• Weak vowels ə, ɪ, ʊ, (often) unstressed syllables
<present> = (adj/noun) /'pre.zənt/ (/prezn̩t/)
<present> = (verb): /prɪ.'zent/
• Strong vowels (and ɪ, ʊ) occur in stressed syllables

• The process whereby a strong vowel of a stressed syllable is replaced by

another phoneme in the weak-vowel system /ə/, /ɪ/ or /ʊ/, or by a syllabic
consonant when the syllable becomes unstressed is called vowel reduction.
• This is one of the most characteristic features of English.
• This is one conflict area for foreign learners of English.
