Greetings and welcome to issue 6 of
Kikked!
In this issue, you will find artwork from
Diego Grangetti, Mohamed Kahouadji,
NowArt, Thierry Jaspart and Gerardo
Gómez, as well as photography from
2/ParallelDoor/3, Paola Peres and FilterKik,
who bring you exclusive photos from the
recent Monegros festival in Spain and the
Festival of World Cultures in Ireland.
Music comes from Santos de Goma, Berlin-
based electronic duo Monosurround and
banging techno from Generator UK. On the
DVD, you will find the video for Santos de
Goma's single "En el Parque", and 3Phase
Generator's "Jaw Driver".
Also on the dvd, we feature an in-depth 30-
minute video interview with the creators of
the "Punk In Africa" documentary, as well as
an audio interview with Don Letts, whose
film "Superstonic Sound : The Rebel Dread
Documentary" has just been released.
Many of you are probably familiar with
Don's work with the Clash and Big Audio
Dynamite. "Superstonic Sound" tells the
story of a family with 3 generations of DJ's -
Don's father, himself, and now his son.
Both "Superstonic Sound" and "Punk in
Africa" are also featured in the magazine,
and the trailers are included on the dvd.
Graffiti comes from DuctosGraff, who
recently created the first legal graffiti wall in
Dakar, Senegal; Graffiti Jam in France, and
an exclusive interview with RSH (Raymond
Salvatore Harmon), who recently attended
the Upfest 2010 graffiti festival in Bristol,
UK. We have video footage from Upfest, as
well as RSH's own work "Der Erlkonig" and
the video for Ductosgraff's "Iker:Muru"
included on the dvd.

“Krink Actarus", Mohamed Kahouadji
The work of Muhammad Kahouadji
oscillates between humor and irony.
Playing constantly with the mythical figures
that haunt us - rockstars, politicians,
cartoon characters, these paintings are
never mere caricatures, let alone the
mechanical reproduction of a situation.
Something like a rush of love through
them, like a desire to heal the wounds of
Pop Art and even take-up against the
cynicism of his approach. And if, like that
wanted to Figuration Narrative with the
manufactured object, painting by Pop
found his share of humanity, and thereby
the meaning of his vocation?

Darling of his time, the artist is always the
son of the culture he receives. But as a
son, too, he captures images and values
given to it, and that the judge in his turn,
asserting his own power against them.
Not quite servile nor truly independent,
the imagination Kahouadji contours to
contemplate it, while giving them the
value of a symbol or an archetype.
Whether in his painting "When We Were
Kings", or even in the other entitled "Left
without a defense, different levels of
meaning and narrative overlap, forcing
the viewer to question the idea that 'he
thought he could get the picture.
Something resists literal interpretation,
without the implicit meaning of each

En una atmósfera inquietante, una cebra

One thing is certain: without this floating

 VJ Opie is a performance and video
artist based in Paris, France.

Opie Boero Imwinkelried's work

explores language and technology
with a focus on the ancient Roman
and Greek worlds in connection with
contemporary society.

Opie created the concept of RTLC

(Real Time Live Cinema) a hybrid of
cinema and theater based on chroma
keying techniques and live
improvisation. Opie also works with a
range of computer technologies
applied to live performances including
augmented reality and motion
tracking.

Opie has shown video works at

several international venues including
the European Media Art Festival
(EMAF), Clermont-Ferrand
Videoformes, British Film Institute’s
London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival,

Opie's video art career started in Argentina in the 90's and continued at the renown Media
Study Department at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Opie's video performance trajectory started in the late 90s, performing with self-authored
Flash movies. Back then, Opie performed at several venues, mostly in the United States,
including Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, Squeaky Wheel Buffalo Media Resources,
and scholarly conferences such as Pacific Rim Classical Studies Conference.

More recently, Opie has been performing in Paris at clubs such as the Opa,Batofar, Yono,
and 4 Elements as well as at art houses such as La Société de Curiosités and more recently
featured at the Apple Store Louvre and the Nuit Blanche, Paris.

What first attracted you to video as a
medium?
Initially, the power of the medium to
communicate to large audiences. When
video became digital, my relationship to
video became even more solid due to my
addiction to technology.
Why did you move to France from the
USA ?
I decided to move to Europe because I
thought it was more open to a diversity of
expressions and movements than the USA.
In the USA, it is not as easy to access
works from countries other than the USA.
For instance, in the mid 90s I used to live in
Houston, TX, the fourth largest US city, and
there were only two or three venues
screening foreign movies. I was very lucky,
though, to have lived in Buffalo, NY, my
hometown by adoption. In Buffalo, there
are several art houses that put together truly
diverse and inspiring programs including
Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center and
Squeaky Wheel (Buffalo Media Resources).
Buffalo and the Media Study Department at
the State University of New York at Buffalo,
as you may know, are the cradle of
experimental video. So, Buffalo was good,
but Paris is better...

