ABSTRACT
A preliminary study is made of upper leve1 winds obtained during seven years from meteorological stations in NW Mexico. The characteristics of the wind are described by means of
cross sections and vertical profiles using monthly avera s. A great dependance on geographical
and seasonal characteristics is found to exist. Spectr f analyses are used to describe the time
scales of the atmospheric disturbances predominant in the Gulf of California region. Orographic
influentes of the peninsula on the meridional and zonal flow are estimated using spectral energies at various pressure levels. A
eat reduction of ener
is found at synoptic frequencies
(the order of one week), which gra f ually diminishes tow arf s the South.

PRIMERA
PARTE
nivel considerados.
c) Espectros cruzados vectoriales (ECW.

a) Promedios mensuales.

SOC y en primavera e invierno ara EMP;
componente
del NO; TUC, GUD, EMI,
SOC y MAZ muestran componentes dbiles del SO.

CPD); frecuencias bajas (< 1/8 CPD) tienen
alta energia, las altas frecuencias (> 1/8
CPD) tienen poca energa. Los fenmenos
son en general ms energticos durante el
invierno que durante el verano, excepto en
la superficie.

ANALYSIS
METHODS
a) Monthly avemges
The basic radiosonde
observations at OO:00 and 12:00 hours GMT
during 7 years are used to obtain monthly
and seasonal averages which later are presented as vertical profdes and time croar
sections. From these andyses we

b) Spectral andysis.
We use the basic observations (two every da ). Time series of
the wind are complete Cr by linear interpolation and known techniques of spectral
analysis of bidimensional series are ap lied
(Godin, 1978; Mooers, 1970). To facitate
lf
the analysis of such a large amount of data,
we consider only the standard pressure levels
(Surface, 850, 700, 500, 300 and 200 mb)
and obtain spectra for sets of three months
(winter
and summer);
moreover,
these
values are averaged to obtain the winter and
summer representative spectra for every
considered site and level.

2) For almost all stations, at intermediate levels (between 3 and 10 km), a high
persistance is noted, except for EMP, MAZ
and SOC (above 8 km) during summer; it
is at this time of the year when east winds
penetrate to the Pacific slope and interact
with the northwest winds resulting in a
diminished intensity and increased variability
It is interesting to note that while the u
component shows a regular profle throughout the year, with a maximum in winter and
a minimum in summer, the v component is
very variable, with maxirnums in spring and
summer for TUC, SAN, GUD; in winter
and fall for MAZ and SOC and spring and
winter for EMP. For the later cases the
seasonal and latitudinal displacement of the
jet stream and ITCZ generate a great variability in the v component, specially for EMP
(jet stream) and for SOC (ITCZ).
RESULTS
Due to the
eat amount of results
obtained i+om eacf ~~~~~~~~~~~~
only discuss the observe
teristics. In the next chapter we combine
the results of the different methods to better
explain the anomalies of greater interest.
3) In the upper levels of the troposphere the wind is very persistent in winter
and variable in summer. Wth respect to
the intensity, the jet stream exerts its maximum effects at 200 mb, mainly during
winter and for every site, gradually diminishing towards the north and South of EMP.
During summer, the jet stream can only be
detected in the northern stations, its effect
being almost null at MAZ and SOC where
the wind has a notable component from the
east. It is interesting to note that the winds
at all sites, during all seasons and above a
height of 14-20 km, have a tendency to be
east winds.
