LOS ANGELES UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

Grover Cleveland Senior High School

July 07, 2010/07 de julio de 2010

Dear Parents/Estimados Padres:

I would like to extend a warm welcome to you and your child to Biology A. This four week long course is designed to
provide students with an overview of basic biology, as well as to reinforce a strong basis of scientific knowledge to aid
in further studies during high school and beyond.

YOUR CHILD WILL HAVE HOMEWORK FIVE NIGHTS A WEEK. Even if he/she has finished his/her homework,
he/she should also spend time memorizing vocabulary and studying for exams. Please keep in mind that science is a
cumulative subject and thus it is imperative that your child miss as few days of class as possible.

Please take the time to go over the following information with your child before signing and having your child return it
tomorrow. As I welcome the opportunity to talk with you and discuss your child’s progress, please feel free to contact
me at dkim@lausd.net or at Cleveland High School (818) 885-2300 with any questions or concerns. I look forward to
working with you and your child toward a positive and rewarding summer.

Sincerely/Atentamente,

Mr. Kim

Course Description
Biology A
Instructor: Mr. D. Kim Academic Semester: Summer 2010

Objectives
In accordance with the California Department of Education, upon completing Biology, students are expected to
master ten standards. Standards for Biology A include:
1c. Students know how prokaryotic cells, eukaryotic cells (including those from plants and animals), and viruses differ in
complexity and general structure.
3g. Students know how to predict possible combinations of alleles in a zygote from the genetic makeup of the parents.

For a complete list of the California Department of Education standards, please visit http://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/.
In order to achieve these standards, we will be covering one unit of Units 1-5 of Biology (Holt) a week. In addition,
students will be exercising their analytical and critical-thinking skills in order to achieve the ESLR’s (Expected School-
wide Learning Results) of Cleveland High School.
Supplies
Students should have the following materials with them everyday:
 Three-ring binder with sections for Important Reminders, Notes, Homework, Packets, Quizzes, etc.
 Two #2 pencils with erasers
 Looseleaf lined paper (assignments done on paper torn out of a spiral notebook will not be accepted)
Homework
Homework will be assigned nightly and stamped the following day to ensure it has been completed on time. A week’s
worth of stamped homework assignments must be stapled and turned in on exam days to be graded as a “Packet”.
Exams
Exams will be given every Wednesday. A score on any exam designated as “cumulative” can be used to replace a
previous low exam score provided the student has no “U”’s on the previous progress report/report card.
Assignments
Assignments should be labeled correctly with the student’s row number in the upper left hand corner (rows change
every grading period), assignment number in the upper middle portion of the paper, and the student’s roster number in
the upper right hand corner immediately before the student’s last name.
Absences/ Tutoring
Please DO NOT BE ABSENT from summer school. It is the student’s responsibility to find out what he/she has missed
during an absence, either by calling a classmate on the evening of the absence or by asking a classmate upon return
to class. A missed exam score will be made up by the subsequent cumulative exam score. Absences should be
cleared promptly; students will receive no credit for any assignment(s) from days for which their absence is marked as
uncleared or as a truancy. Tutoring times are scheduled upon request.

Grades
Academic letter grades will be determined on a point The percentage breakdown for letter grades
system. The grading scale is as follows: is as follows:

A = 90% and above Tests 20

B = 80%-89% Quizzes 40
C = 70%-79% Homework 20
D = 60%-69% Participation 10
F = 59% and below Projects/Oral Presentations/Misc. 10
Work Habits grades are determined solely on homework grades (E=90% and above, S=70-89%, U=69% and below).
Cooperation grades are determined by the number of unexcused absences/tardies and failure(s) to return proper forms
with parent signatures.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF RECEIPT
I have read the course syllabus for Mr. Kim’s Period 1 Biology A course. I agree to do my best in order to learn enough
biology in this class so that I can succeed in Chemistry and beyond. I should keep the course description in my
notebook and redeem it for points at the end of the summer.
