PRESENTACION
albergan a especies propias y algunas endmicas, presentando considerable
alpinus, Zaratornis stresemanni, Oreomanes fraseri, Xenodacnis parina y Poospiza
alticola.
De los artrpodos bentonicos se reportan un total de 5 rdenes con 12 familias;

blanca. Sus lmites polticos, en sentido horario, son el mar de Grau, por el oeste;

futura.

Near-Threatened
The most notable species present is Anairetes alpinus, with an estimated six pairs.
Four of these inhabited the upper, undisturbed forest, and one bird was observed
carrying nesting material. As was the case wherever this species was encountered,
it was observed mostly in pairs which were vocal and active, feeding mostly in the
canopy of the forest.
Leptasthenura yanacensis was also present in large numbers; an estimated 8 pairs
inhabited all parts of the forest, although, like A. alpinus, it was less common where
trees had been removed. Leptasthenura yanacensis also tended to occur in pairs,
gleaning small insects mostly in the inner canopy.
This was the only site where we encountered Gallinago jamesoni, which was heard
displaying nightly above the humid valley-bottom below the forest. The total of 35
species was the lowest recorded; this is not surprising given the size of the forest
and the fairly widespread habitat disturbance. The surrounding habitat was also
purely grassland, which explains the absence of montane scrub generalists found
in most other forests.
The Fixed Species-Total Lists (Graph 2) generated at Tacarpo conformed well to
the logarithmic model. The function plateaus at about 45 species, which is
reasonable given the possibilities for more puna/pajonl birds in the area. We do
not expect that we failed to record any residents of the Polylepis forest due to the
small size of the forested area. The relative abundances as calculated from Fixed
Species-Total Lists (Graph 3) seem representative of the Polylepis forest and
immediately adjacent grasslands. Mecocerculus leucophrys does not approach
Xenodacnis parina in abundance, but was recorded in all but one list due to its
conspicuous nature and uniform occurrence throughout the forest.
At Tacarpo, we worked with 10 nets for a total of 27.3 hours, during which time 30
individuals were caught (Graph 4). Xenodacnis parina is under-represented in mist
net captures, although in other forests we found it to be highly susceptible to capture.
All four Carduelis crassirostris were caught simultaneously; presumably a flock
moved through, resulting in the over-representation.

Gague
Gague is a very large forest of mixed composition below 4000 m elevation and
almost pure Polylepis weberbaueri in the upper sections. Our four days of field
work did not allow for thorough censuses throughout the forest, but we did some
sampling at all elevations. The forest is in a deep valley with a large stream and a
mule track; the areas immediately adjacent to the track have been heavily
modified, but much of the forest is relatively intact. In the lower reaches of the
forest there is extensive agriculture, but some native montane scrub remains.

The Mist Netting data from Gague (Graph 7) shows Xenodacnis parina dominating
the avifauna. This is accurate; it was impossible to avoid this species anywhere in
the forest, particularly in the lower areas of mixed vegetation. The Mist Netting data
as a whole is fairly representative of Gagues common species, probably due to the
relatively large amount of effort: 10 nets were used for a total of 40 hours.

Pacchac
Although one of the most degraded forest we encountered, Pacchayocs birdlife remains
prolific. However, our efforts were concentrated in relatively intact patches of the forest. In
spite of being a fraction of the size of Gague, we recorded four more species at Pacchayoc
in significantly less field time. The core forest is mostly Polylepis weberbaueri, with
extensive Miconia scrub in the surrounding area.

Pumahuain
A large forest in a valley, Pumahuain was poorly-sampled forest due to the logistics
of the field expedition. We were unable to mist net, and thus concentrated on
compiling as complete a species list as possible through field observations. Further
study would almost certainly reveal a greater diversity than we found in our brief
census. The habitat is varied, including pure Polylepis forests, mixed montane
forest and scrub as well as open grassland. The forest has been altered quite
heavily, even in the upper areas where we encountered large areas that had been
burned. In the valley bottom alteration seems less severe but is still extensive.

Chacacmonte
On the slopes above a wide, relatively settled valley, Chacac Monte is a fairly
extensive patch of Polylepis forest. The lower part of the forest is heavily degraded,
but much apparently good habitat remains. Throughout the forest, though, there is
evidence of firewood gathering and animal grazing. Most of the surrounding area is
grazed puna/pajonl with some mixed montane scrub in the remote areas above
the Polylepis forest.

