiso no es equivalente al que tienen
estas empresas con la búsqueda de la máxima ganancia.
Las organizaciones ambientalistas y las que vienen hace
años disputando con el modelo de la soja, del glifosato,
del extractivismo, etcétera, plantean cuestiones en relación
con la vida y su cuidado en las que están absolutamente en
lo cierto. Mientras tanto, en las grandes empresas se insiste
en que no hay daños, o bien en que hay soluciones que
se están llevando adelante. En términos de futuridad, el
discurso empresarial tiene siempre el gesto de prometer so-
luciones más o menos cercanas en el tiempo de aquello que
hoy día es un desastre. No concibe una ética del detenerse.

century as the century of communications and digitaliza-
tion, of large computers that occupied vast surfaces—per-
haps even buildings—to the twenty-first century, which
has witnessed the personalization of computers and,
therefore, the individualization of access to and exchange
of information. Dyson speculates that, in a not so distant
future, there might be an analogous passage in life technol-
ogies. He speaks of it in festive, almost redemptive, terms. I
see it as something dangerous that must be duly noted: the
overlap of information and communication technologies
and of life technologies—an even tighter coupling of the
two. As far as I can tell, of the things I have been following,
that meeting of technology and life is the space of scientific
and economic intervention par excellence.
In a frightful phra-se, Gustavo Grobocopatel[1] speaks
of an “economy of photosynthesis,” that is, of a total op-
timization of solar energy and of green energy by means
of the seamless pairing of the logics of production and the
logics of life in a genetic, molecular sense.
That means we are no longer speaking of lives in
the humanist sense, or even in the Foucauldian sense of
biopolitics. We are living in a new phase of a tendency
that has to do with molecular control of life. And that
means that those procedures get narrower and narrower:
not only is life set to work—as Virno said—but a work on
life is structured. This is the passage from a posteriori to
a priori. That is the gist of a lot of biotechnology. And I
think there is something in that that must be questioned
and contested—though not necessarily in genetic Luddite
terms—with more conviction than has been the case thus
far, because, to a large extent, these zones play a part in
capitalism’s future imaginaries.
The highly optimistic conceptions of the new bioengineers
seem to run parallel to catastrophic discourses, which are
also tied, albeit inversely, to the ultra-exploitation of na-
ture. Is there a relationship between the two?
I think the point of contention is no longer between those
with apocalyptic visions and conformists, but rather be-
tween the former and bioengineers. The funny thing is
that science often innovates as a result of the disasters
that it has produced. For example, research into the
structures of certain plants that can “come back to life”
with very little water in conditions of extreme drought is
a way to offset the effects of climate change brought on
by development.
There is a tendency in business discourse to place em-
phasis on a certain sustainability and on strategies that
ensure the future renovation of resources—a discourse
geared, largely, to protecting certain interests rather
than to furthering certain intentions. If you make a
map of agro-business and mining in Argentina, you’ll
find frequent mention of concern for the environment,
sustainable exploitation, etc. But business commitment
to those issues is clearly not as great as its commitment
to maximizing profit. Environmentalist organizations
and others that have been disputing the soy, glyphosate,
mining, and related models for years formulate ques-
tions about life and its care that are right on target.
Meanwhile, large companies insist that there is no dam-
age or—if there is—they are enacting solutions. In terms
of futurity, the business discourse always goes through
the motions of promising solutions in the more or less
short term to what is, in the here and now, disastrous. It
cannot conceive of an ethics of simply stopping.