video como un medio?
Inicialmente, el poder del medio para
comunicarse a grandes audiencias. Cuando el

Can you describe the concept of Real
Time Live Cinema?
RTLC produces a movie in real time
responding to a current obsession with
immediacy; i.e. to obtain immediate
results. Using a green screen as a
backdrop, the RTLC director sits between
the green and the white screen where the
final movie is projected. In front of the
director, there is the public giving their
backs to the director, and in front of the
public the white screen showing the final
movie. Behind the director, there is a
camera shooting the actors who play in
front of the green backdrop. The RTLC
director chroma keys the signal from the
camera, extracting the actors, and
simultaneously mixes that image with
images from a bank of already shot
videos. The actors improvise in response
to the prearranged shots projected by the
director. The musician or musicians also
improvise following the video, just as in
silent movies.
¿Puede describir el concepto de Real Time
Live Cinema?
RTLC produce una película en tiempo real en
respuesta a una obsesión actual con la
inmediatez, es decir, para obtener resultados
inmediatos. Usando una pantalla verde como
fondo, el director RTLC se sitúa entre el
verde y la pantalla blanca donde se proyecta
la película final. Frente al director, no hay la
entrega pública de espaldas a la directora, y
frente a la opinión pública la pantalla blanca
que muestra la película final. Detrás del
director, no hay un disparo de la cámara a los
actores que juegan frente al telón de fondo
verde. El director RTLC llaves de croma la
señal de la cámara, la extracción de los
actores, y al mismo tiempo que la imagen se
mezcla con imágenes de un banco de videos
ya filmados. Los actores improvisan en
respuesta a los disparos preestablecido,

You work with technologies including
augmented reality and motion
tracking. Can you describe how you
utilise these in your work ?
I utilize the typical
FLARToolkit/Papervision Augemnted
Reality (AR) to visualize 3D objects and
video, and am experimenting and testing
so as to fully incorporate it in my
performance work mainly as
scenography. I also use AR in an older
and more primitive version also called
Video Projection Mapping or Augmented
Architecture/Augmented Sculpture.
Concerning motion tracking, I work with
an open source software called Animata,
developed in Hungary with support from
The Kitchen. Motion tracking, mainly the
one that uses only a camera without the
need of sensors nor infrared, is an
extremely rich technology for the
performing arts. The entire body or parts
of the performer's body can be linked to
a certain object or objects to be
projected on the screen. The software,
with the aid of a camera/eye, traces that
movement and moves the digital object
accordingly. For instance, if we link a
hand to a butterfly, then whenever the
performer moves their hand, the butterfly
moves tracing the movement of the
hand.
Usted trabaja con tecnologías que incluyan
la realidad aumentada y el seguimiento de

estos en su trabajo?
Yo utilizo la típica FLARToolKit / Papervision
Realidad Augemnted (AR) para visualizar

código abierto llamado Animata, desarrollada
en Hungría, con el apoyo de La Cocina. de

extremadamente rica de las artes escénicas.
Todo el cuerpo o partes del cuerpo del artista
intérprete o ejecutante puede estar vinculada a
un determinado objeto u objetos para ser
proyectado en la pantalla. El software, con la

que el movimiento y mueve el objeto digital en

Can you describe a typical setup
(hardware / equipment) for your video
performances ?
My setup varies depending on the
technology I use. For instance, at the end
of the month, I will perform at the Apple
Store Louvre. I will do a RTLC performance
and will be bringing my two MacBook Pros,
my HD camera, and certainly my large
green backdrop with stands and lights.
Apple will provide the LCD screens to
display the final movie. The musician
Laurent Chambert will be playing with his
MacBook Pro.
Who or what inspires you ?
French philosopher Luce Irigaray is one of
my main sources of inspiration. Technology
inspires me. The poems written by Sulpicia,
the only extant female poet from ancient
Rome, Luis Bunuel, Jean Vigo, Jacques
Tati, Rainer Fassbinder, as well as many
movies by Werner Herzog inspire me. The
snow and snowcaves (not igloos!).
¿Puede describir una instalación típica
(hardware / equipo) para tus actuaciones
en video?
Mi configuración varía en función de la
tecnología que uso. Por ejemplo, al final del
mes, voy a realizar en el Louvre Apple Store.
Voy a hacer una actuación RTLC y llevará
mis dos MacBook Pro, la cámara de alta

