PLAYAS
La naturaleza ha dotado a Alicante de
una gran cantidad de playas que supo-
nen uno de sus principales atractivos
turísticos tanto por la calidad de sus
aguas y arena como por lo bello de los
parajes que las rodean. Están dotadas
de los mejores servicios (vigilancia,
servicios sanitarios, hoteles, restaurantes
y cafeterías, acceso mediante transporte
público, servicios lúdicos accesiblesetc).
Desde las más bulliciosas hasta las más
solitarias y apartadas son sin duda el
motivo preferido de las postales de la
ciudad.
De entre las playas alicantinas destacan;
El Postiguet situada en pleno casco ur-
bano de la ciudad, a los pies del monte
Benacantil y frente al Castillo de Santa
Bárbara, está rodeada de un paseo
marítimo con preciosas vista de la bahía.
También nos encontramos con la playa
San Juan, que es la playa más conoci-
da de Alicante, de arena fina y dorada.
Cuenta con siete kilómetros de longitud
y casi cien metros de anchura.
No podemos olvidarnos de la Isla de
Tabarca situada a 11 millas náuticas de la
ciudad de Alicante. Se trata de la única
isla habitada de la Comunidad Valen-
ciana.
Su núcleo urbano está rodeado por mu-
rallas, que hacen que el conjunto haya
sido declarado Bien de Interés Cultural.
La excelente calidad de sus aguas y la
biodiversidad de su fauna y flora han he-
cho que fuera declarada Reserva Marina
del Mediterráneo.
Otras playas de las que podemos
disfrutar en la ciudad son la Albufere-
ta, ubicada al noreste de la ciudad, el
Saladar-Urbanova, las tranquilas calas
del Cabo de las Huertas.
FIESTAS
Alicante también se caracteriza por sus
fiestas. Las más conocidas son las de las
Fogueres de San Juan, que tienen lugar
entre los días 20 a 24 de junio y giran en
torno a la colocación de unas impresio-
nantes esculturas multicolor realizadas
en cartón, y que son quemadas la noche

del 24 de junio. A su término, se celebra
un concurso de fuegos artificiales dispa-
rados desde la playa del Postiguet que
finaliza el 29 de junio.
Otras conocidas fiestas son los desfiles
de Moros y Cristianos, que se celebran
en varios momentos del año y en zonas
distintas de la ciudad. Los carnavales
y la Semana Santa son también fiestas
muy importantes. Otras celebraciones
locales menos conocidas, pero no por
ello menos interesantes, incluyen las
denominadas Cruces de Mayo en el
barrio de Santa Cruz o el peregrinaje al
monasterio de la Santa Faz entre otras.

is in various museums of the city, which
are responsible for keeping alive this
memory. Museums such as; the MARQ
(Provincial Archaeological Museum of
Alicante) is one of the most avant-garde
museums of Spain for its innovative
way of tackling archeology, relying on
the use of modern audio-visual techni-
ques, which made it win the European
Museum of the Year Award in 2004;
the Museum of Contemporary Art of
Alicante (MACA), located in the historic
centre of Alicante, in front of the Basilica
of Santa Maria has a total of 4,700 m2
intended for exhibitions, conferences
and concerts of chamber music. At the
cornerstone, acquired with funds from
the Collection of Twentieth Century
Art, donated by Eusebio Sempere to
the city in 1978: The Museum of the city
in the Castle of Santa Barbara (MUSA)
that is located in five of the rooms of
the famous fortress and analyses the
history of Alicante and its inhabitants
by themed blocks; the MUBAG (Gravina
Museum of Fine Arts), an eighteenth-
century building that now houses a

interesting collection of painters of Ali-
cante between the 16th century and the
early decades of the twentieth century;
the Museum of Fogueres whose themed

