 Definición
El virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana es un retrovirus que predominantemente infecta
linfocitos que tienen la proteína de superficie CD4, además de correceptores que pertenecen a
la familia del receptor de las quimiocinas (CCR5 o CXCR4), y produce el síndrome de
inmunodeficiencia adquirida.

VIH tipo 1
● E.E.U.U. y el resto del mundo
VIH tipo 2
● Es endémico en regiones de África.
● Progresión más lenta hasta desarrollar SIDA y por la resistencia a los inhibidores no
nucleosídicos de la transcriptasa inversa
 Epidemiología
El VIH de tipo 1 es frecuente a nivel mundial.
Más de 34 millones de personas en todo el mundo viven con infección por VIH o
SIDA
Se estima que en E.E.U.U. hay 1,3 millones de personas infectadas por el VIH, y
la quinta parte de ellas no es consciente de su infección.
Los hombres homosexuales siguen siendo la población más afectada por este
virus
De todas las nuevas infecciones por VIH en 2009, el 61 % de los casos eran
hombres homosexuales.