How have web 2.0 sites such as Youtube,
Vimeo, Twitter, etc., proved useful to you
as an artist? Do you find any
disadvantages to these sites?
You forgot Facebook! It's actually through
the little videos I post on FB that I got a
personal invitation to submit to one of the
largest festivals in the world. This would
have never had happened if I did not have
that FB account. Social Media and Web 2.0
are powerful and useful tools that artists
should use. I have a rule: as important as it
is to perform, it is to document, and as
important as it is to document, it is to
aggregate or broadcast through Social
Media/Web 2.0 platforms. So, I do not
perform without documenting nor document
without aggregating. YouTube is a great
service, extremely reliable and gradually
improving quality as well as interface. I
youtube pretty much every video I have.
This has proved to be a very efficient way
for me to share and promote my work.
I am Social Media/Web 2.0 evangelist, so
no disadvantages!
¿Cómo han sitios Web 2.0 como Youtube,
Vimeo, Twitter, etc, resultó útil para usted
como artista? ¿Encuentras alguna
desventaja a estos sitios?
Facebook te olvidó! En realidad es a través de
los videos poco he puesto en FB que tengo
una invitación personal a someterse a uno de
los mayores festivales del mundo. Esto nunca
habría sucedido si yo no tenía esa cuenta FB.
Social Media y Web 2.0 son poderosas y útiles
herramientas que los artistas deben utilizar.
Tengo una regla: tan importante como lo es
llevar a cabo, es el documento, y tan
importante como lo es documentar, es agregar
o difusión a través de medios de comunicación
social / Web 2.0 plataformas. Así que no
realizan sin documentar ni documento sin
agregación. YouTube es un gran servicio, muy
fiable y poco a poco mejora de la calidad, así
como interfaz. Yo youtube casi todos los video
que tengo. Esto ha demostrado ser un medio
muy eficaz para mí compartir y promover mi
trabajo.

Do you have an advice for aspiring
video performance artists?
I would advise people to take over, not
be afraid, and not to wait till someone
tells them what to do and where to do it.
I think artists should go ahead and
perform and avoid getting tangled in
bureaucracy. We need to be creative
not only in our artwork but also in the
ways of promoting our work and making
a performance happen. There are a
million ways to go about this. I think the

Social Media/Web 2.0 are really good
tools to promote artwork, mainly for
performing artists since we need to
advertise events. These tools should
also help an artist get organized, trace
their own history, share their work, and
many more things yet to be discovered.

Yo aconsejaría a las personas a asumir el control,
no tengas miedo, y no esperar hasta que alguien

product itself. Santos de Goma is one
example. A project involving musicians with
a brilliant career, which overlap in a range
of tastes and influences evident hopefully
serve to give a brilliant result, accurate and
wise.
They say that the long and painstaking
process is something Cuban. That is, from
a theoretical advance (musical culture is
obvious, but it does not become empty or
pretentious erudition) and a sort of cut up
technique of collage unconscious in which
there is a taste of the best George
Harrison, the most successful Kinks or the
Who most inspired.
Songs from these will cheer your day, the
humming at the wheel, muttering the
chorus, of course, with that touch of
elegance no imposters (they inadvertently
leave), the worshipers of Gainsbourg have
also heard Kraftwerk and Pierre Henry .

es evidente pero no cae en una erudición
vacua ni pretenciosa) y con un una especie de
técnica del cut up, de collage inconsciente en
el que hay un regusto del mejor George
Harrison, de los Kinks más acertados o de los
Who más inspirados.
Canciones de esas que te alegran el día, de
las de tararear al volante murmurando el
estribillo, por supuesto, con ese toque de
elegancia no impostada (a ellos les sale sin
querer) de adoradores de Gainsbourg que
también han oído a Kraftwerk o Pierre Henry.
Light music ... yes, but that is not talking
about superficial. To get to the essence, that
no charges have to know how to
deconstruct and know enough to unlearn.
They know it. Whether Conde (on vocals,

programming) as Isra (on guitar, vocals),

Daniel Altarriba. All this with a bundle by
Nacho Gabrielli. Be careful, simple, with
charming ... with light, as recommended by

Música ligera… sí, pero con esto no

esencia, a esa ausencia de cargas hay que
saber cómo deconstruir y saber lo suficiente
como para desaprender lo aprendido. Ellos
lo saben. Tanto Conde (a la voz, guitarra
acústica, teclados y programaciones), como
Isra (en la guitarra y coros), Claudio (batería
y coros), Álvaro (bajo y coros) o Tristán
(guitarra y coros) han demostrado más que
de sobra que les sobra talento, pero es muy
de agradecer que tengan el savoire faire de
no demostrarlo todo el rato.
También llama la atención que una era en la
que el disco empieza a ser un objeto casi
arqueológico, en la que algunas grabaciones
da la impresión de que están capturadas
con el grabador del Iphone, se hayan
preocupado de buscar un productor, Pachi
Delgado (Alis) o de entrar en Sonoland para
que el mastering lo hiciera Daniel Altarriba.
Todo ello con un envoltorio a cargo de
Nacho Gabrielli. Cuidado, sencillo, con
charme… con luz para, como recomiendan
ellos, alejar las sombras.

