Introduction
El gas natural recibe este nombre porque se extrae directamente de la naturaleza y llega a su punto de consumo
sin haber experimentado prácticamente ninguna transformación química. Es la energía fósil menos contaminante
y su rendimiento energético es superior al de cualquier otra fuente combustible. Este hecho, añadido a la
expansión de su comercio y la extensión de las redes y sistemas de distribución, hace que su utilización esté
aumentando en todo el mundo
Esta materia orgánica provenía de organismos planctónicos que se fueron acumulando en el fondo marino de
plataformas costeras o en las cuencas poco profundas de estanques, y que fueron enterradas bajo sucesivas capas
de tierra por la acción de los fenómenos naturales. Así, sus compuestos fundamentales –grasas y proteínas– se
descompusieron muy lentamente en ausencia de oxígeno por la actuación bacteriana. Los gases generados, por
diferencia de presiones, ascendieron por las rocas porosas de la corteza terrestre hasta llegar a capas de terreno
impermeable, bajo las que quedaron atrapados originando las grandes bolsas o yacimientos de los que hoy
en día sacamos provecho los humanos. Este proceso es, salvando las distancias, parecido al que tiene lugar
en los vertederos donde tiramos las basuras. La materia orgánica que proviene de los restos
de fruta, verdura o carne, por ejemplo, cuando se descompone, produce un gas de características similares al gas
natural, que debe ser evacuado del vertedero a la atmósfera, mediante una red de tubos de drenaje para evitar que
las emanaciones puedan provocar alguna explosión, o bien almacenarse y aprovecharse como combustible: es el
denominado biogás.

Se denomina gas natural al conjunto de hidrocarburos
gaseosos formados principalmente por el metano, en
proporción superior al 70% que se obtiene de la

naturaleza en los campos petrolíferos acompañando al
crudo del petróleo (gas natural asociado) o
acompañado únicamente por pequeñas cantidades de
otros hidrocarburos o gases (gas natural no asociado)

No existe una teoría rigurosa sobre su formación pero puede

asegurarse que proviene del mismo proceso de formación del
petróleo. Los componentes que pueden acompañar al metano son
hidrocarburos saturados como etano, propano, butano, pentano y
pequeñas proporciones de gases inertes, tales como anhidrido
carbónico, nitrógeno, y, en algunos casos acido sulfhídrico, oxigeno
y hidrogeno

Las políticas de ahorro y racionalización del
consumo de energía de los estados, y la
voluntad internacional de reducir la
contaminación atmosférica, está favoreciendo
la búsqueda de nuevas tecnologías que
permitan un uso más intensivo del gas.
Algunas de las líneas en que están trabajando
las empresas gasistas se centran en la
optimización de los procesos de obtención de
energía eléctrica, en el desarrollo de nuevos
equipos de climatización, y en el
aprovechamiento del gas como carburante en
el sector del transporte.