Por otro lado, me parece que hay una legitimidad y una
consistencia en el discurso apocalíptico, que tiene que ver
con la manipulación de las condiciones de la vida de la
que hablábamos. Esto me hace pensar en la Guerra Fría y
la cuestión nuclear, en esa idea de que la especie humana
es la primera especie que pudo generar artificialmente
las condiciones de su propia desaparición. Esta nueva
dimensión biotecnológica tiene una cara absolutamente
riesgosa, porque implica entrar en un terreno del cual
no se sabe nada. Barbara Adams, una pensadora de la
escuela de estudios del futuro de Cardiff, en Gales, dice
que ninguna generación hasta ahora sabe qué puede lle-
gar a pasar tras treinta años de manipulación genética,
básicamente porque ninguna generación humana atra-
vesó esta experiencia. Por lo tanto, hay un nivel muy
grande de imponderables. Los ambientalistas dan señales
de alarma respecto de que las condiciones de vida pueden
volverse imposibles.
Ése sería el punto de vista de la crítica y el intento por con-
servar lo que está a punto de perderse por efecto del avance
de lógicas destructivas. Pero me llama la atención que en
el campo empresarial haya discursos tan optimistas. Un
optimismo que aparece casi alegorizado en la figura del
emprendedor.
Mi impresión es que el emprendedor le hace al tiempo lo
que el pionero (en el sentido de pioneer) le hizo al espacio.
El pionero es una figura que tiene por delante lo descono-
cido, que aparece a la vez como riesgo y como potencia,
como una apuesta muy grande cuya recompensa también
puede ser muy grande. La idea del emprendedor tiene
algo de la capacidad de reconocer en las temporalidades
sociales actuales un grado de riesgo, de variabilidad, de
incertidumbre, de multiplicidad de actores coincidiendo
en simultáneo, que lo vuelven una especie de pionero tem-
poral. El pionero, además, necesita crear sus propias con-
diciones de existencia y de éxito. El pionero va a un lugar
donde a priori básicamente no se puede apoyar en nada.
Tiene que resolver, tiene que crear, inventar. Y creo que el
emprendedorismo es un modo empresarial contemporá-
neo cuyo éxito simbólico, y también real, es asumir que el
capitalismo tiene un grado de incertidumbre tal que, para
sobrevivir en él, es preciso inventar todo el tiempo. Enton-
ces se mezclan el riesgo, la incertidumbre y el imperativo
de la innovación. El problema es que el emprendedorismo
sigue siendo una forma de la búsqueda de la ganancia bajo
nuevas condiciones. Sigue siendo una cinta interna a la
economía capitalista, y en ese punto, limita el azar a la
dimensión económica del azar.
En el sentido que aquí le estamos dando, emprende-
dor es alguien que busca leer las tendencias para antici-
parse a ellas, e intentar tener éxito en términos comercia-
les, empresariales o financieros. Tiene algo de estratega.
El pionero se moviliza porque espera algo del territorio
todavía no conquistado: oro, tierras, ganado, soberanía.
Eso es lo que hace que un pionero sea un pionero y no
un fugitivo, un solitario: el componente de la promesa.
Si uno ve lo que sucede con las startups, las empresas que
tienen una propuesta y salen a la búsqueda de inversiones,
o las incubadoras de proyectos a lo Google Labs, o incluso
muchas de las charlas de TED –el sitio de divulgación y
educación–, lo que va encontrar es gente haciendo pro-
yectos, buscando usufructuar una tendencia o anticiparse
a algo que pueda tener lugar en un futuro por lo gene-
ral muy ligado a la cuestión tecnológica. Ahí es donde el

sistency in the apocalyptic discourse that has to do with
the manipulation of the life conditions of which we were
speaking. It makes me think of the Cold War and the nu-
clear question, of the idea that the human species is the
first one that could generate artificially the conditions of its
own disappearance. There is an extremely dangerous facet
to this new biotechnological dimension, because it entails
venturing into a terrain about which absolutely nothing is
known. Barbara Adams, a thinker at the school of future
studies at Cardiff in Wales, says that no previous genera-
tion has any idea what might happen after thirty years of
genetic manipulation, basically because no other genera-
tion has had that experience. That means that the number
of imponderables is very large. Environmentalists show
signs of alarm that the conditions that enable life might
become untenable.
That would be the perspective of criticism and of the at-
tempt to preserve what is on the verge of being lost due to
the advance of destructive logics. But I am struck that there
are such optimistic discourses coming out of the business
realm. An optimism that seems to find its allegory in the
figure of the entrepreneur.
I have the impression that the entrepreneur does with time
what the pioneer did with space. The figure of the pioneer
has before him the unknown, which takes the form of risk
and of potential, like a very large wager that could yield a
very large payoff. The idea of the entrepreneur contains,
among other things, the ability to recognize in these so-
cial times a degree of risk, of variability, of uncertainty, of
multiple actors coinciding, that makes him a sort of time
pioneer. The pioneer must create the conditions of his own
existence and success. He goes somewhere where, basi-
cally, you can’t rely a priori on anything at all. He has to
work everything out, to create, to invent. And I think that
entrepreneurship is a contemporary business modality
whose symbolic—but also real—success lies in accepting
that capitalism has such a degree of uncertainty that, to
survive in it, you have to invent everything all the time. So
risk, uncertainty, and the imperative to innovate are mixed
together. The problem is that entrepreneurship is still a
way of seeking profit under new conditions. It is still an
inner gear of the capitalist economy and, as such, it limits
chance to its economic dimension.
As we are using the word, the entrepreneur is some-
one who attempts to read tendencies in order to jump
ahead of them, who pursues commercial, business, finan-
cial success. There is some sort of strategy. The pioneer
takes action because he wants something from that still
unconquered territory: gold, land, cattle, sovereignty. That
component of promise is what separates the pioneer from
the fugitive, the loner. If you take a look at what is hap-
pening with the startups—companies that have an idea
and go out to look for investments—or the project incu-
bators at Google Labs, or even a lot of TED talks—the
website for outreach and education—what you’ll see is
people doing projects, attempting to benefit from a trend
or to anticipate something usually linked to technology
that might take place in a future. That is where the busi-
nessperson tries to turn into an entrepreneur. It has to do
with a certain instability in the contemporary economy.
But what turns a businessperson into a time pioneer is that
imperative to anticipate the future and greater awareness
of making decisions that will—or will not—produce cer-

Pero lo que convierte a un empresario en un pionero del
tiempo es ese imperativo por la anticipación y una ma-
yor conciencia de estar llevando adelante decisiones que
van a producir –o no– ciertos futuros dentro de un futuro
fuertemente inestable. Esto pasa mucho, sobre todo en
las grandes empresas. Ahora todavía más que en la época
de los planes de inversión o de los planes quinquenales,
que eran muchísimo más rígidos, mastodónticos. Ahora
la cuestión pasa por la creación de incipientes, la creación
de múltiples embriones (una imagen, por lo demás, que
empalma ciencias y vida), para ver cuál de todos puede
desarrollarse. Esta dimensión del imaginario empresarial
del futuro juega un enorme papel performático a nivel
social, y no siempre lo estamos viendo. Sí sabemos que
buscan la máxima ganancia, que se estructuran con una
lógica de competitividad y de explotación, pero sabemos
mucho menos sobre la materialidad fina de esos proyec-
tos, por donde pasan muchas veces líneas gruesas de las
transformaciones sociales.

