Medelln es el municipio capital del departamento colombiano de Antioquia, siendo la ciudad

ms poblada del departamento y la segunda del pas.7 Se asienta en la parte ms ancha de la

regin natural conocida como Valle de Aburr, en la cordillera centralde los Andes,
constituyndose como el mayor centro urbano de tal ramal andino. Se extiende a ambas
orillas del ro Medelln -llamado tambin ro Aburr-, que la atraviesa de sur a norte, y es el
ncleo principal del rea metropolitana del Valle de Aburr.8La ciudad tiene una poblacin de
2.464.322 habitantes (2015),2 mientras que dicha cifra, incluyendo el rea metropolitana,
asciende a 3.592.100 personas (2015).2
Fue fundada con el nombre de Villa de Nuestra Seora de la Candelaria de Medelln el 2 de
noviembre de 1675 en el sitio de An, que corresponde actualmente al centro de la ciudad
(zona centro-oriental). Antes de ello, en 1616, se haba erigido un pequeo poblado de
indgenas al que se le dio el nombre de San Lorenzo de Aburr, fundado por el espaol
Francisco Herrera Campuzano, en el sitio en donde hoy se encuentra el parque del Poblado

Medellin is the capital municipality of the Colombian department of Antioquia,

the most populous city of the department and the second country.7 It sits at
the widest part of the natural region known as Valle de Aburr, in the central
Andes, establishing itself as the largest urban center in such Andean branch.
Extends on both sides of the river also -called Aburr- Medellin River, which
crosses from south to north, and is the core of the metropolitan area of the
Valley of Aburr.8 The city has a population of 2,464,322 inhabitants (2015) 2
while this figure, including the metropolitan area totals 3,592,100 people
(2015) .2

(OEA) en el 2008, la Asamblea anual del Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID) en el 2009,
sede de los IX Juegos Suramericanos en el 2010, en el 2011 realiz junto con otras ciudades del
pas el Mundial Sub 20 de ftbol, en 2014 fue sede del Foro Mundial Urbano de la ONU y realizar
en 2015 la Asamblea Mundial de Turismo de la Organizacin Mundial de Turismo (OMT).
Reconocidas ferias, como Colombiatex y Colombiamoda, y consagradas citas culturales, como el
Festival Internacional de Tango, el Festival Internacional de Poesa, el Festival Internacional de Jazz
y la Fiesta del Libro, tienen cita anual en esta ciudad, que es, as mismo, un importante destino
para el turismo de negocios, cultura, naturaleza y salud, importante centro de moda y compras.
Esta ciudad, de la Feria de las Flores, del Desfile de Silleteros y los alumbrados navideos, cuenta
con modernos sistemas de transporte, como el Metro, los Metrocables y el Metropls, y goza de
sus renovadas avenidas, de dos terminales de transporte y dos aeropuertos: uno regional y un
moderno aeropuerto internacional. Los parques biblioteca, abiertos al conocimiento, al disfrute y
al ocio creativo, son smbolo de Medelln, y las Unidades de Vida Articuladas (UVA), centros para
gozar de la recreacin, deporte y cultura, estn ubicadas en diferentes sectores de la zona urbana.

Medellin is presented as the permanent headquarters of symposia and

conferences. They have graced the city events the likes of the XIII Congress of
the Association of Language Academies in 2007, the General Assembly of the
Organization of American States (OAS) in 2008, the annual meeting of the InterAmerican Development Bank (IADB) 2009, host the IX South American Games
in 2010, in 2011 conducted along with other cities the World Under-20 football,

in 2014 hosted the World Urban Forum of the UN and in 2015 the World
Assembly of Tourism World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
Fairs recognized as Colombiatex and Colombiamoda, and consecrated cultural
events such as the International Tango Festival, the International Poetry
Festival, the International Jazz Festival and the Book Festival, have annual
event in this city, which is, likewise, a major destination for business tourism,
culture, nature and health, major fashion and shopping center.
This city, the Flower Fair, Parade Silleteros and Christmas lighting, has modern
transport systems like Metro, the Metrocables and Metropls, and enjoy its
renovated avenues, two transport terminals and two airports: one regional and
a modern international airport. The library parks, open to knowledge,
enjoyment and creative leisure, are a symbol of Medellin, and Units Articulated
Life (UVA) centers to enjoy recreation, sports and culture, are located in
different sectors of the urban area .