MONUMENTS
One of the most representative monu-
ments, without doubt, is the Castle of
Santa Barbara, located on the top of
mount Benacantil, facing the sea and
166m above sea level, this is one of the
largest medieval fortresses in Spain,
having an enormous strategic value. It
has 3 levels at three heights and from
three different eras of the fourteenth
century to the eighteenth century ha-
ving fantastic views of the bay and the
whole city.
From the same Castle of Santa Barbara
you can descend to the old town, where
you will find most of these buildings
following the path that runs through
the Park of Ereta, on the same side of
the mount through the picturesque and
typical neighbourhood of Santa Cruz.
In this pleasant stroll, before realising it,
we arrive at the same historic city centre
of Alicante, discovering by each step
monuments such as the iconic Basilica
of Santa Maria, a gothic temple that was
built on the major Islamic mosque and
consists of a single nave, without cross,
with side chapels situated between
the buttresses and with a total of six
corridors.
It has an invaluable artistic and docu-
mentary fund whose oldest part is an
incunabulum of the XIII century as well
as the baroque valencian organ of 1653.
The Co-cathedral of Saint Nicholas, built
in Renaissance herreriano style located
in the old part of the city, being one of
the most emblematic buildings of the
same. This is a church in the form of a
latin cross with inter-communicating
chapels. In its interior the Cloister of
the fifteenth century and the Chapel of
the Communion are its most important
features. The Town Hall of the city, a ba-
roque-style palace of XVIII century pre-
sents a curiosity by having in its interior
the reference from which to measure the
altitude above sea level of anywhere in
Spain. This reference point, called “Cota
Cero”, is located on the first step of the
main staircase of the building.
BEACHES
Nature has endowed Alicante with a
great amount of beaches which repre-
sents one of its main tourist attractions
both for the quality of its water and sand
as well as by the beauty of the lands-
capes that surround them. These are
equipped with the best services (secu-
rity, health services, hotels, restaurants
and cafes, accessibility by public trans-
port, and accessible recreational services
etc). The most active up to the more
secluded and remote areas are without
doubt the favourite scenes for postcards
of the city.
The most important beaches of Alican-
te are; The Postiguet situated in the
urban centre of the city, at the foot of
Mount Benacantil and in front of the
castle of Santa Barbara, surrounded by
a promenade with beautiful views of the
Bay. Also can be found the playa San
Juan, which is the best-known beach in
Alicante with fine golden sand. It is seven
kilometres in length and almost one hun-
dred metres wide.

a gastronomía local es, sin ninguna
duda, uno de los atractivos turísti-
cos más destacados de Alicante.
La  cocina  alicantina es típicamente  me-
diterránea. La historia de Alicante, su
situación geográfica, su  clima y la ferti-
lidad de sus tierras han ido dotándola de
una enorme riqueza y variedad.
El arroz, ingrediente base de toda la co-
cina valenciana, es protagonista de una
gran  diversidad de recetas, aunque es
acertado decir que se utilizan muchos
otros ingredientes para la elaboración de
estas recetas típicas.
Aún así no se puede dejar de hablar de
la paella alicantina en la que participan la
ñora, el pimiento y los ajos y cuya seña
de identidad básica es la unión de carnes,
fundamentalmente pollo, con productos
del mar: pescados, (atún, emperador…)
crustáceos (langostinos, gambas…) y
moluscos (mejillones, sepia, calama-
res…). Destacan también el arroz a banda,
el arroz caldoso y la popular olleta.
El caldero, todo un cocido de mar, cons-
tituye por sí solo una comida completa
y es el plato típico de la isla de Tabarca.
Se trata de un arroz guisado a partir de