Sí, en buena medida. Para poder ser eficaz, el emprendedor
tiene que desterritorializarse. Requiere un nivel de plastici-
dad muy alto. Me parece que en el pionero, la dominante
es el espacio y la subordinada es el tiempo, y en el em-
prendedor, al revés. El pionero construye su poder desde
el espacio, el emprendedor lo construye desde el gobierno
del tiempo, y ahí por supuesto que el espacio está, pero
jugando en una apuesta que tiene que ver con el futuro.
¿De qué manera el espacio está subordinado al tiempo en
la figura de emprendedor?

to see which of them is capable of developing. This future
dimension of the business imaginary plays an enormous
performatic role on the social level, and we aren’t always
seeing it. We do know that those projects seek to maxi-
mize profit, that they are structured according to a logic of
competitiveness and of exploitation; we know much less
about the fine points of the materiality of those projects,
even though they are often the crux of far-reaching social
transformation.
So what you’re saying is that the entrepreneur is a figure
who tries to control the conditions in which the future
will develop?
Yes, to a large extent. To be efficacious, the entrepreneur has
to be deterritorialized. He must be highly elastic and flex-
ible. In the case of the pioneer, space takes precedence over
time, whereas with the entrepreneur it’s just the opposite.
The pioneer constructs his power on the basis of space, the
entrepreneur through governance of time. Of course, space
is a factor, but the entrepreneur wagers on the future.
How is space subordinate to time in the figure of the en-
trepreneur?
I think that in the constant search for innovations and
trends, space is always out of synch with time. What is
the countryside when seen from that perspective? It is
no longer just a green surface that reproduces itself time
and again according to ecological variables. Nor is it a
space where we know for certain what to do to ensure its

¿Puede esto tener que ver también con el hecho de que el
espacio ya se está presentando como algo cada vez más
manipulable? En el artículo de Dyson que mencionaste
hace un rato, se sugiere que en los próximos años va a
producirse una suerte de indistinción entre espacios ur-
banos y espacios rurales, porque el espacio rural va a ser
cada vez más un espacio donde puedan operar empresas,
donde la gente pueda volver a vivir, y las ciudades, lugares
donde pueda haber huertas, etc. De ese modo, el espacio
se volvería más neutro, o más rápidamente modificable.
Exacto. Que la lógica de la reproducción replique la lógica
de la vida es llevar a un límite hasta ahora inexplorado la
capacidad de manipular las condiciones. Por lo tanto, se
abren unas posibilidades a futuro y se cierran otras. Y a la
vez, esa propia aceleración hace que los horizontes de fu-

Is that, perhaps, connected to the fact that space is pre-
sented as something more and more manipulatable? The
article by Dyson you mentioned suggests that the coming
years will witness a sort of indistinction between urban
and rural spaces, because rural space will increasingly be
a space where companies operate, where people live once
again, and cities will be spaces with small farms and so
forth. That means that space will become more neutral or
more readily modifiable.
Exactly. The possibility that the logic of reproduction
replicate the logic of life means taking the ability to ma-
nipulate conditions to a previously unexplored limit.
That opens up certain possible futures and closes down
others. At the same time, that very acceleration means
that future horizons change constantly according to that
ability to manipulate. Technical logic has been a logic of
capital since its beginning, even before. But the possibil-
ity of manipulating those conditions on a nanotechno-
logical and molecular level takes it to an unprecedented
and exponential degree. The speed of changes also alters
their quality. The quickened pace of modifications means
that these elements proliferate and are harder to con-
trol, because it implies a multiplicity of variables. I think
that the biotechnology that has exploded in these last ten

ligados al agro es que, de acá a quince o veinte años, la po-
blación mundial se incrementará en un grado tal que será
necesario un volumen de alimentos hasta ahora inédito. La
explosión demográfica en China, donde hace tres o cuatro
meses se habilitó la posibilidad de que las familias tengan
un segundo hijo, es uno de los faros. Creo que estamos
en una realidad nacional tristemente privilegiada para ver
cómo el empresariado piensa la cuestión de la producción
de alimentos y lo que suelen llamar “seguridad alimen-
taria”. Directamente relacionado con esto, ahí también
hay una idea de que el futuro tiene que ser el futuro de un
consumo siempre multiplicado, de mayores volúmenes, de
mayor cantidad por habitante, y eso es parte de lo que hay
que discutir. Hay que ver qué quiere decir demanda, qué es
cultura de la alimentación y qué es cultura del consumo.

world population will increase to such an extent that
an unprecedented amount of food will be needed. The
demographic explosion of China—where just three or
four months ago families were given permission to have a
second child—is a major factor. I think that the Argentine
case is sadly privileged in its ability to see how the busi-
ness sector conceives of the question of the production of
food and what is usually called “food security.” Directly
related to this is the idea that the future has to be a future
of always growing levels of consumerism—greater and
greater amounts per inhabitant—and that is one of the
things that must be questioned. We have to take a look
at what demands means, at what food culture and con-
sumer culture mean. And, of course, businesspeople care
little about that part of the conversation.
In that economistic vision of food production, Argen-
tina would place a very important role in the future,
right?
Yes. I think that is the production map of the current
administration. It is what is usually called the reprima-
rization of the economy that circulates as the aim to be-
come “the world’s supermarket”: biotechnology and the
production of foodstuffs on a global scale.