I am 23 years old, I live in Italy (a shit), I
study sociology in Firenze (on 11 June I
had my last exams). I love photography
since I was a child, but i redescover this
passion 4 years ago, because I think that
there was a revival of my artistic talent...it
had been stifled by the constraints that
cause life events...in the future I'd like to
use photography for social use if it's
possible (too)^^...
I love music, observing, nature, writing,
reading, art...all forms, piercings, travel,
free parties, thinking, speaking, listening,
eating, dreaming, all my senses :)
Last winter I had to do my first exposition
in Rome,but I never did it...there were
problems between the organisers and the
social center (location)... after time the
organisers contacted me and I didin't go
because I had many exams and maybe
because I'm insecure myself too!
I must find the strength to fly…

Tengo 23 años de edad, vivo en Italia (una
mierda), que estudios de sociología en Firenze
(el 11 de junio tuve mi última exámenes). Me
encanta la fotografía desde que era un niño,

Don Letts is an unsung hero of British
music. “Superstonic Sound: The Rebel
Dread” is a documentary about the Letts
family legacy that mirrors the history of
BASS in the UK from Dub, Reggae and
Punk to 80s pop, Hip Hop and Dubstep; a
musical, cultural and personal link
between past and present.
From his early days growing up as a
British born black man in a deeply divided
city, Don tells of his struggle to find his
identity as a dread in punk clothing.
Throughout his life, music was the
inspiration that showed him the way,
much as it did for a multicultural London,
also struggling to define itself.

first generation of British born black
but back in my day I was really out
there on my own.”

Saint Ledger Letts was a Jamaican
immigrant of the 1950s Windrush
generation. Invited to Britain to help
rebuild the country after the war and do
the jobs that white people didn’t want, the
newly arrived Caribbean immigrants soon
found themselves discriminated against
and marginalized by British society,
culminating in Enoch Powell’s infamous
1968 “Rivers of Blood” speech. Aside
from hard work and a snappy dress
sense, Saint Ledger brought with him the
“Duke Letts Superstonic Sound System”.
Men like Don’s father introduced
Jamaican music to the UK for the first
time and with it a heavy BASS accent
hitherto absent in British music but
henceforth the sound that would underpin
and in many ways define British sound for
the next 50 years.
Don Letts grew up in Brixton, immersed
not only in Dub and Reggae but also the
likes of James Brown – “Sing It Loud,
I’m Black and Proud”. In the context of
Stop and Search laws, the National Front
and KBW – Keep Britain White - sprayed
across the walls of London, Don became
the lone Rebel Dread crossing musical
and cultural boundaries between black
and white. In an era of mass frustration
amongst the children of immigrants and
disaffected, disenfranchised, working
class whites, Punk music emerged to
challenge the establishment. Don became
DJ at the first Punk club, the legendary
Roxy in Covent Garden, and in between
live Punk sets he played hard core Dub-
Reggae and fortunately for him, “the
Punk kids liked it. They liked the
obvious anti-establishment vibe, they
liked the BASS lines and they didn’t
mind the weed either”.

“When you saw the Clash onstage,
they were like 4 sticks of dynamite and
you didn’t just wanna be a fan, you
wanted to get involved”.
Whilst working at the Roxy, Don was
inspired by the Punk D.I.Y attitude to pick
up a super 8 camera and he became a
filmmaker. His first documentary, “The
Punk Rock Movie” was the firs t
documentary to capture the Punk spirit.
He went on to make 30 films and
documentaries and over 300 music
videos for the likes of Elvis Costello, The
Clash and Bob Marley.
Don accompanied the Clash in ‘81 on
their New York tour to film “The Clash on
Broadway”. Whilst there, he was
introduced to the Rap music scene and
once again got a front row seat at the
birth of a new musical and social
movement. The likes of Africa
Bambaataa, The Sugar Hill Gang and
Grandmaster Flash opened for the Clash
and for many downtown, this was the first
time they had heard what was going on in
their own backyard.
In 1985 Don was invited to join Big Audio
Dynamite with Mick Jones (formerly of the
Clash), a pioneering pop band that in
many ways defined the 80s, fusing
Reggae BASS lines with Rock guitar and
Hip Hop beats. The same year, Don’s son
Jet was born.

his family was falling apart. A messy
divorce isolated him from his son and they
didn’t talk for several years. Now, most of
those bridges have been mended and the
two have a good relationship; sharing
experiences, sharing music and even

