RETROFITTING AND SEISMIC
REHABILITATION (RC)

César FAJARDO Research Assistant CISMID (UNI-Peru)
Assessor :
S. SUGANO Professor Emeritus, Hirochima University; Visiting Research Fellow, BRI
Luego del sismo de Kobe (1995) se señala
la necesidad de normar pautas para el
ejercicio de la rehabilitación y
reforzamiento de las estructuras…
En 1996 ‘MOE’ emprende un proyecto de 5
años para el reforzamiento sísmico de
~9,000 escuelas (aprox. ¥ 50,000,000,000)
T = …… Time Index
SD = …… Irregularity Index
F = …… Ductility Index
C = …… Strength Index
BASIC CONCEPT OF SEISMIC EVALUATION : The higher value for "Is", the better
TIME INDEX (T) : This index takes into account the effects of the structural defects
I S = E 0 x SD x T
TIME INDEX (T) : This index takes into account the effects of the structural defects

IRREGULARITY INDEX (SD ) : This index tries to quantify the effects of the shape
I S = E 0 x SD x T

Note : If we simply put some shear walls without any criteria it could mean that the
induced eccentricity probably may affect the structural behavior by incorporating
rotational effects. In this sense, the incorporated shear walls were thought in the
way that the stiffness coordinate () is so close to the center of mass of the system.
Calculation of Stiffness Coordinate due to Retrofitting (first floor)
Detail of the retrofitting (elevation of a typical frame)
Note : Also, it is important to note that every time we make a retrofitting not only the
strength is changing; also the individual behavior of each structural element might
be affected due to this retrofitting.
Plan view of the Architecture (After retrofitting)
Note : Another important aspect in this type of project (not less important) is the
subject of architecture. For this reason all of the shear walls have been located in
the way that it is possible to consider a good arrangement of the doors and windows.

Construction year: 1950 Area: 28,000 x 12,000 mm2 Steel strength : 279.5 N/mm2
* So far, What else is needed? …
•In order to be sure, it was made a non-linear analysis to compare some results…
It was used Stera 3D (Saito, T. ; BRI-Japan) as a tool for analysis…
•From the results: The coefficient of horizontal acceleration (for shear base force) is
about 0.3 of "g"

CONCLUSIONS
•How to fix a proper value to get the Demand Index in Peruvian case?
•How to adapt the Japanese Standard Method to be applied in masonry
structures?