En esta visión economicista de la producción de alimen-
tos, la Argentina cumpliría un rol muy importante a fu-
turo, ¿no?
Sí, yo creo que ésa es la carta productiva del gobierno
actual. Es lo que suele llamarse reprimarización de la
economía, y que circula como el objetivo de ser “el su-
permercado del mundo”: biotecnología y producción de
alimentos a escala global.
Está esta imagen clásica de que, para ser rico, un país tiene
que poder procesar lo más posible materias primas, y que
un país que sólo produce materias primas está condenado
al “subdesarrollo”. Pero un país que basase su economía
en un campo biotecnologizado, ¿sería punta de lanza de
los nuevos procesos económicos? ¿Determinaría esto nue-
vas ideas de futuro?
Sí, puede haber algo de eso. Creo que también ciertas
apuestas pasan por ahí. En términos de potencia tecnológi-
ca, la imagen que tiene Grobocopatel es la de un país –aun-
que “país” es una categoría que habría que rever, aplicada
a estas cosas–, de unos territorios, digamos, en los cuales
el grado de tecnología aplicada y de intensidades de esa
tecnología es muy alto. El campo dejaría de ser un reservo-
rio premoderno que alimenta la modernidad urbana para
ser un laboratorio de última generación. Pero ese futuro
económico choca de frente con sus consecuencias sociales.
El límite de esa apuesta es que la revolución industrial del
siglo XVIII, a la cual Grobocopatel refiere muy seguido
para trazar un equivalente entre la revolución verde en el
campo argentino y la Inglaterra del siglo XVIII –nosotros
seríamos, en el siglo XXI, lo que Inglaterra fue en el XVIII,
ésa es un poco la idea– requirió de la migración de inmen-

To some extent, but I think that certain bold visions are
at stake in that as well. In terms of technological power,
Grobocopatel has the image of a country—though “coun-
try” is a category that, when applied to these things, must
be reexamined—as some territories, let’s say, where the
degree and intensity of applied technology is very high.
The countryside would cease to be a pre-modern reservoir
that feeds urban modernity to become a state-of-the-art
laboratory. But that economic future collides head-on
with the social consequences it brings. The problem of
that vision is that the industrial revolution of the eigh-
teenth century—to which Grobocopatel makes frequent
reference to draw a parallel between the green revolu-
tion in the Argentine countryside and eighteenth-century
England (Argentina in the twenty-first century would be
England in the eighteenth)—loses sight of the fact that the
industrial revolution required the mass migration of labor
to cities, labor that was—one way or another—absorbed
by that new logic and organization of production that was
the classic factory (metal, coal, textile, etc.). I don’t see how
that could possibly happen in the new logic of the biotech-
nological revolution, because it is joined to another revo-
lution, which is the automatization of processes—there
is nothing truly new in that. What, try as I might, I can’t
see is where human beings end up in this scheme. It’s a
scheme based on high levels of productive efficiency, on

clásica (de metal, carbón, textil, etc.). Yo no creo que eso
pueda pasar bajo ningún punto de vista en esta nueva lógi-
ca de la revolución biotecnológica, porque esta revolución
se empalma con otra, que es la de la automatización de los
procesos. En esto no hay nada absolutamente nuevo. Lo
que yo no termino de ver es adónde van los seres humanos
en este esquema. Un esquema de alta eficiencia producti-
va, de robotización generalizada de las maquinarias, de
necesidad cada vez menor de mano de obra en los terri-
torios ¿cómo puede parecerse a una revolución que forzó
a millones de seres humanos a instalarse en las ciudades?
No lo entiendo, salvo para un grupo muy minúsculo, un
cognitariado con mucha formación y mucha capacidad
de innovación productiva y tecnológica. Eso va a seguir
existiendo, como van a existir las grandes empresas y sus
organizaciones administrativas y sus departamentos de
producción. Y, claro, la apropiación privada de las ganan-
cias. Hay un discurso que dice: “finalmente vamos a poder
satisfacer la demanda de alimentos de millones de seres
humanos”. Pero no queda claro cómo esos seres humanos
van a conseguir los recursos para poder acceder a esos
alimentos. Mientras que la cultura del trabajo siga siendo
el eje vertebrador de la organización de la economía, del
acceso a los recursos para sobrevivir, no veo cómo eso se
pueda resolver. Se produce la paradoja de un modelo que
excluye estructuralmente a millones de la posibilidad de
trabajar, mientras exige el imposible de que el trabajo sea
el mecanismo de inclusión. Ahí aparece toda otra discu-
sión, en torno a los modos y modelos de vida.
¿Existirá en el futuro una cultura del trabajo? ¿Hay gente
que está pensando en un mundo del postrabajo?
En este momento, con el incremento sistemático de las ta-
sas de desempleo y todo lo que está sucediendo alrededor,
es muy delicado discutir en la Argentina la cuestión del
trabajo. Pero ya hace un buen tiempo que se viene discu-
tiendo como eje de acceso a recursos para las mayorías.
Porque la cultura del trabajo trae cada vez más problemas
y limitaciones y menos potencialidades. La lógica del capi-
tal impone a millones el trabajo como única vía de acceso
a los recursos. Sobre esa vía se monta una segunda, la
financiarización de la existencia, la cárcel de la deuda. Ese
endeudamiento es un modo de escapar del trabajo que,
no obstante, en la medida en que no se traduzca en una
desobediencia financiera, es un lazo todavía más apretado
al cuello del propio futuro.
La discusión sobre la renta básica en Europa es un
intento de instalar la pregunta sobre qué derechos tenemos
por el hecho de existir. La otra pregunta es en torno a la
dificultad de desplegar capacidades creativas a nivel social
que no sean mediadas por la lógica de la ganancia y el tra-
bajo. En un mundo deseable, la posibilidad de crear tiene
que ser un derecho humano, y para eso hay que desmontar
la cultura del trabajo, porque el trabajo o bien niega esa
posibilidad, o bien la expropia completamente. Lo que está
en juego son los modos de vida.
El imperativo de innovar para sobrevivir alimenta
esas posibilidades de creación, pero las aliena, las somete
a un principio que no es el de la experiencia, que no es el de
la autoalteración, no es el de la posibilidad de inventar con
otros, sino de inventar negocios. Y me parece que eso está
llegando a un grado crítico. Genera inmensos volúmenes