un contundente fondo de pescado (rape,
congrio, mújol, gallina…) seguido de esos
mismos servidos como segundo plato y
acompañado comúnmente por un sus-
tancioso y fragante all i oli.
La oferta culinaria no acaba en sus arro-
ces sino que se amplía a otros campos
igual de sugerentes. Antes de sentarse a
la mesa, los aperitivos son lo más indicado
para ir abriendo el apetito. Para ello, nada
mejor que las tradicionales tapas y mon-
taditos, pequeños panecillos rellenos, tí-
picos de esta zona, que combinan carnes
y salazones con verduras  y que se han
popularizado en el resto del país.
Los salazones, la mojama, huevas, ven-
tresca de atún, tonyina de sorra, aren-
ques,  etc., también se sirven como ape-
ritivo destacando las cocas saladas con
atún (coca amb tonyina) o sardina, y
el“esmorzaret alacantí” a base de sardina
salada, huevo frito y ñora.
Del mar Mediterráneo se obtienen  pes-
cados y mariscos muy frescos, de gran
calidad, y que no deben dejar de probar-
se como las deliciosas  gambas rojas ali-
cantinas o los langostinos, quisquillas y
cigalas, los calamares, los salmonetes,  y
muchas otras delicias marítimas.
Y para el postre, también los productos
de la tierra: los  rollitos de anís, la coca
boba (bizcocho esponjoso dulce), dátiles
y frutos secos. No hay que olvidar los fa-
mosos helados y el turrón de Jijona o el
delicioso  chocolate  de la vecina  pobla-
ción de Villajoyosa.
El vino es otro de los elementos que no
falta en la mesa alicantina, destacando
los  vinos tintos  de doble capa, de color
intenso, los rosados y blancos jóvenes de
uva  monastrell, vermeta o garnatxa y el
Fondillón, vino añejo alicantino de fama
mundial.
La oferta gastronómica alicantina se pre-
senta también en forma de una gran va-
riedad de bares y restaurantes repartidos
en toda la ciudad. Desde la multitud de
restaurantes situados en el muelle de Le-
vante del Puerto, pasando por los bares
de tapas de la famosa Rambla de Méndez
Núñez, sin olvidar los restaurantes de co-
mida casera del casco antiguo.

Rice, the basic ingredient of all of the
region’s cuisine, plays a leading role in
a huge variety of meals, although many
other ingredients are also used in the
preparation of traditional recipes.
However, we cannot fail to mention the
Alicante paella, with ingredients such as
“Nyora” sun-dried peppers, bell peppers
and garlic along with its characteristic
combination of meats, mainly chicken,
with fish, (tuna, swordfish…) and seafood
(prawns, langoustines, mussels, cuttlefish,
squid…). Arroz a banda, a rice dish with
seafood, arroz caldoso, a brothy rice dish
with seafood and the popular olleta rice
dish with meat and vegetables, are also
worthy of special mention.
El caldero, a seafood stew, is a meal in it-
self and is the typical dish of Tabarca Is-
land. It consists of rice stewed in a strong
fish stock (monkfish, eel, mullet, red gu-
nard…) with the fish then served as a sec-
ond course and normally accompanied
by a rich, fragrant garlic all i oli.
The culinary choices don’t stop at these
rice dishes; they continue to spread to
other options that are equally appetising.
Before sitting down for a meal, appetisers
are the best thing to whet your appetite
with nothing better than the traditional
tapas and montaditos, small rolls with a
variety of toppings, typical of this area,
which combine meats and salted fish
with vegetables and have become popu-
lar throughout the rest of Spain.
Cured salted fish is used as the main in-
gredient for making many types of sala-
zones featuring products such as mojama
(dried salted tuna), huevas (roe), ventr-
esca de atún (tuna belly), the tonyina de
sorra type of tuna, herring, etc, and which
are served as appetisers. Alicante is also
renowned for its savoury pastries known
as cocas saladas topped with tuna (coca
amb tonyina) or sardines, as well as its es-
morzaret alacantí  made with salted sar-
dines, fried egg and ñora peppers.
The Mediterranean Sea provides the
freshest, best quality fish and shellfish
and are a must for all visitors, such as the
red shrimps from Alicante and the king
prawns, crayfish, squid, red mullet, and
many other types of seafood.
For dessert there are more local products
to enjoy, including aniseed rolls known as

dates and dried fruits. Not forgetting the
famous ice creams and the turrón de Jijo-
na nougat or the delicious chocolate from
the neighbouring town of Villajoyosa.
The dinner table would not be complete
in Alicante without wine. Dark full bodied
reds, rosés and young whites made from
grapes of the Monastrell, Vermeta or Gar-
nacha varieties and el Fondillón, a world-
famous aged wine from Alicante.
Alicante’s culinary variety is also dem-
onstrated in the selection of different
bars and restaurants throughout the city.
From the great choice of restaurants on
the Muelle de Levante wharf in the Ma-
rina and passing by the tapas bars on the
famous Rambla de Méndez Núñez, not
forgetting the restaurants serving home-
made dishes in the Old Quarter.

