...y Fernando Ferrer Martínez con su seudónimo, Ferrer Ferran, dice: “La
música es tan maravillosa que no tiene descripción, solamente se puede sentir”, “…
seamos capaces y afortunados de sentir esa magia que la música nos da, veamos
aquello que no se ve de la partitura”.

Ferrer Ferran nació en Valencia, no hace demasiados años. Su gran pasión: ordenar
sonidos en una partitura. Su deseo: que el público sea capaz de entender, apreciar y
sentir esos sonidos ordenados. Su compositor preferido: Leonard Bernstein.
“Leonard lo era todo, tenía alma y un gran corazón aparte de ser un gran compositor,
un magnífico pianista y un fabuloso director. Pero lo más importante es que también
era una gran persona”.
“La música es esa sensación que flota en el aire, que todo ser vivo percibe, pero solo
los afortunados son capaces de sentir ese maravilloso lenguaje universal abstracto”.

Ferrer es nombrado “Bachiller de Honor de la Argamasilla” en 2013 (Ciudad Real), es

Profesor en el Conservatorio de Música de Valencia, Director de Honor de la Banda
Primitiva de Paiporta (Valencia), Director de la Banda Sinfónica Ateneo Musical de
Cullera (Valencia) y de la Orquesta de Vientos “Allegro” en Valencia, Profesor Principal
en el “Corso Biennale in Direzione di Banda” en Aosta (Italia) y Principal Director
Invitado en la Banda Sinfónica “Simón Bolívar” de Venezuela. También es Director
Artístico de la Banda Sinfónica Provincial de Ciudad Real, y Director de Allegro Centro
Musical (Valencia).

Ferrán ha recibido multitud de premios y reconocimientos en todo el mundo, en el

terreno de la composición y de la dirección, pero no es partidario de los curriculums, y
prefiere que se sepa de él escuchando su propia música, editada ya en 19 CDs
integrales en los que está registrada parte de su producción. “La música es el reflejo
del alma”.

Su principal entrega está en crear música para hacer feliz, trabajo que desempeña
recibiendo encargos de los cinco continentes; siguiendo con la dirección de orquestas
de viento, siendo solicitado por todo el mundo para dirigir; y su labor en la enseñanza
de la música en el Conservatorio de Música de Valencia.

En la actualidad Ferrer Ferran escribe su música motivado por peticiones y encargos

tratando de hacer llegar la felicidad mediante su obra, siendo su principal lema
“emocionar y hacer soñar con mi sueño de componer”.

Biography

and Fernando Ferrer Martinez using his nom d´artiste, Ferrer Ferran, says:
“The music is so marvellous that words cannot describe it —it can only be felt ”, “
we are the lucky ones if we can feel the magic of the music and also the unwritten part
of the score —its soul.

Ferrer Ferran was born in Valencia, not too many years ago. His great passion: to
organize sounds in the score. His wish: that the audience be able to understand,
cherish and feel those organized sounds. His favourite composer: Leonard Bernstein.
“Leonard was everything, he had soul and a great heart besides being a majestic
composer, a renowned pianist and an excellent conductor. However, the most
important thing is he was a wonderful person”.
“Music seems to float in the air, being perceived by all living beings, but only some can
feel that amazing, universal abstract language”.

Ferrer Ferran was awarded the “Bachelor of Honor of Argamasilla” (Ciudad Real) in
2013. He is a Professor at the Professional Music Conservatory of Valencia,
Conductor of Honor for the “Banda Primitiva de Paiporta” (Valencia), Conductor for the
Symphony Wind Orchestra “Ateneo Musical” in Cullera (Valencia) and head of the
Wind Orchestra “Allegro” in Valencia, Senior Professor for the “Corso Biennale in
Direzione di Banda” in Aosta (Italia) and Chief Guest Conductor for the Symphony
Band “Simón Bolívar” of Venezuela, as well as Artistic Conductor for the Provincial
Symphony Band of Ciudad Real.

Ferrán has received many awards and recognitions in the composing and conducting
fields all over the world. He is not an advocate of long CVs, he prefers to be known by
his own music —“the music shows one’s soul”. This it can be experienced on any of
his 19 integral CDs where part of his oeuvre is recorded.

He is dedicated to the creation of music that imparts happiness in each one of his
commissions in the five continents, followed by his conducting of wind orchestras,
which has been requested all over the world, and finally in the teaching arena in the
Conservatory of Music in Valencia.

At present, Ferrer Ferran writes all his music by request from orchestras and
musicians. In his compositions, his ultimate desire is to give joy to listeners, with his
main motto being: “to thrill with my dream of composing”.

Turgut Reis, llamado Dragut, nació a inicios del siglo XVI. Fue el más temido de los corsarios otomanos y luchó
contra los barcos cristianos en numerosas batallas por todo el Mediterráneo, donde destacó por su ferocidad. Los
cuantiosos daños que causó a la flota española desesperaron a Carlos V, que mandó capturarlo y estuvo en galeras
como esclavo durante cuatro años, pero Barbarroja pagó su rescate y Dragut fue liberado.

Un 25 de mayo de 1550, el pirata Dragut, lugarteniente del corsario Barbarroja, atacó por sorpresa la ciudad de Cullera,
llevándose un botín importante de bienes y cautivos. El suceso causó gran conmoción en la Cullera de la época y la
villa quedó prácticamente despoblada durante décadas.