widespread robotization of machinery, on less and less
need for labor on the ground. How can that possibly re-
semble a revolution that drove millions of human beings
to settle in cities? I don’t get how it works for anyone other
than a tiny group, a highly trained cognitariat fit to bring
about productive and technological innovation. That will
continue to exist, as will large companies with their ad-
ministrative structures and production departments. And,
of course, the private appropriation of profits. One dis-
course says “we will finally be able to meet the food needs
of millions of human beings.” But it’s not clear how those
human beings will get access to the resources it takes to
get access to that food. As long as work culture contin-
ues to be the spinal column that holds up the economy,
that determines access to resources for survival, I don’t see
how that can be worked out. It is the paradox of a model
that structurally excludes millions of people from work or
any hope of working while also demanding that work be
the mechanism of inclusion. But that gives rise to another
whole discussion about modes and models of life.
Will there be, in the future, a work culture? Are there peo-
ple thinking of a post-work world?
At a time when unemployment rates are growing system-
atically and everything that that entails, a debate around
work is very sensitive in Argentina, but for some time now
it has been a topic of debate in terms of access to resources
for majorities. Because work culture brings with it more
and more problems and limitations and fewer and few-
er possibilities. The logic of capital imposes on millions
work as the only means of access to resources. And, on
that basis, is a second means of access, the financialization
of existence, the jail of debt. Indebtedness is a way of get-
ting out of work but, unless it is translated into financial
disobedience, it means a still tighter noose around the neck
of the future.
The debate on the basic income in Europe is an at-
tempt to instill the question of what rights we have by vir-
tue of the fact that we exist. The other question relates to
the difficulty of deploying creative capacities at the social
level that are not mediated by the logic of profit and work.
In a desirable world, the possibility to create would be a
human right, but for that to happen work culture has to be
dismantled, because work either negates that possibility or
exploits it entirely. At stake here are ways of life.
The need to innovate to survive nourishes the possibilities
of creation, but also alienates them, places them at the
service of a principle that is not experience, self-alteration,
or the ability to invent anything other than new businesses.
And I think that is reaching a critical degree of intensity.
It generates vast amounts of frustration, hatred, and re-
sentment, and toxic ways of living on a mass scale. When
I think of a desirable future, I imagine a future in which
we can differentiate ourselves and multiple our potentials
and options, rather than specialize more and more simply
in order to survive. What are the social conditions that
would allow creation to proliferate in settings with as little
domination as possible? That is the question I ask myself
regarding what is desirable for the future.
Is the question of the future becoming pervasive in social
movements and their debates?
With no future (projection, debate, strategy) there is no
horizon, and that is—it seems to me—a prerequisite of
politics. And I think that current debates assume that on
different levels. On the national level, I think that one of

