 The terrible rumble of an earthquake destroyed the silence of the morning of
April 18 at 5:15 AM, lasted only a minute, but caused the worst natural disaster
in the history of the nation. An analysis of modern measures 8.25 on the Richter
scale, in comparison, with another earthquake that was also made in San
Francisco on October 17, 1989 and record 6.7.

 The greatest destruction came from the fires that the
earthquake caused. This swept the city for three days
and managed to destroy 490 blocks of the city, with a
total of 25,000 buildings, made more than 250,000
people homeless and killed between 500 and 700.
Damage exceeded estimates 350 million dollars.
Other cities in the San Francisco Bay, Santa Rosa and
San José were also affected.

Throughout the city, fires started, heaters that had been left on, chimneys,
stoves, electric sparks or the ignition of gas escaping broken pipes. A
housewife lit a match in what had been her kitchen and caused an
explosion that burned hundreds of houses that were destroyed to the
ground.

 Huge cracks in the streets had fractured all the water pipes. Except in the

hell.

 By noon of that first day, the fire was totally out of control. Federal troops
called by the only telegraph line that remained intact were on the road, as
well as units of the National Guard and 600 lifeguards of the University of

After the earthquake and the fires, more than 500 blocks from the city of San
Francisco were in ruins. More than half of the city's population was left
homeless. People lived in tents and other shelters, and they cooked
outdoors. However, despite the devastation, it did not take long for people
to start collecting debris.

 The earthquake occurred when there was a sudden movement along the
San Andreas fault that goes from Oregon to the north to the Mojave desert in
southeastern California. It is between the plate of North America and the
Pacific plate: there the two plates try to slide one on top of the other; The
longer they clog up each other, the stronger the earthquake will be.

El terremoto ocurrió cuando hubo un

The city soon rebuilt itself, in the same place, on top of
the San Andrés fault. To ward off the danger, a new
system was used in construction, based on cement
and steel. The vehicles pulled by animals were
banished and the tram and the car were introduced,
disappearing the stables where the straw that served
as food for the horses was stored.

La ciudad no tardó en reconstruirse, en el mismo

sitio, encima de la falla de San Andrés. Para conjurar
el peligro, se empleó un nuevo sistema en la
construcción, a base de cemento y acero. Se
desterraron los vehículos tirados por animales y se
introdujeron el tranvía y el automóvil,
desapareciendo las cuadras donde se almacenaba
la paja que servía de alimento a las caballerías.