Jet, now 24, is trying to make it as a DJ
and producer of Dubstep – the latest
sound in British music and a direct
descendant of Dub, Reggae and Hip Hop.
If Reggae was black music and Punk was
about white guys emulating black music,
Dubstep is perhaps the first true
combination of black and white musical
and cultural traditions in today’s post-racial
London.
Nowadays, Don has a BBC radio show
and still DJs regularly around the world.
He’s still making great films and
documentaries and in 2000, he won a
Grammy for “The Clash: Westway to the
World”. After 50 years, he’s still at the
frontline of musical and cultural revolution
but what happened to that revolution?

has been an integral part of British music
for over 50 years. Their story IS the story
of BASS in British music. “Superstonic
Sound” is a documentary told by Don Letts
which follows the massive social and
musical changes that have taken place in
London since the first Jamaican
immigrants moved to Brixton in the 1950s.
During that time Don himself has been
right at the heart of those changes giving
the viewer the inside story and more
importantly, the feeling and emotional
connection that can only come from one
who was there.

footage and a kick ass soundtrack,
“Superstonic Sound” is one of those rare
animals that can entertain and inform in
equal measure. However, it is not just a
historical documentary nor just a music film
but a cultural journey that would change
British society forever. Following Jet Letts
as he DJs and produces Dubstep, we are
also following the future of BASS and the
future of British music in the 21st Century.

Don Letts’ reputation has been firmly
established in both the film and music
world by a substantial body of work, from
the late 70’s through the 80’s, 90’s and well
into the millennium. His work has been
exhibited in The Kitchen N.Y.C, The
Institute of Contemporary Art, The N.F.T in
London and was honoured at Brooklyn’s
BAM festival. In March 2003 he won a
Grammy for his documentary ‘Westway To
The World’.
He came to notoriety in the late 70’s as the
DJ that single handedly turned a whole
generation of punks onto reggae. It was
whilst DJing at the first punk club ‘The
Roxy’ in 1977, that Don adopted the punk
D.I.Y ethic and began to make his first film
‘The Punk Rock Movie’. Shot on Super-
8mm, it is the first documentary on the U.K
punk scene featuring The Sex Pistols, The
Clash and many others. This led to a
period directing over 300 music videos for
a diverse range of artists, including The
Clash, Bob Marley, Elvis Costello and
Beenie Man.

that would look very different from his
illustration work.

and record producer. His work in new
media and experimental film touches
aspects of anthropological study,
philosophic discourse, and contemporary
art. His preferred media extend from

film to video circuit-bending and analog

You mix many different techniques:
graffiti, web-based media ,
performance, paint, etc. - is this
difficult or have you learned to adapt?
My ideas take a wide variety of forms and
because I am working outside of the
commercial art world model. I have had to
learn to do almost everything myself - film
editing, sound mixing, paint, code,
whatever it takes to get the job done.
What is your preferred medium?
I am not sure I have a "preferred
medium". I have been a painter longer
than anything else in terms of creative
output. I tend to use the tools I have at
hand, though every now and then I have
to expand into a new field which requires
a whole new learning curve.

Can you explain "non object oriented"
art?
Art tends to have its value placed on it in a
"commodity" framework. Yet in reality the
value of art is based on ones experience of
it, not its ownership. Over the past 100+
years art has evolved into something that is
able to exist outside of the object, where the
experience of it is capable of being
distributed equally and is no longer
centralized around the object itself. The
entire 'art world' model is based around the
object, who owns the object, and the
glorification of the creator of the object (for
financial gain).
Non object oriented art is a way of creating
experiences without regard for the object. It
is art in the formation of its next stage of
evolution. Only when we can free art from
the commodities market and make it
independent of commerce will we be able to
see art truly transform society.
¿Puede explicar "objeto no orientado" arte?
Arte tiende a tener su valor que se le plantean
en un "commodity" marco. Sin embargo, en
realidad el valor del arte se basa en las
experiencia de ella, no su propiedad. Durante
el arte del pasado año 100 + se ha convertido

Who or what influences you?
I am interested in people who tend to push
at the boundaries of what is accepted. I
really don't care for trends or fashionable
ideas as much as the intention to
continually see things in new ways. The list
of people who have worked in this way is
huge. I usually place American filmmaker
and archivist Harry Smith and 13th century
English mystic Thomas Vaughn high on the
list. But ultimately I am influenced by
everything I experience everyday of my
life.