Laureates of the Initiative Awards 2012.
The Young Laureates, whose inspiring

positive change in their respective com-

Bas y Thea, una pareja de emprendedores de los Países Bajos, son desde hace ya
unos años los propietarios felices de una vivienda magnífica en Alicante. Disfru-

Bas and Thea, an entrepreneurial couple from the Netherlands, have been for some years the
lucky owners of a beautiful property in Alicante. Enjoying one of the healthiest climates in Europe
only a few flying hours from home.
The reason for a property abroad was to escape from their busy lives in the Netherlands. The
location was very important to them. They wanted a quiet location but with all facilities accessible

E
l borsoi es un lebrel grande con el pelo largo que
originalmente viene de Rusia. La raza se originó
allí alrededor del siglo XIII, y según algunas fuentes
incluso ya en el siglo XI. Originalmente fue utilizado para
la caza de lobos pero también para la de liebres y zorros.
Se soltaban dos o tres simultáneamente sobre la presa.
La primera mención de una caza larga con galgos rusos
data de 1260, en los tiempos del gobierno del Gran Duque
Wasilev de Moscú.
A pesar de su tamaño y s u fuerza, un borsoi adulto es
una muestra de velocidad y elegancia. Su paso es ligero
de pie y gracioso. El cuerpo es delgado, musculoso, y
esbelto. El borsoi aparece en prácticamente todos los
colores, frecuentemente en combinación con mucho blan-
co. La piel larga, ondeante y parecida a la seda requiere
mantenimiento con frecuencia. Peinarla a diario hasta
semanalmente es necesario para mantenerla sana y para
evitar enredos.
Un galgo ruso necesita mucho espacio en forma de un
terreno grande y cercado donde puede correr y jugar de
forma segura. Solamente ir a pasear atado de una correa
seguramente no le basta. A muchos borsoi también les
gusta correr atados a la bicicleta. Muchos de ellos tienen
un ansia de caza considerable y se van corriendo a toda
velocidad en cuánto divisen una prisa. Llamarles en esto
momento ya no sirve de nada. Esa ‘presa’, por cierto,
también podrá ser el gato de los vecinos. Por eso con
frecuencia no es posible pasear con ellos sin correa.
Los borsoi son en general menos aptos para las carreras,
parecen ser demasiado inteligentes para seguir la pista. Sí
compiten en los llamados ‘lure-coursings.’ Una liebre falsa
es tirada con una cuerda por un campo por medio de un
sistema de poleas. Dos borsoi persiguen la presa juntos.
Los perros colaboran llevando a cabo la persecución cada
uno a la vez y cortando el paso. Finalmente uno de los
perros atrapa la ‘presa’ y la sacude, haciendo una ‘diana’.
El galgo ruso tiene un carácter especial que se diferencia
bastante de las razas más comunes. Es muy autocons-
ciente, orgulloso y majestuoso, hasta el punto de ser
distante. También es muy egocéntrico y responde mal a
órdenes y intentos de forzarlo a llevar a cabo una acción
determinada. Eso hace que no todo el mundo sea adecua-
do para tener un borsoi. Quién se hace seducir por esta
raza magnífica hace bien en leer mucho sobre el tema de
antemano, visitar residencias caninas, e informarse bien
antes de hacer la compra
En general los borsoi se llevan bien los unos con los otros

y con otros lebreles. Esto no siempre es el caso con otras
razas. No les gustan los perros demasiado jugones, dominan-
tes, o insistentes.
Al nacer, el peso de un cachorro borsoi está entre los 400
y 500 gramos. En tres meses ya alcanzan una altura de 50
centímetros y a los siete meses las perras alcanzan los 75
centímetros, y los perros machos aproximadamente 80 cen-
tímetros. El peso en ese momento llega a los 35 y 40 kilos,
aproximadamente. Para que este crecimiento se lleve a cabo
de forma saludable se requiere una cantidad considerable de
comida de alta calidad.
A los cachorros hay que criarlos a base de respeto mutuo
