The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori

XXVI Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church
Shalompeacemaking defined by the Prophet Isaiah and reiterated by Jesus in Lukes gospel is a ministry priority for Katharine Jefferts Schori, elected Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in June 2006. She serves as chief pastor and primate to the Episcopal Churchs members in 16 countries and 110 dioceses. She joins with other principal bishops of the 38-member Provinces of the worldwide Anglican Communion, seeking a common cause for global good and reconciliation. Over the course of her nine year term, Bishop Jefferts Schori is responsible for initiating and developing policy for the Episcopal Church and speaks on behalf of the church regarding the policies, strategies, and programs authorized by General Convention. She has been vocal about the Episcopal Churchs mission priorities, including the United Nation Millennium Development Goals, issues of domestic poverty, climate change and care for the earth, as well as the ongoing need to contextualize the gospel. The Presiding Bishop is charged to speak Gods word to the church and to the world. Bishop Jefferts Schoris career as an oceanographer preceded her studies for the priesthood, to which she was ordained in 1994. She holds a B.S. in biology from Stanford University, an M.S. and Ph.D. in oceanography from Oregon State University, an M.Div. from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific, and several honorary doctoral degrees. She remains an active, instrument-rated pilota skill she applied when traveling between the congregations of the Diocese of Nevada, where she was elected bishop in 2000 and ordained to the episcopate February 24, 2001. At the time of her election as bishop of Nevada, she was a priest, university lecturer, and hospice chaplain in Oregon. Bishop Jefferts Schori grew up in the Seattle area and has spent most of her life in the West. Bishop Jefferts Schori and her husband, Richard Miles Schori, a retired mathematician (topologist), were married in 1979. They have one daughter, who is a captain (pilot) in the U.S. Air Force.

The Directory of the 77th General Convention

Canon Bonnie Anderson, D.D.

32nd President of the House of Deputies
Bonnie Anderson, President of the Episcopal Churchs House of Deputies, is an advocate for the ministry of the laity. In the tradition of the great lay educator Verna Dozier, who called the laity the sleeping giant, Anderson often reminds the church that there are 2 million ministers in the Episcopal Church and many are still waiting to use their gifts actively to help bring about the Kingdom of God. Lets get going. Anderson is known in the Church as a champion for the ministry of the laity, an advocate for marginalized people, a preacher who speaks to the people in the pew, and a skilled community organizer. She is presides over the 800+ members of the House of Deputies as a fairminded, skilled parliamentarian, grounded in love for Christ Jesus. Her advocacy for the environment and the people most directly affected by environmental degradation earned her a gubernatorial appointment in her home state to the Michigan Environmental Review Board. To improve the quality of a badly polluted river, she mobilized 400 volunteers from more than 40 counties for a yearly clean up and continued water quality monitoring. Prior to her election as President of the House of Deputies in 2006 and re-election in 2009, Anderson served as Vice President of the House of Deputies; chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Program, Budget and Finance; an Executive Council member; and an Executive Council elected representative to the Episcopal Church Investment Committee. In her home Diocese of Michigan, she has held many positions, including Canon to the Ordinary, president of the Standing Committee, and chair of Constitution and Canons. Anderson is an author of articles, writer and preacher of sermons and homilies, an adjunct lecturer at the University of Michigan, and a person who takes her baptism seriously. She has been awarded honorary Doctor of Divinity degrees from the Episcopal Divinity School and the University of the South, Sewanee, and honorary Doctor of Canon Law degrees from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary and General Theological Seminary.