In addition to your visual work, you
produce music and have collaborated
with artists like Andrew Bird and Magik
Markers. What are the differences
between producing a visual project and
an audio project?
Well, from the perspective of a record
producer there is a huge difference
between audio and visual projects. But
from the viewpoint of a musician/composer
or a painter/filmmaker the difference isn't
that great (at least in my working process).
As a producer I tend to work with very
capable artists who have a firm idea of
what they want. I try to stay out of the way
and keep other factors (labels, press, etc)
out of the artistÕs way so that they can
achieve this vision they are seeking. When
asked what a good record producer does I
usually say, "Make good coffee and know
where to order lunch with a vegetarian
menu (usually ends up being Thai food)."
But as a creative artist (sonic or visual) my
working process is much the same. It
starts with experimentation, pushing at the
tools you have at hand until they yield
results you can work with. Once you have
the basic pieces you start outlining what
will be the work's form. As you work you
are constantly refining and trying to see the
piece from the outside. Eventually a shape
is born out of the process.

siendo comida tailandesa)."
Pero como un artista creativo (sonora o visual)
mi proceso de trabajo es prácticamente el

What inspired the "Remember
Thatcher" piece?
A ton of different things all came
together to make me do the Remember
Thatcher piece. I have been living on
an off in the UK since 2008 and have
been exposed much more directly to
UK politics. My work is generally not
political at all and I usually stay away
from politics in my art, even though I
have very strongly held personal
political opinions.
As I watched the run up to the UK
elections and the massive amount of
dissatisfaction the UK people had with
what was happening in their
government/country I realized that
Labour had reached its end.
People were sick of everything and
Labour was getting the blame. Now, I
am not a big fan of Labour or any
political party (in my opinion those who
would seek public office are by nature
the least likely to benefit the public) but
I could clearly see that the Tories were
going to be handed power out of
frustration with the status quo. I
immediately thought "They should
remember Thatcher" and all of her "I
will change things" posturing.
The damage she did to UK
industry/education/ and culture is
unparrelled. But I realized many young
voters in this country don't remember
her at all.

At the same time I grew up as a kid in
the US in the 80s I read a ton of British
comic books. (writers like Moore,
Gaiman, Delano, and Morrision) I have
this recurring background image that
haunted me that is a picture of a poster
of Thatcher where the ink had bled and
she looked like a zombie or vampire. I
don't remember which comic it was from
but I thought that a poster of Thatcher,
something iconic to remind people of her
role in the disastrous 80's economy, was
something that needed doing. So I
spread a couple of hundred around
London, plus a bunch of people in cities
other than London printed out the
posters themselves and pasted them up
around polling booths.

Are there plans for any more graffiti-
based “ad bombings”?
My work keeps coming back into contact
with these ideas, certainly. I feel strongly
that advertising (both billboard and web) is
robbing us of our visual environment. We
are no longer able to choose what we see.
Billboards display all kinds of things that
the average person has no power to
control. ItÕs as if the urban landscape has
been directly sold to corporations who use
it to sell us whatever they tell us we need.
I feel that art can be injected into this
framework like a virus. It can use the same
tools of media propaganda and marketing
that proliferate in our visual landscape as
weapons against the commercialization of
creativity and the wholesale theft of the
visual landscape itself. Taking back the
city, so to speak.
Can you tell us about your work with
Beta Sound?
Beta Sound is part of a larger project I
started in the late 1990's. It was one of the
very first web based record labels. To this
day it offers its entire catalog free on the
web. Artists like Keefe Jackson, Control R
Workshop, Derek Bailey, Noel Achote, and
dozens more. In the 90s I realized that the
entire model for the record industry was
dying. Most of the music I listened to was
of the very experimental variety. Stuff with
a hardcore following but not commercial at
all. So I started asking around for work that
wouldn’t work on a label. Ideally I was also
looking for work that was longer than the
cd format allows for. Big drones, things of
that nature though very little of it
materialized. Now the label is sort of a
static catalog I keep planning to get back
to someday.

When did your interest in Kabbalah
and mysticism first appear?
Age 11 is the first memory I have of
reading anything abou t
mysticism/occult, though I had
experiences much earlier that I just
didn't have any language to describe.
By my mid teens I was reading all of the
basics, Crowley, Levi, Barret, Carroll,
Scholem, Waite. In my early 20s I
studied kabbalah and practiced vodoun
in Chicago. All of these experiences
inform my work. It is the underlying
aspect of all my creative practices, this
individual spiritual self-expression.
What Crowley would call "scientific
illuminism."

Your video "Hadit" is based on the
book "Dweller on the Threshold".
Can you explain a little about the
video and what you were trying to
achieve?
The Dweller on the Threshold is a
concept first given that name by English
author and mystic Bulwer Lytton in his
novel Zanoni. Lytton saw the Dweller as
a being of immense power that guarded
the gate to the beyond. Rudolph Steiner
would write extensively on the concept
of the dweller, as would Crowley. The
Dweller on the Threshold is a series of
films I have been working on for the
past couple of years. Hadit is the
second form that the Dweller takes,
Chronozon being the first. I have rough
versions of several other films that are
awaiting soundtracks or final editing.
These films are like meditation tools.
Each one tunes you into a different
mental space. I have been working on
the use of transcendental cinema as a
tool for conscious expansion for about
10 years. A program with three of my
transcendental films will be showing at
the Barbican as part of an exhibition
called Knowledge of the Hidden in July.

