Introduccin al mdulo

In this module, you are going to continue to learn new grammatical elements that will help you to
both understand and communicate in english.
En este mdulo vas a aprender nuevos elementos gramaticales que te ayudarn a entender y a
comunicarte en ingls.

Do you like to imagine what you might do one day? You will learn specific expressions to talk about
hypothetical situations, which is different from conditional situations. If I do X, then I will do Y is
different from something that is not likely to happen. For example, the sentence, If I go to the store,
I will buy you ice cream, presents a condition under which I will buy you ice cream. On the other
hand, if you say If I were rich, I would buy a yacht. It is clear that it is unlikely to happen, which is
why we say that it is a hypothetical situation.
Te gusta imaginar qu hars algn da? En este mdulo aprenders expresiones para hablar de
situaciones hipotticas, y situaciones condicionales ya que hay diferencias entre ambas.
Al decir if I go to the store, I will buy you an Ice cream (Si voy a la tienda te comprar un helado),
hablamos de algo que es probable que suceda en un futuro prximo, a diferencia de decir: If I were
rich, I would buy a yacht (Si fuera rico, comprara un yate). En este caso hablamos de una situacin
no muy probable, al menos no en un futuro prximo. Es por esto que se habla de una situacin
hipottica.

What did you do today? Recently? This year? You will talk about the recent past, which is something
you have not yet done. Lastly, you will learn how to form and answer certain types of questions.
Qu hiciste hoy? El mes pasado? Este ao? En este mdulo aprenders a hablar del pasado
reciente. Por ltimo, vas a aprender cmo formar y contestar ciertos tipos de preguntas.

As has been mentioned, you continue to learn how to communicate in new contexts and this is
important because you will both see and hear them when you interact in english. You can now use
and recognize the simple past, used to, past continuous present, future, as well as use those tricky
phrasal verbs!
Cmo ya se mencion, continuars con tu aprendizaje para saber cmo comunicarte en nuevos
contextos y esto es importante ya que son cosas que vas a ver y escuchar cuando te comuniques en
ingls. Hasta el momento, puedes usar y reconocer el pasado simple, used to, el pasado continuo,
el futuro, adems de los verbos compuestos.

To formulate sentences about possible, imaginary and hypothetical situations, using the
adequate auxiliaries as well connecting words that give opposing and similar ideas.
To write sentences and questions in recent past, using the present perfect correctly as well
some of the time adverbs.

Formular enunciados sobre situaciones probables, imaginarias e hipotticas, utilizando los
auxiliares adecuados, as como palabras de conexin que den ideas opuestas y similares.
Redactar enunciados y preguntas en pasado reciente, utilizando adecuadamente el presente

Unidad 1. Imaginary situations / Situaciones imaginarias
Introduccin a la unidad

Julie and Sam are talking about what they would like to do if they won the lottery: If I won the lottery, I would
buy a house. Si ganara la lotera, comprara una casa. Heather and Pat are thinking about what they might do
when they grow up: If I were grown up, I would buy a dog. SI fuera grande, tendra un perro. What kinds of
things do you imagine doing? Throughout this unit, you will learn how to talk about things you dream about.
Julie y Sam estn imaginado que haran si ganaran la lotera: If I won the lottery, I would buy a house. Si
ganara la lotera, comprara una casa. Heather y Pat estn hablando de que les interesa hacer cuando estn
grandes: If I were grown up, I would buy a dog. Si fuera grande, tendra un perro. Qu cosas te imaginas
hacer? A travs de esta unidad, vas a aprender cmo hablar de las cosas que sueas.

Of course you remember the simple past, as well as how to talk about things you will do: If I go to the lake, I
will go fishing. Si voy al lago, voy a pescar. Now you will use the same structure to talk about a hypothetical
situation, something that is not likely to happen, or is in the distant future: If I went to the lake, I would go
fishing. Si fuera al lago, pescara. In this situation, you not going to go to the lake. Notice that the tense you
use changes when you are talking about something hypothetical.
Seguro recuerdas el pasado simple, tambin cmo hablar de las cosas que vas a hacer: If I go to the lake, I will
go fishing. Si voy al lago, voy a pescar. Ahora, vas a usar la misma estructura para hablar de situaciones
hipotticas, es decir algo que es poco probable que suceda o que suceder en un futuro muy lejano: If I went
to the lake, I would go fishing. Si fuera al lago, pescara.
En esta situacin, no vas a ir al lago. Nota que cambia los tiempos que usas para hablar de algo hipottico.

You will also learn how to talk about possible situations, which is in between conditional and hypothetical. For
example, I might have a party this weekend / Quizs tendr una fiesta este fin de semana. It is less certain than
the conditional, but, unlike the hypothetical, it is still possible.
Adems, vas a aprender a hablar de cosas que posiblemente vayas a hacer, el quizs. Por ejemplo, I might
have a party this weekend / Quizs tendr una fiesta este fin de semana. Hay ms duda que en un condicional
pero, al contrario de lo hipottico, sigue siendo posible.