Welcome to Indianapolis TheRev.CanonDr. GregoryS.Straub

Executive Officer & Secretary of the General Convention
The 77th General Convention should be both a challenging legislative meeting and a celebration of the Churchs mission and ministries. Because the budget passed by the 76th General Convention did not appropriate the funds necessary to have convention in the same way as before, there will be some differences of which convention-goers will need to be aware. First, and most obviously, this will be an eight-day, rather than a ten-day convention. My first General Convention as deputy in 1985 was also an eight-day convention, so this is not exactly new. However, for the first time since the convention began worshiping together outside the legislative houses and the meeting of the Episcopal Church Women (1991), the daily convention Eucharist will not be in the Convention Center. Instead, we shall gather in the ballroom of the J.W. Marriott Hotel. The move was made to save money, as the Church pays for Convention Center space, but hotel meeting space in our contracted hotels is free (because we book large blocks of sleeping rooms). And, for the first time, the Triennial Meeting of the Episcopal Church Women will not be in the Convention Center. To save money that gathering, too, has been moved to a ballroom at the Westin Hotel. The Board of the Episcopal Church Women has been most gracious in accepting this significant change, and the local worship committee has worked to use our new space in creative ways. As I write (the beginning of June), there are considerably fewer resolutions to come before our legislative houses this convention than last. There are, so far, few B and D resolutions, fewer A resolutions than last time, and, while there are many C resolutions, they address a limited number of topics, reducing the number of them that will come before the houses. Having fewer resolutions should enable longer and more substantial debate than is sometimes possible. This past triennium it has been my honor to chair the Joint Standing Committee on Planning & Arrangements, which is charged with working on upcoming conventions, proposing a draft schedule and working with the host diocese to provide a gracious welcome. No diocese has worked harder than the Diocese of Indianapolis to ensure warm hospitality and festive cheer. Bishop Catherine Waynick and her local committee members have been stars, efficient, energetic and responsive. Thank you, Diocese of Indianapolis! As always, I am appreciative of the work of the General Convention Office, my staff, each member of which wears a General Convention hat in addition to his or her myriad other duties between conventions. Due to staff cutbacks after the last convention, they have had to work harder than ever, and I am grateful to them. I am Faithfully yours,

Gregory Straub Executive Officer & Secretary of the General Convention

Worship at General Convention

Worship and Eucharistic Ministers / Servicios y Ministerio de Eucarista
Worship and prayer are central to the life of faith, and to the life of the General Convention. Please join us for a daily celebration of the Holy Eucharist in the ballroom of the J.W. Marriott hotel. Everyone is invited to assist with the administration of Holy Communion; more than 100 Eucharistic Ministers are needed at each daily service and for the festival UTO Ingathering and Eucharist on Sunday, July 8. The worship staff will be recruiting volunteer Eucharistic Ministers in the 45 minutes prior to worship services, so arriving early is a plus; volunteer Eucharistic Ministers will be assigned to a specific communion station. Eucharistic Ministers should plan to sit near their assigned communion stations and and report there during the Peace for instructions from the Communion Station Host. Eucharistic Ministers do not vest and are asked not to wear any buttons, clothing, or objects that may distract communicants or could be interpreted as indicating a position on any matter before the General Convention. For the Festival Eucharist on Sunday, July 8, there will be advance sign-ups for Eucharistic Ministers available in the Registration Area (in Exhibit Halls B & C) on the Wednesday or Thursday before. All Eucharistic Ministers must arrive on Sunday at least 45 minutes prior to the service, or a replacement will be recruited.

Welcome to the 47th ECW Triennial Ms. Marcia Himes

President of the National Episcopal Church Women
Welcome to the 47th Triennial Meeting of the Episcopal Church Women!! The National Board has worked very hard to plan this event for you. Our hopes for all of you, whether you are a delegate, alternate or visitor, are that you go home inspired, full of new ideas, and with joy for the new paths ahead on your journey. Our themeMany Paths, One Journeywill be spread out among the many events, speakers, and workshops taking place here in Indianapolis. From our keynote speakers, the Rev. Lindsay Hardin Freeman and the Rev. David Gortner, to our workshop presenters, we will learn about our faith journey. The Triennial Meeting chaplain, the Rev. Debora Jennings, will give us food for the journey daily; and our musician, Adam Graham, will lead us in some great traveling music. Two new things that should not be missed are the combined UTO/ECW gala dinner, Many Paths of Thankfulness, and the first ever 5K run/walk, Run a New Path. The information for both of these has been in the delegate mailings, but our secretariat also has the information here in Indianapolis. Some additional items added to our other events are: the Distinguished Women recognition, the Share Fair, our Social Justice presentation, and the Excellence in Communication awards. All of these will be a chance to see and hear about the wonderful things being done by Episcopal Church Women all over the country. A very important item is the Many Paths Conversation at 8:00 am, on Monday, July 9. I know it is early, but we will be taking a look at the future of ECW. The Episcopal Church is changing, we all know it, and the Board wanted to take a proactive approach in talking about our journey together. Mary MacGregor will be our pilot for the discussion. So again, I say Welcome. Please find a board member if you have a question, or concern. Have a blessed time on this part of your journey!! Peace,

Marcia Himes, President