What hardware / software do
you use to create your video
work?
The only software I use is Final
Cut pro for editing (except to
convert it from one file format to
another). Live I never use
computers in my video
performances. I perform with a
chain of circuit bent video devices
wired in various feedback loops. I
bend the signal feedback to create
patterns and forms I can control.
Limitless colour and tone without
a video source.

Equinox Festival ?

The jury is still out on the future of
the Equinox Festival. On the one
hand, it was a complete success.
We managed to bring together a
historic lineup of world-renowned
occultists, philosophers and
theorists with astonishing artists,
musicians and performers. The
crowd had an exceptional time and
history was made in ways that are
still just coming out via
collaborations and relationships
that were built through the festival.
In that way the fest may not be
repeatable, several people have
said to me since the fest that they
thought it was the "Woodstock of
the occult".

On the other hand we lost tons of

money and basically paid out of
pocket to make all of this happen
with a huge personal financial loss.
But the temptation to try again, to
push it even further is there. It’s
just a matter of the right elements
falling into place.

Upfest was amazing. Bristol is an amazing
town and I had an incredible time. I painted
a 50 square meter parking lot sized piece
in 4 hours. The people were great and the
level of art was astonishing. So many
brilliant people in one place doing what
they love to do.
Where do you see your work
developing in the future?
The shape of my work, all of these different
and seemingly disparate fields of thinking
are centered around my desire to see art
break free of the current restricts placed
upon it by the art world model. Art has the
ability to truly change the world, but as
long as it’s just something that people can
buy and sell it will never be free to make
real change occur.

world and those who see that art is not

against corporate greed, old money, and a
100 year old cabal of art world nonsense.

“Punk in Africa” is a feature length
documentary, to be co-produced by
Meerkat Media (Johannesburg,
South Africa) and Bohemian Lion
Productions and Peligroso
Productions (Prague, Czech
Republic).
The project is currently in the research
and development stage. The producers
have begun to make contacts, conduct
research regarding the four countries
(South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia and
Kenya) to assemble archival and audio
materials and have already conducted
numerous interviews with notable figures
representing all different eras of the
development of punk rock and related
sub-cultures in Southern Africa.
“Punk in África” es un largometraje

The release of their debut EP “the Last
Round” in 2007 showcased the beginnings
of the band, working class realities, the
energy of raw street punk rock and the
atmosphere of family and brotherhood. The
follow up single “Lights Out”, off the
upcoming album “The Streets of
Johannesburg”, paints a picture of their
hometown, the band voices a love for the
city and calls to the people to come home.

This Biennial brings together the most
relevant contemporary artists from Africa
and is a meeting place where people
related to the culture around the world are
interested in and traveling to Dakar to
connect with works of art from the African
continent. In this edition, David Palacin,
Igor Torres and Oscar Martin have been
invited as visible leaders and ambassadors
of contemporary creation in Burgos,
Castilla Leon, Spain.
In addition to showcasing their latest
works, they work for a month in their
respective disciplines in residence, sharing
their creative processes, techniques and
records with visitors and other artists of the
Biennale to imbibe the culture of Africa and
aesthetic records, formal conceptual and

implicación con la cultura, en especial con el
arte plástico, pues han habilitado un edificio
como centro de arte y residencia para artistas.

Conocimos también a diferentes artistas
senegaleses, y les explicamos nuestro proyecto
de intercambio y conexión, mostrándose
interesados y participativos. La RTS, televisión

les interesa tanto el proyecto que deciden ir a la
inauguración de Ductos para documentarlo.

Un ducto que al principio no contenía el
proyecto, pero como todo este proyecto ha ido
creciendo como una bola de nieve, ha sido una
buena suma y otra gran oportunidad ductiana y
ha servido para confirmar nuestro espíritu de
comunicación, expansión y promoción de
artistas burgaleses.

filosofía de la inauguración y su presentación se
basó en que las obras que se mostraban habían
sido encontradas en un Ducto cósmico que nos
había permitido realizar unos hallazgos de obras
realizadas por nosotros en el año 2045, lo que
nos ha facilitado disponer las salas interiores a
modo de cueva. Para entrar en la sala se cada
visitante se debía colocar un casco como
protección y les facilitábamos una lámpara para
poder observar los trabajos, como si de pinturas
rupestres se tratara.

