Conocer las ventajas del uso de la geomalla y de la aplicacin tcnica de
la misma, como alternativa para el refuerzo de la estructura del
pavimento flexible, en la red vial de Guatemala.

El agua a usar en las operaciones debe de ser clara, libre de aceites, sales,
cidos, lcalis, azcar, materia vegetal y dems sustancias que afecten el
desempeo de la sub-rasante.
1.2. Sub-base
este hinchamiento se

lquido inferior a treinta y cinco por ciento y su ndice plstico no mayor de seis
por ciento.
Ya que la funcin principal de la sub-base es servir como capa de drenaje, el
material e emplearse debe de ser granular, y la cantidad de material fino, en
este caso limo y arcilla, que pase por el tamiz nmero doscientos, no debe de
ser mayor del ocho por ciento.
La porcin que pasa por el tamiz 0.425 mm, no debe tener un ndice de
plasticidad AASHTO T-90, mayor de seis ni un limite lquido, AASHTO t-89,
mayor de veinticinco, determinados ambos, sobre una muestra preparada en
hmedo, AASHTO, T-146. 4
Cuando existan varios bancos de materiales como alternativas para el uso
del mismo como material de sub-base, dentro de las condiciones normales de
acarreo, se debe utilizar el material que tenga un mayor valor soporte, menor
porcentaje que pase por el Tamiz 0.0075 mm, menor ndice de plasticidad y
mayor equivalente de arena, para as garantizar la calidad de la capa de subbase.

Se debe efectuar un ensayo de valor soporte del suelo por cada quinientos
metros cbicos producidos, al iniciar la explotacin de cada banco, hasta y
llegar a tres mil metros cbicos, y posteriormente un ensayo por cada tres mil
metros cbicos colocados.
Se debe realizar un ensayo de granulometra, por cada quinientos metros
cbicos de los primeros tres mil producidos al iniciar la explotacin de cada
banco, seguidamente se debe efectuar un ensayo cada tres mil metros cbicos
colocados de material de sub-base.
Con relacin a la compactacin se establece una tolerancia del 3% con
respecto al porcentaje de compactacin especificado, para aceptacin de la
capa de sub-base. Efectuar un ensayo representativo por cada cuatrocientos
metros cuadrados de cada una de las capas que se compacten. La densidad de
campo de preferencia no debe de efectuarse a una distancia menor de veinte
metros en sentido longitudinal, sobre la superficie compactada que se este
controlando. De preferencia, el control de compactacin debe realizarse entre
las orillas interiores de hombros, a una distancia mayor de un metro del borde
de la sub-base y siguiendo un orden alternado: de derecha, centro e izquierda
del eje.
La conformacin de la superficie de la sub-base terminada, debe verificarse
mediante la utilizacin de un cordel delgado, atado en ambos extremos a la
punta de dos varillas de igual altura, cada una de estas se coloca directamente
sobre trompos de construccin contiguos, transversal y longitudinalmente,
verificando con una regla graduada la altura del cordel, no aceptando
irregularidades mayores de quince milmetros respecto a la cota de superficie
correspondiente de la sub-base.
El valor mximo de deflexin aceptable para la superficie de la capa de subbase, no debe ser mayor de dos milmetros, respecto a un punto dado, a una
distancia no mayor de tres metros, en cualquier direccin, medido con la viga
Benkelman.
1.3. Base
o La fraccin del material que pase por el tamiz cuarenta, debe de tener
un lmite lquido menor del veinticinco por ciento y un ndice plstico
inferior a seis.
o Un CBR superior a 70 %, cuando se cumple el 95 % de la densidad
mxima sea obtenida del ensayo AASHTO T- 180 (proctor
modificado).

Al igual que en las otras capas, el material de base granular, tiene que estar
exento de impurezas, tales como, materia vegetal, basura, terrones de arcilla o
sustancias que incorporadas puedan causar fallas en la estructura del
pavimento.

