A. Números cardinales

1st First
2nd Second

about the VEHICLE SUSPENSION SYSTEM. Ask your professor help when you need assistance.
The suspension of a vehicle is actually part of the chassis, which comprises all of the important
systems located beneath the car's body. These systems include:
1. THE FRAME: structural, load-carrying component that supports the car's engine and body,
which are in turn supported by the suspension.
2. THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM: setup that supports weight, absorbs and dampens shock and
helps maintain tire contact.
3. THE STEERING SYSTEM: mechanism that enables the driver to guide and direct the vehicle.
4. THE TIRES AND WHEELS: components that make vehicle motion possible by way of grip
and/or friction with the road.

There really are only two basic categories of steering system today; those that have PITMAN ARMS
WITH A STEERING 'BOX' and those that don't. Newer cars and unibody light-duty trucks typically
all use some derivative of rack and pinion steering. Pitman arm mechanisms have a steering 'box'
where the shaft from the steering wheel comes in and a lever arm comes out - the pitman arm.
This pitman arm is linked to the track rod or centre link, which is supported by idler arms. The tie
rods connect to the track rod.

Read carefully and translate, using your English-Spanish dictionary, the following
paraphrases about the VEHICLE FUEL ENGINE AND AUXILIARY SYSTEMS. Ask your
professor help when you need assistance.
Most engines in motor vehicles today are four-stroke, spark-ignition internal combustion engines.
This is called a FOUR-STROKE COMBUSTION CYCLE and converts gasoline into motion.
The four-stroke approach is also known as the “Otto cycle”, in honor of Nikolaus Otto, who invented
it in 1867. The four strokes are: Intake Stroke, compression stroke, combustion stroke and exhaust

The two main parts needing oil are the PISTONS (so they can slide easily in their cylinders) and any
BEARINGS that allow things like the CRANKSHAFT and CAMSHFTS to rotate freely.
In most cars, oil is sucked out of the oil pan by the OIL PUMP, run through the OIL FILTER to
remove any grit, and then squirted under high pressure onto bearings and the cylinder walls.
The oil then trickles down into the sump, where it is collected again and the cycle repeats.
The COOLIMG SYSTEM in most cars consists of the RADIATOR and WATER PUMP. Water pump
circulates COOLANT the engine, throughout passages around the cylinders and then travels through
the radiator to cool it off. While some engines are AIR-COOLED, the vast majority of engines are
LIQUID COOLED.
The EXHAUST SYSTEM includes the EXHAUST PIPE and the MUFFLER. Without a muffler, what
you would hear is the sound of thousands of small explosions coming out your tailpipe. A muffler
dampens the sound. The exhaust system also includes a catalytic converter.

RESUMEN
The best place to learn about the automotive maintenance tools and equipment you will need in your
workshop is a Tool Catalog. There are basic hand tools such as screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers and
ratchets; air and electric power tools such grills, grinders, sanders and saws; hydraulic car lifting
equipment such as car lifters, scissor and bottle jacks; diagnostic and measurement equipment and
instruments such as callipers, micrometers, testers and scanners; and an endless list more.
The typical brake system consists of disk brakes in front and either disk or drum breaks in the rear
connected by a system of tubes and hoses that link the brake at each wheel to the master cylinder.
Other systems that are connected with the brake system include the parking brake, power brake
booster and the anti-lock system (ABS)
The suspension of a vehicle is actually part o the chassis, which comprises all of the important systems
located beneath the car's body. These systems include: the frame, the suspension system, the steering
system, the tires and the wheels.
Suspension system is the system of springs, shocks absorber and linkages, that connects a vehicle to
its wheels. Suspension systems serve a dual purpose: contributing to the car's handling and braking for
good active safety and driving pleasure, and keeping vehicle occupants comfortable and reasonably
well isolated from road noise, bumps, and vibrations. The fundamental components of any suspension
system are: springs, torsion bars, dampers, and anti-sway bars.
The steering system is made up of the same three or four components: the steering wheel, which
connects to the steering system, which connects to the track rod, which connects to the tie rods,
which connect to the steering arms. Most of the steering systems essentially move the track rod
left-to-right across the car. The tie rods connect to the ends of the track rod with ball and socket
joints, and then to the ends of the steering arms, also with ball and socket joints. The two most
common types of car steering systems work are rack-and-pinion and recirculating-ball steering.
Automobile transmission system consists of various devices that, helps in transmitting power from the
engine through the driveshaft to the live axle of an automobile. Gears, brakes, clutch, fluid drive and
other devices work together for transforming the speed ratio between the engine and wheels of a
vehicle. The transmission system of the vehicle incorporates various components, which are attached
to the back of the engine, and used for distributing the power from the engine to the drive wheels.
Transmission system is generally of two types: Automatic and manual transmission.
Most engines in motor vehicles today are four-stroke, spark-ignition internal combustion engines.
This is called a four-stroke combustion cycle and converts gasoline into motion. The four strokes
are: Intake, compression, power and exhaust. The engine fuel system pumps gas from the gas tank
and mixes it with air so that the proper air/fuel mixture can flow into the cylinders. Fuel is delivered
in three common ways: Carburetion, port fuel injection and direct fuel injection.
There are several engine types which are identified by the number of cylinders and the way the
cylinders are laid out. Motor vehicles will have from 3 to 12 cylinders which are arranged in the
engine block in several configurations. In-line engines have their cylinders arranged in a row. 3, 4, 5
and 6 cylinder engines commonly use this arrangement. The "V" arrangement uses two banks of
cylinders side-by-side and is commonly used in V-6, V-8, V-10 and V-12 configurations. There are
several auxiliary engine-supporting systems, the most important are: the fuel system, the
lubrication system, the cooling system and the exhaust system.
In the Diesel engine, the fuel is not mixed with the air entering the cylinder during the intake
stroke. Air alone is compressed during the compression stroke. The Diesel fuel oil is injected or
sprayed into the cylinder at the end of the compression stroke.
There are different kinds of automobile electrical systems, depending on the function that each one
has. The main systems are: The charging system, the ignition system and other electrical circuits
such as the lighting and signals circuits, gauges, power windows and seats, and windshield wipers.
The modern charging system consists of the alternator, the regulator (which is usually mounted
inside the alternator) and the interconnecting wiring. Its purpose is to maintain the charge in the
vehicle's battery and provide the main source of electrical energy while the engine is running. If the
charging system stopped working, the battery's charge would soon be depleted, leaving the car
with a dead battery if the battery is weak and the alternator is not working, the engine may not
have enough electrical current to fire the spark plugs, so the engine will stop running.
The purpose of the ignition system is to create a spark that will ignite the fuel-air mixture in the
cylinder of an engine. The ignition system sends an extremely high voltage to the spark plug in each
cylinder when the piston is at the top of its compression stroke. The voltage that is available to the
spark plug is somewhere between 20,000 and 50,000 volts or better. The job of the ignition
system is to produce that high voltage from a 12 volt source and get it to each cylinder in a specific
order, at exactly the right time.