vida nocivos en niveles muy amplios. Si tengo que pensar
un futuro deseable, me imagino un futuro que permita
diferenciarnos y multiplicar nuestras posibilidades y no
hiperespecializarnos con el único objeto de sobrevivir.
¿Cuáles son las condiciones sociales para que prolifere la
creación en entornos con la menor dominación posible?
Es la pregunta que yo me hago en relación con lo deseable
en el futuro.
La pregunta por el futuro, ¿está permeando las discusiones
de los movimientos sociales?
Sin futuro (proyección, discusión, estrategia) no hay hori-
zonte, eso me parece una condición de la política. En ese
sentido, me parece que las actuales discusiones asumen
eso, en varios niveles. A nivel nacional, me parece que una
de las consecuencias que tuvo el cambio de gobierno fue
alterar las hipótesis de futuro, y, por lo tanto, provocar la
necesidad de rever ciertas hipótesis. Toda lucha política se
moviliza en función de ciertos objetivos, y los cambios en
esas condiciones hacen que uno tenga que rever y recons-
truir esos objetivos. Por lo tanto, ahí hay un componente
que hace presente la discusión del futuro. Ya sea en térmi-
nos de desplome de imágenes previas, de decadencia, de
apocalipsis, o de recombinaciones, creo que ese fenómeno
se va a intensificar en los próximos años.
En ese sentido, me parece interesante la propuesta de
Stephen Duncombe, un activista y crítico estadounidense,
de pensar el futuro a partir de las nuevas condiciones y
de los nuevos rasgos y aspectos que adquirió la sociedad
en los últimos veinte años. Ser fiel a estas novedades. Esto
tendría que ver con cómo el mercado y el consumo han
sabido poner en juego unas escenas y unas utopías con una
capacidad de seducción social muy fuerte. Ahí hay algo
que yo intuyo que se va a explorar cada vez más de aquí
en adelante. Esa relación de las nuevas culturas populares
y sus gérmenes del futuro.
¿Cuál sería una nueva cultura popular poderosa en este
momento?
Los videojuegos. Yo tengo esta especie de hipótesis: si
uno hiciera la historia de los medios de comunicación
de los últimos cuarenta años apuntalada en la tele-
visión, armaría una cierta imagen, o lógica, ligada al
espectáculo, lo direccional, la contemplación, la parti-
cipación subordinada, etc. Ahora bien, si uno pensara
la lógica de los medios desde los videojuegos, que em-
pezaron a masificarse a fines de los setenta, surge una
imagen completamente distinta. Sin interacción, no hay
videojuego. El videojuego tiene una dimensión compe-
titiva que la televisión no tiene: competición contra la
máquina, competición con otros, competición con uno
mismo. Me parece que los videojuegos constituyeron
subjetividades mediáticas diferentes de las de la televi-
sión, e incluso creo que Internet está más cerca de ser
hija de los videojuegos que de la televisión. Facebook
es, en definitiva, el gran videojuego. Un gran videojuego
donde uno interacciona con otros.
El fenómeno Pokémon Go empalma con esas subjeti-
vidades. Me flashea un cambio: muchos juegos lo que ha-
cían era incorporar la realidad al juego y uno se esforzaba
por que parecieran reales. Pokémon Go cumple el sueño
de ficcionar la realidad, por decirlo muy violentamente.
Te ficciona la esquina de una ciudad. La hiperrealidad, la
realidad aumentada en la que se acomodan estos juegos es
un punto hacia el cual estamos yendo, y hay que empezar a

hypotheses as well. All political struggles are mobilized to
obtain certain objectives, and changes in conditions mean
that one has to take another look at and to reconstruct
those objectives. So that brings up the question of the fu-
ture—whether in terms of the collapse of previous images,
of decline, of apocalypses, or of re-combinations—and I
think that is only going to intensify in the coming years.
Along those lines, I think that North American
activist and critic Stephen Duncombe is formulating
something interesting when he suggests envisioning the
future on the basis of new conditions and of the new
characteristics and traits that society has taken on in the
last twenty years. To be true to those novelties. That is
related to how the market and consumerism have been
able to bring into play scenes and market utopias with
great power of seduction socially. I sense that there is
something there—the relationship between new popular
cultures and their seeds for the future—that is going to
be explored in greater and greater depth from now on.
What would constitute, in your mind, a powerful new
popular culture at this time?
Video games. I have a hypothesis of sorts: if you were to
put together the history of the mass media of the last forty
years starting with television, a certain image, or logic,
would emerge, one tied to show business and spectacle, a
directional logic of watching and subordinate participa-
tion, etc. But if you think of the logic of the media starting
with video games, which took hold on a mass scale in the
late seventies, the image is completely different. Without
interaction, there is no video game. There is a competitive
dimension to the video game that is nowhere in television:
competition against the machine, competition against oth-
ers, competition with one’s self. I think that video games
have constituted media subjectivities different from the
ones constituted by television. In fact, I think that the In-
ternet is closer kin to video games than it is to television.
There is no doubt in my mind that Facebook is a great
video game, one where you interact with others.
The Pokemon Go phenomenon is tied to those sub-
jectivities. I sense an amazing change: what a lot of games
did was to bring reality into the game and you had to try
to make them seem real. Pokemon Go makes the dream of
fictionalizing reality come true, to put it very starkly. It fic-
tionalizes the corner of a city. Hyperreality, the augmented
reality of which these games form part, is one of the places
we are headed—and we have to start to problematize it
on a social level and to make it a policy point because ten
years from now it’s going to be as much a part of our social
life as electricity. If we don’t jump into that debate, we’ll be
left behind once again.
What chances do we have of establishing a strategic intel-
ligence in relation to the future? The notion of strategic
intelligence is taken from François Jullien, right?
Yes. Jullien would say that to intelligize the real strategi-
cally is to intelligize it as process of constant transforma-
tion. I tie that idea to the idea of future as “horizon with
no horizon.” That means understanding it not as the place
of an objective or, on the contrary, of sheer uncertainty, but
rather as a strategic exercise based on recognition that we
are immersed in discontinuous realities. That puts the very
idea of horizon in crisis. When you walk, the horizon line