In spite of the apparently poor-quality habitat, Anairetes alpinus is among the most
common birds here. This is interesting because we failed to find it in the more
disturbed areas of the other forests. Clearly its exact habitat requirements remain
113
unknown. We estimate there to be 17 pairs in this small forest. The other dominant species
here was Leptasthenura yanacensis; we estimated 20 pairs. However, beyond those species

The avifauna in the forest was relatively impoverished. All the other species
recorded in the forest itself were ones found in all, or nearly all, other forests.
Notables among them include Atlapetes rufigenis. Laguna Canrash held a large
variety of waterfowl, most notably a large population of Fulica gigantea. Overall,
Canrash provided a large variety of species (54) but a relatively low Ornithological
value (41).
While the approximate total number of species calculated from the Fixed SpeciesTotal Lists (Graph 19) is 80, most of the species to be added would likely be
associated with the lake, bog or puna/pajonl habitats, as we feel we recorded all
residents of the Polylepis forest. Even so, this seems like a generous estimate,
probably tweaked upward by the recording of several new species in the last
couple of lists generated. A more likely total would be 70 to 75. The calculated
relative abundances (Graph 20) for Canrash are complicated by the presence of
the lake; however, the dominance of Sicalis uropygialis is apparent throughout the
area. Note the high positions of Leptasthenura yanacensis and Anairetes alpinus.
At Canrash, we used just 6 nets for a total of 29.3 hours. Nonetheless, we captured
40 individuals representing 13 species. The abundance of Anairetes alpinus is
apparent in these data (Graph 21).

Juproc
Juproc is an important forest for the study because it is one of the closest sites to
the Antamina mine. The forest is owned partly by the community and partly by
private landowners, and is composed of four distinct patches. It is one of the
largest forests we studied, containing Polylepis weberbaueri, Gynoxys sp. and
various other montane shrubs.

We recorded more species at Juprog than at any other forest (58), and it also had
the highest Ornithological Value (58). Among the most interesting were Anairetes
alpinus (present in the highest parts), Zaratornis stresemanni, Atlapetes rufigenis
and Poospiza alticola. Among the species recorded only at Juprog were Anairetes
nigrocristatus and Venilornis fumigatus; both were recorded between 3900 m. and
4000 m..
Possibly due in part to the great diversity of Juprog, our species accumulation
curve did not conform particularly well to the logarithmic model (Graph 22)
compared with many other forests. The projected total of 90 species should
therefore be considered less accurate than those calculated for other sites.
Xenodacnis parina and Zaratornis stresemanni dominate the avifauna, as shown in
the relative abundance calculations (Graph 23). Our observations were focused on
the areas above 4000 m, and species occurring mostly below that elevation may
be somewhat under-represented.
120
Working with 9 nets for 29.3 hours, we captured a total of 51 individuals at Juprog.
As was the case at Tacarpo, Xenodacnis parina is highly under-represented in
these
data
(Graph

Pachapaqui
By far the most common bird here was Xenodacnis parina. We were unable to
reach the highest, and probably most interesting, section of the forest, and
therefore did not record species such as Leptasthenura yanacensis and Anairetes
alpinus; they may occur in remote parts of Pachapaqui. We encountered 3 pairs of
Zaratornis stresemanni.
The Fixed Species-Total Lists (Graph 25) at Pachapaqui reached a total of 40
species, while the projected total for the site is 60. Notable for their abundance
here were Cranioleuca baroni and Carduelis atrata. The relative abundance data
(Graph 26) are a fair representation of the avifauna at Pachapaqui.

Winco
The Huinco forest, along with the adjacent Suitucocha (we consider them as one
for the purposes of this study), is among the most interesting because it contains
three species of Polylepis. Additionally, they are almost completely unaltered by
man, thus offering an opportunity to observe the birdlife in its original state. The
two forests (Huinco and Suitucocha) are very similar with the exception that
Suitucocha is adjacent to a large lake.

Jupaymarca
Consisting of two large and three small patches of Polylepis, the Jupaymarca
forest area also includes a large bog used by the local human inhabitants for
pasture land. There is also extensive scrub (including Lupinus sp. and Senecio sp.)
which provided habitat for a variety of montane scrub generalists.

an over-representation.

