Berrellez es de tal profundidad qwe hay poco que agregar respwto a mi visita al Departamento de Estudo el 16 de septiembre. Sin embargo, urns pwos puntos de inter&. John Fisher, el nuevo Director de Asuntos AndEnos y del Pacifico, dijo que el Epboiodor Korry est6 pbhamente convencidio de que si Allende ts Presidante no habr6 medias tintas: el p a i s sera contralado por 10s comunis:as. Siguiendo la linea del informe H-8, el Departamento de Estado diio que las fuerzas Allende-Cornunistos se movieron MUY RAPIDAMENTE para tomarse todos 1os.medios de difusi6n posibles, TV, radio, etc.; el diario EL MERCURIO es practicamente la Snica fuerza que est6 pelwndo contra Allende. Previously, he was a Sears Roebuck executive in Latin America, with about 14 years residence in Bogota, Colombia, where he performed as an oiltstatiding merchandiser in the Sears Roebuck joint-effort program i n Latin America. Scars -e -had been knocked out of business daring the 1948 Eogota ricts, and, i n effect, it . was Meyers missioa to restore the companys presence. In that role he pefiformed well. But Meyers Latin America experience was limited to the north coast of South America and Mexico. During the l a s t two and one-half years a t State, for all his great personal charm, elegance and wit on social occasions. he ranks very high as ihe weakest Assistant Secretary in recent times--at l e a s t during m y 22 years of association with the area. He has only secondary o r tertiary relations-with the President, ior example, who from the beginning has relied on his Sational Sacurity Council .
