The spectacled bear is a species of mammal of the Ursidae family.2Of medium size
compared to other bears, it measures between 1.30 and 1.90 m tall, and weighs on average
between 80 and 125 kg, the male being larger than the female. Its coloration is uniform, black or
blackish brown, with coarse hair. The snout is short, light brown or white, with whitish spots that
extend around the eyes and nose through the cheeks, down the neck to the chest, and varies greatly
between individuals.
It lives almost exclusively in the humid Andean forests with annual rainfall of over 1000 mm
(perhumid zones), although it is also found in paramos and semi-arid areas where rainfall is around
250 mm.
Due to this diet, the spectacled bear is the most herbivorous ursid, after the giant
panda. In its search for food it descends to desert and dry forest areas, where it feeds on cactus,
sapote, and pasallo trunks.
Andean bears are solitary and mostly diurnal. In wooded areas they establish trails
that allow rapid movement between distant areas, as well as intraspecific communication through
marking by means of scratches and scent (pheromones).