de las políticas, porque de aquí a diez años va a ser un dato
de la vida social como hoy lo es la electricidad. Si no anti-
cipamos algo de esa discusión, otra vez correremos detrás.
¿Qué posibilidades tenemos de establecer una inteligencia
estratégica con respecto al futuro? El concepto de inteli-
gencia estratégica viene de François Jullien, ¿no?
Sí. Jullien plantearía que inteligir estratégicamente lo real
es inteligirlo como proceso de transformación constante.
Yo empalmo esa idea con la del futuro como “un horizonte
sin horizonte”, que permite entenderlo no como el lugar
de un objetivo o, por el contrario, de la pura incertidum-
bre, sino como un ejercicio estratégico que parte del reco-
nocimiento de estar inmersos en realidades discontinuas.
Esto hace que la idea misma de horizonte entre en crisis.
Si uno camina, el horizonte cambia permanentemente. A
diferencia de la idea de Eduardo Galeano de que la utopía
es un horizonte que sirve para caminar, lo que me interesa
es cómo a cada paso esa utopía necesita ser redefinida,
porque no sólo sirve para caminar, sino que es ella misma
en ese caminar lo que hay que modificar.
¿Hay puntos de referencia móviles, o ni siquiera los hay?
Hay puntos de referencia móviles, porque la idea de que
todo cambia todo el tiempo tampoco es cierta. Hay ciertas
constancias, continuidades, que se mueven. El mundo no
es pura discontinuidad, hay patrones, pero eso está en una
constante reconfiguración.
El otro punto es que me parece que hay que asumir
que el futuro forma parte de las relaciones de poder. El fu-
turo no es el apocalipsis, ni es el lugar donde resolveremos
todos nuestros conflictos, ni es algo que puede esperar, en
términos de debate y de prácticas. Es una dimensión que
tiene que estar desplegada hoy, ya sea en términos de prefi-
guraciones –es decir, tratar de poner en acto algo de lo que
imaginamos que queremos en el futuro–, o para poner en
discusión los futuros que están circulando socialmente. Ahí
es donde, creo, el futuro termina de adquirir una compleji-
dad y una problematicidad fundamentales. A mí me parece
fundamental discutir el futuro. Mi móvil es poder incorpo-
rar nuevas lecturas de este problema para poder repensar
las relaciones sociales actuales y poder desplegar nuevas.
¿Se podría decir que el que no está pensando en el futuro
está en desventaja en esa pelea?
Creo que sí, pero a la vez creo también que hay muchas
formas de pensar el futuro. Un ejercicio interesante es, por
ejemplo, el que hizo Ernst Bloch en la década del 30 en El
principio esperanza, y que consistió en ir a buscar la cues-
tión de la futuridad a lugares donde, para cierto pensa-
miento político o social, no necesariamente está o es irre-
levante. Por ejemplo, los dibujos infantiles, la publicidad,
los sueños y el inconsciente, los documentos militares, la
música. Mi hipótesis de investigación es que futuridades
hay en todos los discursos y en todas las prácticas. Ahí la
futuridad organiza nuestras decisiones también, y organi-
za nuestros vínculos, nuestros objetivos, nuestros deseos.
De hecho, el deseo ya en sí mismo tiene algo de futuridad. A
mí lo que me interesa es complejizar, multiplicar las zonas
donde se producen estas futuridades, para poder ir arman-
do una imagen general y también oportunidades para que
las intervenciones que uno pueda ir llevando adelante ten-
gan una mayor cantidad de capas sobre las cuales incidir.
La ética, el medio ambiente, la vida cotidiana; en todos
esos lugares hay hipótesis de futuro y futuridades des-
plegándose.

changes all the time. Unlike Eduardo Galeano, who puts
forth the idea that utopia is a horizon that helps us walk,
I am interested in how, with each step, that utopia must
be redefined, because it not only helps us walk, but is itself
what must be changed through that walking.
Are there mobile points or reference, or not even?
There are mobile points of reference, because the idea
that everything changes all the time isn’t really true either.
There are certain constancies, continuities that shift. The
world isn’t sheer discontinuity—there are patterns—but it
is in a state of constant reconfiguration.
The other thing that must be accepted, I think, is that
the future forms part of power relations. The future is not
the apocalypses; it’s not the place where we will work out
all our conflicts or something that can stand by and wait
in terms of debate and practices. It is a dimension that
must be deployed today, whether in terms of pre-figura-
tions—that is, trying to enact something of that which we
imagine we want in the future—or to question the futures
that circulate socially. That is how, in my view, the future
ends up taking on a complexity and problematicity that
are, I think, fundamental. I think it is essential to discuss
the future. What motivates me is to be able to bring new
readings to bear on this problem in order to rethink cur-
rent social relations and to deploy new ones.
Do you think that if you are not thinking about the future
you are at a disadvantage in this fight?
I think so, but I also think there are lots of ways of think-
ing about the future. One interesting exercise was Ernst
Bloch’s The Principle of Hope from the thirties. It con-
sisted of setting out to look for the question of futurity
in places where, for certain strains of political and social
thought, there was none or it was irrelevant. He looked
to children’s drawings, advertising, dreams and the un-
conscious, military documents, music. It is my research
hypothesis that futurities are found in all discourses and
in all practices. Futurity organizes our decisions, our rela-
tionships, our objectives, our desires. Desire, by definition,
partakes of futurity. What I am interested in is making the
zones where those futurities are produced more complex
and multiple in order to put together a general image and
to create opportunities so that the interventions one can
effect have more and more layers to act on. Ethics, the
environment, daily life—in all of those realms there are
future hypotheses and futurities unfolding.
Business forces seem to have a fairly developed conscious-
ness of the possibility of controlling the future. Can other
futurities as they are currently configured contest control
of that terrain?
I think that, as long as we are unable to put together future
images and practices that envisage control of the future in
relation to the production capacity that the futures of the
market and of technology hold, it’s going to be very hard
for that cultural battle to be won. Without that dimension,
I think we lose a lot of energy—and I think that that’s very
important. If we cannot act on hegemonic forms of the
relationship between culture and time and culture and fu-
turity, it’s very unlikely we will be able to modify anything
structural on the social level.
In that sense, isn’t there a combination of, on the one hand,
new future promises that come from business-government
discourses and, on the other, the constant spread of the
idea or even the mandate to enjoy the present? Are they
part of the same operation?