Tema 1. Modals: could, would, and might to form
conditionals/Auxiliares: could, would y might para formar el
condicional

In the last module you talked about what you will do; now you will talk about what you might do.
En el mdulo anterior prendiste a hablar acerca de lo que vas a hacer; ahora vas a hablar de lo que es
posible que vayas hacer.

You can use could, would, and might with the present tense to express probability. It works similar
to if +will, which you learned in the last module, but it expresses more doubt.
Puedes usar could, would, y might con el presente para expresar la probabilidad. Funciona parecido
a: if + will (que aprendiste en el mdulo pasado) pero expresa ms duda.

It is very important to remember that could, would, and might function like the conditional in
spanish but they are not literal translations, they are functional translations.
Es muy importante recordar que could, would y might funcionan como el condicional en espaol
pero no son traducciones literales, son traducciones funcionales.

Lets take a look to the differences between could, would and might.
Veamos ahora las diferencias entre could, would y might.

Could: Podra
I am so hungry that I could eat a horse! Tengo tanta hambre que podra comerme un caballo.
Would + verb: When talking about probability, you use the conditional to take the place of would. There are
other contexts that are translated differently, but we are not going to see them in order to avoid confusion.
En el caso de probabilidad, se usa el condicional para tomar el lugar de la palabra would. Hay otros
contextos en que se traduce diferente, pero no los vamos a ver para evitar confusin.
I would like to have chicken for dinner tonight. Me gustara comer pollo para la cena hoy.
I would go to the store if you want me to. Me gustara a la tienda si quieres.
Might: Quizs, a lo mejor, es posible
I am not sure; I might go to the movies tonight. Quizs vaya al cine hoy en la noche.
I might open a restaurant if I can save some money. Tal vez abra un restaurante si puedo ahorrar bastante de
dinero.
If you notice, all of these sentences express some doubt.
Si te fijas, todas estas oraciones expresan un poco de duda.

Tema 2. Second conditional / Segundo condicional

There is an expression in english that goes: If I could I would (Si pudiera, lo hara). What would you
do if you could? Now you will be able to say it in english.
We are going to continue using could, would, and might, but now they will be completely imaginary
situations.
Hay una expresin en ingls que dice: If I could I would (Si pudiera, lo hara). Qu haras t si
pudieras? Ya vas a poder decirlo en ingles.
Seguiremos utilizando could, would y might, pero ahora van a ser situaciones completamente
imaginarias.

Ejemplos:
If I were you, I would study more for the test.
Si fuera t, estudiara ms para el examen.

The park could be beautiful if people stopped throwing garbage on the ground.
El parque podra estar muy bonito si la gente dejara de tirar basura en el suelo.

In order to talk about a completely hypothetical situation, you use:
Para hablar de una situacin completamente hipottica usamos:

Condition + Past simple + Hypothetical (could/would/might + unconjugated verb)

Using the above examples:
Usando los ejemplos anteriores:

Condition: If I were you,
Hypothetical: I would study more for the test.

Condition: if people stopped throwing garbage on the ground.
Hypothetical: The park could be beautiful

If you notice, either the condition or the hypothetical can come first. In fact, you can change these sentences
around:
Si te fijas, se puede poner cualquiera de los dos primero. De hecho, puedes cambiar estas oraciones:

I would study more for the test if I were you.
If people stopped throwing garbage on the ground, the park could be beautiful.

Remember: The part of the sentence that takes the simple past is always the part that has if.
Recuerda: La parte de la oracin en que se usa el pasado simple siempre es la que contiene if.

Examples / Ejemplos:

I would buy a car if I could. Comprara un coche si pudiera.
We might be able to save the environment if people
made some changes now.
Podramos salvar el medio ambiente si
hiciramos cambios ya.
We would be able to swim in the river if people
stopped contaminating.
Podramos nadar en el ro si dejramos
de contaminar.

Tema 3. Use of but and and/Uso de but y and

You have seen them and used them before, little connecting words that are very important, but now you will
use them in your sentences about imaginary situations.
Como has visto y usado antes, las pequeas palabras de conexin son muy importantes, pero ahora vas a
usarlas en tus oraciones sobre situaciones imaginarias.

But / Pero And / Y

Veamos:
I would go swimming with you this afternoon, but I have to study for a test.
Ira a nadar contigo en la tarde, pero tengo que estudiar para el examen.
Ana might dance at the festival, and she might sing also.
Es posible que Ana vaya a bailar en el festival en la noche, y que cante tambin.

As you probably already know, you use but to talk about contrasting ideas, while you use and to talk about
similar ideas.
Como probablemente ya sabes, usas but para hablar de ideas opuestas, mientras usas and para ideas
similares.
I would like to have a cleaner environment, but I wish I could still use disposable plates.
Me gustara tener un medio ambiente ms limpio, pero me gustara seguir usando platos
desechables.
When go on vacation, I might like to buy a new handmade rug, and I would definitely like to
buy some new curtains.
Cuando vamos de vacaciones, es posible que compre un tapete hecho a mano, y
definitivamente quiero comprar unas cortinas nuevas.