Previamente a la compactacin de la capa de base granular, se debe
humedecer adecuadamente el material. Esto se puede efectuar en la planta,
antes de ser acarreado y tendido, procediendo en este caso con la
compactacin inmediata. En el caso en que el material se humedezca despus
de tendido, debe mezclarse hasta lograr un humedecimiento homogneo, que
permita la compactacin del mismo, el riego del agua puede efectuarse
simultneamente al momento de realizar la mezcla del material.

Existen trece clases distintas de vehculos para el clculo de los ejes
equivalentes de carga:
o Motocicletas

o Otros vehculos de dos ejes y cuatro ruedas
o mnibus
o Camiones simples de dos ejes
o Camiones simples de tres ejes
o Camiones simples de cuatro o ms ejes
o Camiones semi remolques de cuatro o menos ejes

o Camiones con acoplado de cinco o ms ejes
o Camiones con acoplado de seis ejes
o Camiones con acoplado de siete o ms ejes
As como la distribucin del tipo de camiones es importante, lo es
tambin la de los pesos, debiendo conocer el peso total del camin y la
distribucin por ejes de este peso. Esto se puede determinar por medio de
estaciones de control de cargas ubicadas en puntos estratgicos a lo largo de la
red vial, logrando de este modo obtener la siguiente informacin:
o Volumen de camiones por cada tipo
o Tasa de crecimiento para cada tipo de camin
o Factores de distribucin por eje, de cada tipo de camin

2.5. Drenajes
La humedad es una caracterstica muy especial de los pavimentos, ya que
esta reviste de gran importancia sobre las propiedades de los materiales que
conforman la estructura de un pavimento flexible, pero sobre todo en el
comportamiento de los mismos. Por tal motivo se hace necesario analizar los
distintos mtodos por medio de los cuales se pretende reducir o eliminar el
agua en la estructura de un pavimento flexible.
La evacuacin del agua en los pavimentos flexibles es considerada como
parte primordial del diseo de carreteras. El exceso de agua en combinacin
con el incremento del volumen de trnsito y de cargas, junto con el transcurrir

Por tal motivo es indispensable encontrar soluciones a los problemas de
humedad en los pavimentos, que consisten bsicamente:
o Prevenir la penetracin del agua dentro del pavimento
o Proveer de drenaje necesario para remover el exceso del agua

Las geomallas pueden ser flexibles de hilos de polister, nylon o bien fibra
de vidrio de alta densidad, fabricados con polietileno de alta densidad

Las geomallas han sido utilizadas con xito como refuerzo de estructuras
granulares en pavimentos flexibles desde el ao de 1980 en Estados Unidos.
Este tipo de refuerzo se ha definido como refuerzo de base, como efecto de
restriccin lateral o de refuerzo de confinamiento, debido a la unin que se
genera en la interaccin del suelo granular con la geomalla. El agregado no
reforzado se desplaza lateralmente bajo las cargas del trfico, causando el
ahuellamiento, y finalmente el fallo de la estructura del pavimento flexible.
Las capas reforzadas con geomalla resisten este movimiento lateral y
brindan un mejor desempeo a largo plazo.

Se han identificado tres tipos de mecanismos de refuerzo fundamental que
suceden al colocar una geomalla dentro de la capa granular, o bien dentro del
sub-rasante y la capa de base granular.

El refuerzo de estructuras granulares en pavimentos flexibles con la
utilizacin de la geomalla se ha definido como refuerzo de confinamiento,
debido al trabe que se genera en la interaccin de suelo granular de la capa de
base con la geomalla.

Para que sta quede bien tensa, se debe desenrollar la geomalla, alinearla y
estirarla en forma manual para eliminar las arrugas. Puede ser necesario,
dependiendo del proyecto, la utilizacin de clavijas o grapas adicionales para
mantener la geomalla en posicin, antes de colocar el material de relleno.

Si se forman surcos debajo de las ruedas de los camiones, no se deben de
nivelar. Los surcos normalmente indican que el relleno es demasiado delgado,
esta demasiado hmedo o no esta bien compactado. Los surcos se deben de
rellenar y compactar, proporcionando un relleno extra en las reas donde se
necesite.