La conciencia de la posibilidad de controlar el futuro pare-
ce estar bastante desarrollada en las fuerzas empresariales.
¿Las otras futuridades pueden disputarle el terreno a ese
control, tal como están configuradas en este momento?
Creo que en la medida en que no podamos elaborar imáge-
nes de futuro y prácticas que piensen el control del futuro
con la capacidad de producción que tienen los futuros del
mercado y de la tecnología, va a ser muy difícil que esa
disputa cultural pueda ser ganada en algún punto. Sin esa
dimensión, me parece que perdemos mucha energía. Esto
me parece muy importante. Si no podemos incidir en las
formas hegemónicas de la relación entre cultura y tempo-
ralidad y cultura y futuridad es muy difícil que podamos
modificar algo socialmente estructural.
En ese sentido, ¿no hay como una combinación entre,
por un lado, nuevas promesas de futuro que vienen de los
discursos empresario-gubernamentales, y, por otro, una
inseminación permanente de la idea o casi del mandato de
disfrutar el presente? ¿Son parte de una misma operación?
Es parte de un mismo discurso, que es el discurso de la
publicidad comercial. La publicidad comercial plantea un
mundo ideal. En un momento era la familia y el auto, en
otro era estar solo en una playa. Ahora quizá tiene más
que ver con que el consumo sea lo que organice el presente
de la amistad u otras relaciones marcadas por un afecto
“positivo”. Creo que lo que se contrabandea es la idea de
que en el futuro habrá instantes. El futuro es la repetición
de estos instantes, es la repetición del presente afectivo del
consumo.
¿Pero de ese modo no se busca una suerte de negación del
futuro, una forma de eternidad?
Lo que veo es una solidificación del futuro. No lo niega,
sino que plantea que va a ser siempre un poco de la misma
manera. Por ejemplo, la lógica de los amigos es la de los
amigos para toda la vida. La amistad como espacio de
una sociabilidad cotidiana y muy basada en el pasado,
paradójicamente. Como que en realidad lo que se tiene
que repetir, el instante, fue así en el pasado y habrá de ser
así en el futuro. Otro ejemplo es la intensidad emotiva.
Ahí lo que se propone es que el mercado sea la media-
ción de todas las experiencias afectivas: donde haya una
emoción, existirá un consumo. Tal la profecía publicitaria.
Arma una sucesión de instantes idénticos o, mejor dicho,
de excepcionalidades idénticas. Entonces, como Bloch, no
creo que ningún discurso social sea capaz de no implicar
algún tipo de futuridad. Y para mí el mercado es un poco
eso. Discutirlo invita a discutir cuáles son las corrientes
dominantes de la cultura contemporánea en relación con
el tiempo y en relación con el futuro.

They are part of the same discourse, which is the dis-
course of advertising. Advertising posits an ideal world.
At a certain moment, it was the family and the car, at an-
other to be alone on the beach. Now it may be more tied
to the idea that consuming is what organizes the present
of friendship and of other relationships marked by a “posi-
tive” affect. I think that what stealthily works its way in
here is the idea that in the future there will be instants. The
future is the repetition of those instants; it is the repetition
of the affective present of consumerism.
But doesn’t that mean a sort of negation of the future, a
form of eternity?
What I see is a solidification of the future. Not a denial of
the future, but the idea that it will always be somewhat the
same. The logic of friendship, for example, is the logic of
lifelong friends. Friendship as the space of a daily socia-
bility that is, paradoxically, deeply rooted in the past. As
if the instant—that which has to be repeated—were just
the same in the past and will be the same in the future.
Another example is emotional intensity. The idea that the
market is what mediates all of those affective experiences:
where there’s an emotion, there’s an act of consumerism.
That is the advertising prophecy. It puts together a series
of identical instants or, rather, of identical exceptionalities.
So I, like Bloch, don’t believe that any social discourse is
capable of not implying some type of futurity. And, for me,
that’s what—to some extent—the market is. Disputing it
opens up a discussion on what the dominant strains of
contemporary culture are in relation to time and in rela-
tion to the future.
