Durante todo el siglo XIX, Gran Bretaña


ejerció la hegemonía en la economía
peruana, sin embargo eso no posibilitó
un desarrollo significativo de las
inversiones directas norteamericanos en el
Perú.
La primera guerra mundial (1914 – 1919)
puso también fin a una excepcional
coyuntura que permitió el desarrollo de la
economía de exportación peruana y el
fortalecimiento del tráfico peruano-
norteamericano.

En esos años el algodón, el cobre , el azúcar y en grado


creciente el petróleo  constituyeron las principales
mercancías exportadas desde el Perú.