Este Poema Sinfónico “Dragut el Pirata” nos traslada a aquellos ingratos momentos, describiendo en música lo
acontecido mediante las siguientes secuencias: Presagio. Turgut Reis, llamado Dragut (1514 – 1565). Rumbo a la
ciudad de Cullera. El barco pirata. La sorprendente ciudad mediterránea de Cullera. Preparando el asalto a la villa de
Cullera. Remando a toda vela. Presentimiento, la villa de Cullera será saqueada. La cantina pirata. Dragut y sus piratas
bordean Cullera para iniciar el ataque. Disparando los cañones. Asaltando la ciudad de Cullera. Huida, después del
saqueo, de Dragut y sus piratas. Cullera saqueada y desvalijada. La ciudad de Cullera recuperada. Cullera, el paraíso.

Encargo del Excmo. Ayuntamiento de Cullera, para ser obra obligada en el 72º Certamen Nacional de Bandas de
Música “Ciutat de Cullera”, en el año 2019.

“Dragut el Pirata” se estrenó los días 17 y 24 de Febrero por las dos bandas sinfónicas locales del municipio de Cullera,
en el Auditorio Municipal: La Sociedad Musical Santa Cecilia de Cullera, dirigida por Carlos Garcés y el Ateneo Musical
de Cullera, dirigida por Ferrer Ferran.

DRAGUT THE PIRATE
Description of the work

Turgut Reis —known as “Dragut”—was born at the turn of the XVI century. Dragut was the most feared
Ottoman corsair and fought against Christian ships in numerous battles throughout the Mediterranean Sea. As a result,
he became famous for his fierceness. Dragut caused an enormous amount of damage to the Spanish fleet which
despaired Charles the Fifth, who ordered his capture and condemned him as a rower for four years. Finally, Barbarroja
—an Ottoman admiral— paid his ransom and he was freed.

On May 25th of 1550, the pirate Dragut —lieutenant of the corsair Barbarroja— led a surprise attack on the village of
Cullera, achieving a valuable booty of assets and captives. This was a big shock for the townspeople and Cullera
remained depopulated for decades.

The symphonic poem “Dragut the Pirate” takes us back in time to that stunning Mediterranean city of Cullera and
describes in music the story and events through the following sequences: Premonition. Turgut Reis, called Dragut (1514
- 1565). Approaching the city of Cullera. The pirate ship. The astonishing Mediterranean city of Cullera. Preparing the
attack on Cullera (1550). Rowing at full sail. Premonition; the village of Cullera will be sacked. The pirate tavern. Dragut
and his pirates land in Cullera to start the attack. Firing the cannons. Storming the city of Cullera. Dragut and his pirates
flee after the assault. Cullera, sacked and plundered. The recovery of the city of Cullera —Cullera, the paradise

and the sea create a marvellous paradise and a jewel in the Mediterranean Sea. In this city music plays a privileged role,
so much so that there are two extraordinary wind orchestras known worldwide for their exceptional artistic quality”.

“Dragut the Pirate” was commissioned by the City Council of Cullera as compulsory for the 72nd National Wind Orchestra
Competition,“Ciutat de Cullera”, in 2019.

“Dragut the Pirate” was premiered on 17th and 24th of February, 2019, and was performed by the two local symphonic
wind orchestras in the city of Cullera in the Municipal Auditorium: The Wind Orchestra “Santa Cecilia de Cullera”,
conducted by Carlos Garcés and the Wind Orchestra “Ateneo Musical de Cullera”, conducted by the composer, Ferrer
Ferran.

DRAGUT EL PIRATA es un poema descriptivo que va relatando los acontecimientos tal y como indican
las citas.

Los tempos, en general, oscilan entre las dos indicaciones señaladas.

En los fragmentos de los compases 208 y 414, las lamentaciones vienen representadas con un solo de
Violoncello. Si la orquesta no dispusiera de este instrumentista, o aún si lo tuviera, y por decisión del
director así lo desease, puede interpretarlo el Corno Inglés a solo, dando igualmente el mismo resultado.

El momento de los cañones y posteriores fragmentos en los que se indica: “dos bombos, uno a la derecha
y otro a la izquierda del escenario”; lo ideal sería tal y como se muestra en el dibujo: situar los bombos en
los extremos derecho e izquierdo, a la misma altura del podium del director.

El bombo que se interpreta en el tutti debe estar en su lugar habitual, junto con toda la percusión.

NOTES TO THE CONDUCTOR

DRAGUT THE PIRATE is a descriptive poem which relates the events as stated in the quotes.

In general, the tempo ranges between the two indications mentioned.

The laments in the excerpts of the bars 208 and 414 are performed by a solo violoncello. In the absence of
this instrumentalist, or as per the conductor’s ruling, it may instead be performed by the English horn,
giving the same effect.

The most accurate performance for the cannons and subsequent fragments as stated: “two bass drums
must be placed one on the right and the other on the left side of the stage” will be as it is shown in the
picture —at the same conductor stage level, on the right and left edges.

In the tutti the bass drum must be placed at its regular place, next to the percussion.