Huamanhueque
The Huamanweke Valley contains scattered small patches of Polylepis; the only
forests of significance are isolated and inaccessible high on the sides of the valley.
Two nearby forests were also visited San Pedro (a large forest in an adjacent
valley) and Acoren (a small forest of 4 or 5 hectares).

Most significantly, Anairetes alpinus was encountered throughout, while other birds
recorded included Leptasthura yanacensis, Oreomanes fraseri, Zaratornis
stresemanni and Cranioleuca baroni. This was the only forest where we recorded a
tinamou; Nothoprocta ornata was observed.
Seven mist nets were used for 13.4 hours, catching just three individuals (two
Cinclodes fuscus and one Grallaria andicolus). The projected total species diversity

By combining the Fixed Species-Total Lists from all sites, an estimate of the areas
overall diversity is obtained. Unfortunately, because some forests provided a large
number of new species in a small number of lists, the data (Graph 36) do not
conform well to the logarithmic model. However, a projected total of 110 species is
conservative. Very few of the potential new species would be specifically
associated with Polylepis forests; most would be waterbirds, puna/pajonl species
or montane scrub generalists.
Looking at overall abundances (Graphs 37 and 38), it is clear that Xenodacnis
parina is the most widespread and common species in the Polylepis forests of
Ancash. However, of interest to the research team is the appearance of rare
species such as Leptasthenura yanacensis, Oreomanes fraseri, Cranioleuca
baroni and Zaratornis stresemanni within the 20 most abundant species in the
study area.
Summary of Globally Threatened and Near-Threatened Species
Vultur grphus (Near-Threatened)
146
notable exception was Canrash, where A. alpinus was abundant even in degraded
Polylepis patches. The strongest populations were encountered in Tacarpo,
Yanacocha and Canrash.
Oreomanes
fraseri
(Near-Threatened)
As expected, this species was common in most forests, and was found in each
one. It was nowhere particularly abundant, although among the most common
species at some sites, especially Chacac Monte. It is strongly associated with
Polylepis, but does not require pure stands.
Poospiza alticola (Endangered)
A highly localized and poorly-known species, we found P. alticola to be widespread
but generally uncommon at the study sites. It was generally encountered in mixed
montane scrub/Polylepis habitat, but also did occur in pure Polylepis patches.
Gague, Pumahuain and Juprog were its strongholds; most significantly, we
observed it in hedgerows adjacent to small agricultural plots at Gague, indicating
some tolerance for habitat alteration provided suitable cover is left intact.
Atlapetes rufigenis (Near-Threatened)
This species was encountered fairly regularly, although usually in larger forests
and often in areas of mixed vegetation. It was observed in pure Polylepis
occasionally as well. Of all the Threatened and Near-Threatened species, this
seemed to be the most adaptable, as we encountered it in a variety of scrub and
forest habitats throughout the expedition.
Recommendations
The information gathered during this expedition represents the first ornithological
data from many of these forests. In each forest, we encountered several Globally
Threatened or Near-Threatened species. Although more data on exact population
size and viability are lacking, it seems clear that urgent and effective conservation
action is needed to ensure that these poorly-known species continue to maintain
healthy populations in the region.
Graph 39 shows the actual (not idealized logarithmic) species accumulation curves
for all forests. This comparison reinforces the conclusion that Juprog is the most
diverse forest, closely followed by Jupaymarca and Canrash. However, many
species recorded at Canrash were present only due to the lake the forest itself
was not particularly diverse. In order to select forests most deserving of
conservation, each forests total Ornithological Value is the most important
consideration (see Graph 40). Thus, Juprog is the forest with the most unique
avifauna, closely followed by Yanacocha. The most disturbed forest in the study
was Pachapaqui, and although it had a low Ornithological Value, it is in urgent
need of conservation action. We recommend that the following action be taken as
soon as is feasible:

(Orden
Ephemeroptera);
Limnephilidae
(Anomalocosmoecus),
Helicopsychidae
(Helicopsyche),
Hidropsychidae
(Cailloma)
(Orden
Trichoptera), Corixidae (Orden Hemiptera)

Antonio Raimondi, Mariscal Luzuriaga, Pomabamba, Suhuas, Corongo y Pallasca
Emmons (1996) utilizando ratoneras marca Victor, y trampas Sherman.

Puma concolor, Lycalopex culpaeus, Lagidiun peruanun e Histiotus montanus.
