A veces

IN WHITE
To him, they are already parents of a grandfather, grandchildren of a child. They see
him crooked on the sofa, twined around his age, forgetting the years he has lived.
He hardly breathes or eats and the cinnamon spots color his skin, which is closer
to the bone as the days go by, a tissue that draws like a formidable bow on every
breath. They see him napping and waking up in silence like a turn signal that can’t
tell the difference between day and night. However, sometimes, when he is awake
and strong enough, with or without a cause, he gets mad with someone like he
could, deep within, break the chains that tie him to his dementia. Shortly afterwards
his strength fades away, but the anger atmosphere persists the whole morning.
This surprise happens less and less frequently. A while ago, everybody would
make a mental note of the things he had forgotten, but now they just celebrate if
they see a little glimpse of his memories. Sometimes he goes by the window on
his own, as if trying to prove that he still controls his body, however, she stumbles,
making him remember that a long time has passed since he dropped the pencil
and grabbed oblivion instead.
When he goes for a walk to the park and looks like a captain surrounded by the as-
sault guard, neighbors show him respect and keep his memories in a good shape.
He acts normal, with the crystal clear truth in his eyes, assenting briefly with his
hands. No one fools themselves; everyone knows that even though the world is
struggling to let him go, everyday is a new step closer to loss. Maybe it is the ardu-
ous pace of an old man, or the wild trot of a child.