Según pasan los días nos vamos africanizando
y a la hora de las compras y las relaciones con
los vecinos y con los habitantes de Dakar, se
produce un gran cambio. Al principio era un
trato amable de turistas, intentando sacar
provecho de nosotros. Nada que sea diferente a
la costa del sol en España y los turistas que la
visitan (aparentemente ya no ocurre, pero a mi
me a ocurrido en algún viaje reciente). Ahora,
sin embargo, es un trato de cariño de vecinos y
de paisanos. Formamos parte de la vida diaria y
eso nos encanta…

presentar un proyecto de cooperación cultural
con Senegal. Estamos trabajando en este
momento en darle forma y contamos con el
apoyo de la Embajada de España en Senegal
para su presentación a los socios europeos.

Dakar, tras una reunión mantenida con él, le ha
parecido interesante la propuesta de hacer una
escultura que simbolice la AMISTAD (Amitie en
Francés) que sirva como encuentro de los

Dentro de la filosofía “Ductos” de comunicación,
se agrega al proyecto: Gastro-Music (Jesus
Iñiguez-Cutxo Sound Sistem y Alberto Monja-
Almendro Sound Flowers). Esta propuesta
combina la música producida en directo y
también una selección cuidada de músicas de
mundo, estas composiciones se escuchan como
maridaje de ciertos platos que cocinan en
directo tanto Cutxo como Almendro. Son los que
abren la inauguración del evento y a la vez van
a realizar un trabajo a partir de recetas
senegalesas que van transformar según su
sentido gastronómico. Posteriormente se
incluirán en el catalogo de la participación en la
bienal, las recetas senegalesas y las resultantes
de la creatividad de Gastro-music.
Como Ductos-Music han formado parte de la
Casa-Ductos: Jerry González, Jorge Pardo,
Ranky, Caramelo,… acompañados por Juan
Laguna, director de la película La princesa de
África (después de su actuación en el Festival
de JAZZ de San Louis) y también Juanma, Javi
y Fito del Ballet de María Carrasco, que
realizaron una coreografía en la sala ultravioleta
de Igor Torres, que ha permitido un documento
visual increíble, que muestra su creatividad y
su capacidad de mimetización con el trabajo
plástico de Torres.

cultura: artistas plásticos, músicos, escritores,

The Monegros Festival hit Spain last
month, bringing more than 22 hours of
techno, minimal, dubstep, hip hop and
more to the Monegros desert between
Madrid and Barcelona.
Now in it's 16th year, Monegros is a
40,000-person party that's hailed as
Spain's biggest rave, and this year's event
included plenty of DJs : Richie Hawtin,
Luciano, Adam Beyer, Mathew Jonson,
Dave Clarke to name a few, plus a back-
to-back session by Marco Carola and
Loco Dice. Other highlights included
Detroit luminary Jeff Mills, DJ Rush and
subheavy acts like Caspa, Joker and The
Bug. Live performances also came from
Laurent Garnier, Buraka Som Sistema,
Popof, Technasia, Pendulum and Bloody
Beetroots Death Crew 77.

Rites of Passage is a festival that celebrates creativity as a means to connect. By
celebrating the art of tattoo, music, visual art and environmental awareness, we're creating a

ancient world. In doing so, it celebrates not only the creative energy that links us to
ourselves and each other as a modern tribe - it enables us to explore how we can reconnect
with our natural environment in the same respectful ways as our ancestors, and re-establish
the balance our Earth needs for its survival while we go about living our modern lives.

The Rites of Passage Festival is aiming to be as eco-friendly as possible, showcasing

everything from organic locally grown produce to eco-friendly tattoo supplies. It's our firm
belief that it's possible to tread lightly without missing out on any of the indulgences we've
come to depend on in our lives - and it's for this reason that 100% of the profits made from
the festival will go towards buying agricultural land, which will be replanted with native
rainforest.

We also believe that by fostering a deeper sense of community we'll be on our way to a
more sustainable future - so we're celebrating Australia's traditional landowners and showing
our respect to the rich cultural diversity that forms the rich, dynamic fabric of this country.

Born out of a flash inspiration and musical
necessity, the concept of Monosurround
was first formed in 1999 in Berlin’s
notorious Kreuzberg district from the
restless minds of Ramtin Asadolahzadeh
and Erik Schaeffer.
Monosurround wasted no time ,
immediately jumping into the fray with
production on a pair of film soundtracks as
well as a daring multi-piece live
performance. They were driven by a desire
to constantly re-define an ever-evolving
and vibrant sound of modern electronic
music. The following years saw Ramtin
and Erik refine their sound and live
performance, becoming a dynamic duo on
stage, regularly providing the spark for
dancefloors across the world with both
their live sets and burgeoning DJ team.
Unprecedented studio success paralleled
their jet setting lifestyles, with the anthemic
“I Warned You Baby” becoming a favorite
of the summer of 2002, finding a home in
both festivals and charts.
